Another Trump Victory, I'm sure some will say in the comments.

US sells about 16 million cars a year. China 31 million yet TESLA is losing in the Chinese EV market with over 100 competing companies.
Panasonic won’t be able to compete with Chinese battery makers. The one stop shop is in China.

" The Osaka-based conglomerate is a major battery supplier for Elon Musk's U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla, and also operates in the housing, energy and auto sectors. "
Time to boycott them for having anything to do with that slime ball

adding Tesla in there was a nice angle JT. Mission accomplished. Hey, at least the readers get to feel good about some more negative news connected with the musk man. 10 thousand people losing their jobs is just secondary. Click.

Hopefully they'll keep young productive salaryman, many Japanese company keep people near retirement age with high salary just for doing nothing everyday as long they show in the office.

Any personal experience within some Japanese corporation to back this assertion ?
From my personal experience, that is not people near retirement age, but only the one who past the retirement age are kept one or two more years as advisors, having a lower workload
out of date image of a Japanese company

It's not mentioned in the article of course, but Tesla is now mining and processing its own lithium at scale in order to produce more and more batteries in-house. The only global EV maker to do so.
Tesla in doing so greatly reduces cost of batteries, over 30% and eliminate supply chain risks and bottlenecks, so Panasonic a big loser. Tesla's can also better customize their batteries and create more efficient recycling etc.
In other words, Panasonic is losing serious battery business and likely other EV makers will follow in its footsteps, doing more of their own battery production.
In Tesla's case, they also have a giant rapidly growing standalone energy storage business using batteries, so the lithium mining and processing inhouse makes all the more sense, Elon Musk calls it a money printing machine

EV sales are actually UP. Of all EV brands, only Tesla is experiencing a slowdown in demand.

On the contrary, us non-MAGA people don’t rejoice and take pleasure in the misfortune of others.

Good luck to the folks being laid off. The story says 5000 are in Japan.
Its also a big come down for Panasonic to now be a company foreign media describe as "a battery supplier for Tesla" as if that is the string on the Panasonic bow.

Panasonic has a more advanced automotive battery tech than any Chinese company has. And for home solar back up the state of the art are German Sonnen ecoLynx lithium iron phosphate batteries and control units.
Desert Tortoise
Simply not true. Panasonic manufactures batteries for Tesla in the US. In China CATL manufactures batteries for Tesla. JG Chem is another battery manufacturer that supplies Tesla. Tesla integrates their batteries into the battery packs used in Tesla automobiles but they do not manufacture them. Tesla teams with local mining companies to source the lithium and other materials needed for their batteries.

And a lot of us in the market for home battery back up are going to give Powerwall 3 a pass and buy the Sonnen ecoLynx system. I am ready to pull the trigger on it now.

Panasonic has faced financial challenges since the late 2000s, with its consumer electronics division being particularly affected. In 2012, the company reported substantial losses, notably in its television business. In response, Panasonic initiated a series of restructuring measures, including asset sales—such as its stake in Tesla—and workforce reductions."

only the delusional, China is by far the biiest car maker and EV maker in the world , they supply over 70% of the batteries for EV, no country comes close when it comes to manufacturing to scale. theres a reason BYD is the biggest selling EV worldwide

"Panasonic targets 10,000 job cuts worldwide"
As a result of rigid management slow in innovation reactive only to market forces which means too late no gain.
Sven Asai
My impression is that they are a mass market and average or below electronics maker. They just should increase quality of their consumer electronics products which then will bring more success in the other fields where they are stronger and have already reputation like in battery and electric power management and such. And of course this news of firing 10,000 people isn't good for a more positive public image. Such bad things more silently and an increased general product quality would have had a more substantial business success. Too late...

Curious how many Panasonic products you have owned or own now? Their home electronics have always been highly reliable and durable for us. Their solar battery tech is among the best on the market. We have always had great service from their radios and vacuum cleaners too. Never had a bad product from Panasonic. I can't say that about most other manufacturers of home electronics.

Tesla's massively increasing its OWN lithium processing in order to save $, reduce supply chain risks, better customize batteries with precise lithium requirements, improve re-cycling AND avoid tariffs on imported batteries
Above, not good for battery makers, including Panasonic and of course the industry will follow Tesla, just like they did with the Gigga-press and process lithium in-house.
One reason Tesla not focused on car sales, there battery storage business much more profitable and they've been lithium constrained, but that's changing FAST!

Will say in Panasonic's defense, they make GREAT Dishwashers, very quiet, and get the job done, so if you hate doing dishes, strongly recommend!

One of the BEST General Coverage ShortWave Receivers ever made (in its day) is /was the
Panasonic RF-4900. Full band coverage from the AM Broadcast Band all the way up to 30MHz, all mode with excellent receiver sensitivity and image rejection. It also received the AM Aircraft Band and FM Broadcast Band. NOBODY made anything LIKE IT. It took up the whole top of the desk.
What a shame, sorry guys, but they’ve been out of the Shortwave Market for decades anyway. 73

A $1.5 trillion USD lithium deposit was just discovered in the state of Oregon. US EV battery production is secured for generations.
Peter Neil
Until the people who live in Oregon see the environmental damage from lithium mining and battery manufacturing. Panasonic built plants in Mexico because of the pollution. NIMBY people will be climbing the walls.
It took time to develop the energy density of lithium batteries. Other types using zinc ion, zinc air and aluminum or magnesium ion next generation types are being worked on now.
Lithium batteries won’t be around for generations.
