Police in Kitahiroshima City, Hokkaido, have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act by driving at a speed of 175 km/hour along a road with a 60 km/hour limit.
Police said Kenya Sawada, a part-time employee, has admitted to the allegation and quoted him as saying he was in a hurry to return home to Sapporo, Sankei Shimbun reported.
Police said Sawada went over the speed limit while driving along National Route 274 at around 9:50 p.m. on Aug 6. The speeding violation was detected by a mobile speed camera called an “Orbis."

To jail driver clown..

going at such a speed on an active highway is just asking for an accident, even if you're a professional driver. I wish he explained the reason for his rush. It's probably not worth risking one's life over it unless you're being pursued or something
Speed
I'm not exactly sure what the stretch of the highway was like where he got caught speeding, but I've been on long stretches of road in rural Hokkaido that were straight and almost deserted where going really fast is really tempting to do.
But, yeah, this guy shouldn't have been going that fast.

You see these fools around Tokyo area almost every week, speeding, changing lanes, doing all kinds of crazy juggling on the road ("combini warp", etc.) just to save 2, 3 minutes for absolutely nothing as by their looks they're not a company president, a pilot rushing to Narita or anything like that, only low IQ people with very little going on in their lives believe they need to be "faster" than others around.

Is the standard of driving in Japan deteriorating?
Saw three accidents on Tuesday which is a record for me…

Don't you know? When you gotta go you gotta go. The reason he was rushing home was. . .

I want his part-time job if I am able to buy a car that can do 175km/h ^o~

I have driven a few times over this speed a few times on deserted highways unknowly with no traffic. I have a Mercedes Benz sports car and it feels the same at the speed limit or much above it. I have learnt to set my speed on highways to speed limit and not let my heavy foot get carried away. It can be dangerous.

There are roads in Hokkaido that are long and straight without any junctions that still have the same 60kph speed limit. This isn't as bad as it seems.

c'mon man, I gotta get home and take a squat!

175km/ph is fast, but its not that fast considering most cars (other than Kei cars) go 180+km. Its stil dangerous, but I'm actually surprised this made the news. Cars are driving that speed on the Kanto Express Way routinely. I see all kinds of Ferrari's, Porsche's, Lambos and BMWs flying past me all the time. This guy is on some straight rural road with no one around at night. Its not like he was street racing. I mean, give him a hefty fine sure, but probably every guy I grew up with tested out their max speed on some rural road in the middle of nowhere. Most rural roads are going to have low speed limit, but are just as safe as the Express Way when no one is looking. Japanese car makers really should restrict cars from going over the speed limit if they have such a problem with this guy going 175km.

Everybody in rural Hokkaido mostly ignores highway speed limit signs. I’ve driven on 274 more than a few times. Virtually no one drives 60kph outside populated areas.
That said, the 274 is not a terribly wide road either, especially in most of the rural sections. People going 80? Normal. People going 100? Not uncommon. 175? Insane.
And, for goodness sake, know ahead of time where the Orbis cameras are set up! Every local normally slows down for that 1-km section.

I guess reading and comprehension is not your strong point.

175+KPH is ~110MPH! That is quite simply wayyyy too fast on a non-expressway roadway.
I go over the posted speed limit all the time. But, 120 on the expressway is one thing. 175 on a regular road is just nuts and quite dangerous.

German autobahn have several areas without any speed limits. There and only there that guy can do such a thing, but not on autobahn parts with speed limits and of course not here in Japan and not on normal 60kph roads. Oh wait, there is even a secret possibility in Japan I heard about, but that requires an elite automobilists' club membership and costs a minimum of 250manYen and is not on publicly accessible road courses. There, and if meeting the requirements, one can give own sports and luxury cars some normal work to do, because that everyday ultra low speed in city traffic or on speed limited highways is of course a torture for the car, its motor and probably for the richer owners too.
