"We have a golden share, which I control, or a president controls. Now I'm a little concerned whoever the president might be, but that gives you total control," Trump said at a White House event.

How can Nippon Steel say 'no' to such an amazing business deal ...

Why would Nippon Steel agree to this deal, considering what Trump has done to every business he's ever owned? I mean, even a CASINO failed under him!

14 ( +16 / -2 )

As I said before, this deal stinks, but Nippon Steel didn't want to eat the huge penalty from walking away, and why should they, so after a short period of time, they will find a buyer in the US to take over and they won't lose face, or money!

1 ( +6 / -5 )

By definition a single share, whether gold or brown, is still a single share. Did they really just bamboozle him with nonsense?

7 ( +10 / -3 )

The real story here is that USS is such a steaming pile of junk that in the end the US had to relent and sell it to a foreign company. Nobody else wants to deal with it and it would otherwise crash.

Despite the bold talk, they realize they are lucky to have any options at all.

He wants decisions of grandeur.

Freudian slip. He was thinking about golden shower.

Win for all parties, US gets more steel production capacity, jobs, investment, including Nippon Steel know how and Nippon Steel gets great tax treatment on their investment with immediate CAPEX expensing, 15% Corp. Tax rate, lower energy costs and no more transpacific shipping, plus ZERO Tariffs!

Given obvious National Security, US has to remain in control, as without 'hard' power, ability to build things, the US will not remain a superpower and thus the Govt. has veto power of all 'board' related matters.

Trump is making America Build Again!

-13 ( +2 / -15 )

Remember, Nippon Steel could have decided to go it alone and build a US steel plant to avoid tariffs, as the South Korean steelmakers busy taking this approach.

They opted to partner with US Steel in order to expedite and thus avoid steel tariffs far faster and will not have to hire and manage US based employees etc. Given that Nippon Steel is contributing majority of capital, seems likely they'll receive most of the 'output' to avoid tariffs.

Controlled by president! The US Steel seems no longer a private company. It sounds like government's property. Someday all companies would be controlled by US President in near future. As a result, not much different from China.

Whether shares or showers or whatever, with Trump they always have to be golden. He's incurable.

This is the term China uses for companies they control from behind the scenes too. Which is to say communism. So Trump is a communist now?

10 ( +10 / -0 )

Government control of the means of production? Sounds an awful lot like that terrible communism to me. I'll be expecting the "small government", "free market" types to speak up in 3, 2, 1...

6 ( +6 / -0 )

It turns out national security matters, as outsourcing is too slow, expensive and RISKY. This includes steel, why Trump policies are busy re-industrializing the US.

As Elon Musk says, great companies must manufacture, because hardware is increasingly vital to tech. innovation!

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Important to keep in mind Nippon Steel really had no choice, because Trump surely told them, that as steel (Aluminum, Auto, Pharma, Chips, etc.) production increases in US, he'll ONLY further increase US tariff rates

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Trump is not a communist. He loves controlling everything he wants, just like "Do it as I say" He wants to change present rules maybe laws and to make his own rules for great America. He believes his own way makes America great again.

Ah. So, fascism then.

Trump tries to push through nonsensical actions to reframe as accomplish later when a national or international controversy is taking place a distraction.

The national guard once evey found out he is in the Epstein files which would also explain Epstein's death while Trump was in office and Trump's attempt to various national actions while Israel attack.

He is taking advantage of the news cycle!

How can Nippon Steel be so stupid to get into this kind of deal?

How can Nippon Steel be so stupid to get into this kind of deal?

They didn't. Trump is just full of crap, as usual.

If you pay attention during his speeches and press conferences, you will notice he has a "tell" when lying. During his next speech, look closely at his face. If you see his lips move, he's lying.

Nippon Steel could have chosen to go it alone, setting up fully owned US based production like many other foreign steel companies now doing. They partnered with US Steel because it was best business decision to do so

Google "golden share". It's much more than a single share.

People here know more about golden showers than golden shares, it seems. Telling.

They went with trying to completely buy US Steel so they wouldn't have to have the extra cost of building factories and purchasing land. Cry baby Trump blocked it just because it's a company baby boomers bend over backwards trying to act like it's some sanctified company.

WASHINGTON

The United States has a "golden share" in United States Steel Corp, President Donald Trump said Thursday, adding it will be controlled by him after Nippon Steel Corp's massive investment in the iconic American producer.

.

Another trump bankruptcy in the making.

.

Nippon Steel should get ready to mark their investment as a tax right off.

This way, you'll never surpass the Chinese steel industry, which produces 13 times more steel than US..

The US doesn't need to produce cheap ships with slave labor like China.

Doubt this deal will go the way Nippon steel hopes. Over pay for access to the US market in terms of a partnership but not right out control. Keep in mind there's a n active investigation into Nippon Steel over dumping in the US.

Trump on Friday cleared the way for Japan-based Nippon Steel to potentially acquire U.S. Steel, though details about the structure of the deal — including a possible "golden share" held by the federal government — remain unclear.

Trump again talking out his rear end.
