Man arrested for hugging woman after she gets into her car

Police in Fukuoka have arrested a 59-year-old man on suspicion of indecent assault after he hugged and groped a woman in her 20s after she got into her car.

According to police, the incident occurred at a coin car parking lot at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Police said Shinji Kawai, a self-employed man from Chuo Ward, grabbed the car door and opened it after a woman who was returning from shopping had sat in the driver’s seat. He reached in and hugged and groped her.

A nearby couple heard the woman scream, and the man subdued Kawai, while his wife called the police. The woman was not injured.

Police said Kawai has admitted to the allegation and quoted him as saying, “I saw her walking ahead of me and I just got turned on.”

Hugging isn't a big deal but groping is. Why doesn't the headline say groping rather than hugging?

Too many afternoon martinis, Officer! I was DRUNK!

So, once again - fellows, if you can't control the urge, and going home and taking matters in hand won't suffice, just head for the nearest red light district. It's that simple.

I suppose "I just got turned on" is one step better than "I don't remember".

Do you think you're talking to a British, German, Dane?

The perp is japanese, it's not that simple.

Remember we have women-only trains because this is impossible for them.

I suppose "I just got turned on" is one step better than "I don't remember".

Groping is still assault, and he intentionally opened the car door to do this. Sounds like he had more motive here.

Police said Kawai has admitted to the allegation and quoted him as saying, “I saw her walking ahead of me and I just got turned on.”

That's no excuse. No excuse for the abuse.

Well, a narrow silver lining is that at least the criminal is not making excuses and instead made it very easy for the prosecution to put him in prison for the crime.

'Hugging' is one thing but this is assault and battery.

Like many men, seeing an attractive woman makes you wanna come up to her and squeeeeze in a bear hug, ahhhhhhh.......

But you have to be considerate and mature with it. 59 years old, for crying out loud.

What an excuse.

Speak for yourself starpunk. I’m pretty sure most right-minded men don’t think like that.

Seems to be a lot of older men who really like much younger women in Japan.

People are beginning their comments by saying that hugging isn't a big deal.

You're condoning assault.

Women have the right to move through the world without a random stranger touching their body, in any way, shape, or form.

Why is that so hard for you to understand?

The headline is misleading. He was arrested for "groping", not hugging.

nearly rich; what's the delta between a Brit, Deutschland, Danmark perp v Japn deliberately perp opening a car door to inflict a groping offense? I admire the women's only cars approach, but in rush hour a rush to board factually still leads to offenses by all males around the world

One man sexually assaults a woman, and he gets arrested and reported in the news while hundreds (if not thousands) of women every day are sexually assaulted on public transport and other areas throughout Japan and get away with it every day.

Japan's hidden sexual assault epidemic that the media and authorities choose to ignore every day is shameful.

Well for starters (I know you know this), Japan has one of the worst gender equality levels in the world (ranked 146).

You think the protection of women from sexual assault is a high priority for the overwhelming majority of ojisan leadership?

whether it's hugging or groping, or both at the same time, it is definitely SEXUAL VIOLENCE against a random young lady

i saw her walking ahead of me and i was so full of anger and hatred that i violently assaulted the woman

corrected the confession for you!!

I read it as the women getting into his car of her own accord . Lost in translation?

I saw a drunk salaryman do basically just that on a street in Fukushima years ago. I gave him a big "Oi !!!" and started marching toward him like I meant business, and he scampered away.

Makes me wonder, though... In this story a man physically subdued him until police arrived. Had a gaijin been the subduer, would the story read the same, or would the gaijin have been in trouble for assault and/or holding someone against their will?
