Putting him in restraints for five days without giving him his necessary medicine for diabetes is basically murder.
Hello Kitty 321
It would be interesting to know what exactly he did.

It doesn't matter, they can do that because system let them do that. Can detain anyone for 23 days, after that even can be re-arrested if they want.

However immigration can get away with death of their detainees

I have very few fears surrounding living in Japan.
My biggest fear, though, is getting mixed up with the Japanese police or being accused of something I didn't do.
Futaro Gamagori
@David Brent
I agree and that's a universal thing i believe. Not just in Japan.

No. Especially in Japan. Do you not know how “justice” works in Japan?
Matt
I'd like to know more about 'the man'. Was he Japanese?

No point having a trial, here is what the result will be:
Judge: While the court finds that there was negligence, the suspects cannot be found guilty of negligence resulting in death. The court finds the defendants not guilty. However, the court recognizes the suffering of the victim's family and will ask the prefecture to pay ¥10,000 in compensation."

Yes, police, prosecutors and jailers generally seem to have a special protected status.

Note the timeline.
death late last year,
The man was arrested on Nov 25 last year
died in a police cell on Dec 4
The prefectural police searched the Okazaki police station in December and have been questioning officers based there.
And finally,
are expected to be referred to prosecutors
Nothing to see here, Move on!!

Police brutality is very common in Japan. They can get away with anything. Laws are just too ancient.

Is being assaulted by police in Japan acceptable?
Being in restraints for 130 hours whilst ill?
Deprived of medicine?
It seems that there are more than a few criminals within the police forces themselves in Japan…

Tough battle.

He was Japanese and he had schizophrenia. From reading the Tokai-TV original Japanese article, the police also submerged his head down a traditional style toilet.
It sounds like they couldn’t handle someone with such a condition. Very sad end.
Futaro Gamagori
Now that we confirmed the guy was Japanese, it's all good then yeah?
BertieWooster
There is something VERY wrong with the police/"justice" system in this country.
Aoi Azuuri
including same Aichi prefecture's Nagoya immigration bureau, Japan's authorities have many hotbeds of human rights violation.
uaintseeme
Are these cops in jail? The story failed to mention it or maybe I'm just blind. If not, they should be. If any of us were caught on camera kicking anybody, we'd be in jail.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Hopefully these police officers are detained and interrogated in the same manner this man was and then locked up for the rest of their days.
gkamburoff
It s not just the system, it is the incomplete people running it, those with no humanity.
They are all over.
Aly Rustom
Doesn't surprise me
Cops here are no different than the criminals.
BertieWooster
I wonder why three people gave me minus points for saying that there is something very wrong with the police/justice system here. Perhaps they have no direct experience. You can be arrested, detained, placed in solitary with no recourse to a lawyer or communication with your family and whether you need medical assistance or not depends on the whim of the police officers.
dan
Aichi police- never before you seen a more villainous hive of scum and corruption.
owzer
Or at least Aichi police.
BertieWooster
Aichi must be bad, but I hear horror stories about Osaka police and the Yakuza connection.
