Seems like Nippon steel wanted "in" at any price. They will find in the future that that price was likely much too high, and in no way worth the end cost.

I wonder what the executives thought was in it for Nippon in the deal where US gets Japanese money to prop up a faltering industry in the US in the short term, and one that if it cant compete evenly with other players in this industry around the world it will simply return to its current situation in 5 or 10 years time.

The Japanese government has Nippon Steel's financial back on this. Think of it as protection money to the Trump Family Mafia.

Well, throw a lifeline to the dying US steel industry.

Congratulation to both companies, glad to see they were both able to reach an agreement and move both corp. forward.

All good until Trump changes his mind ...again.

"Nippon, U.S. Steel say they have completed partnership deal."

Excellent! Now get back to work.

How many trump merch, like his new phone, did they buy to get this "deal"?

Great deal for all parties concerned, as US Steel gets massive new investment in latest generation of steel, lots of new JOBS and thus far more US based steel production, enhancing US national security.

For Nippon Steel, huge financial win, ZERO US tariffs, lower Corp. tax rate, immediate CAPEX expensing, lower energy costs, no need for costly Trans-Pacific Shipping, etc.

Big Win for DJ Trump too, reshoring and reindustrializing the US = huge part of his MAGA platform

Biden having stopped the deal ensured that Trump would eventually push it through. Is there anything that Biden/Obama did that he hasn't reversed?

Anyway, this is good for US Steel, Nippon Steel, the U.S. and Japan. Took longer than it should have but it got done. Now we US Taxpayers won't have to be bailing US Steel out.

The deal does not say Nippon Steel can not buy back the Government golden share shares. There will be tariff applied to imported ores if they decide to supply structural steel for columns, beams shipbuilding and stainless steel production. They can get long with the low quality mines that come with the deal to supply the Auto industries but that about it. I assume Nippon steel will still achieve offshoring because all indicators show the USD is in decline and countries are shying away from their bond market .So soon or latter a Government will selloff of their holding in USSleet to repay their world debt. and keep the USD from decline.

Eh, I think once Nippon Steel gets rid of the slugs who were running USS into the ground and puts competent management in place they will be in a good place.

What a big mistake by Nippon Steel to pay such huge sums for this acquisition. The way this unfolded, Nippon Steel seemed like they were being bullied by the Americans to give into many points that benefited US steel more. Although this is an acquisition by Nippon steel, they seem like a weaker party in this deal because any and all decisions they make can be ‘ Veto ‘ by the US Government through the golden share. Nippon steel won’t be able to take any independent decision making or control yet threw away 14.9 billion dollars in this deal.
