Police in Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture, have arrested a 50-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of stealing a bag of rice and other items from a residential property.
Police said Sanichi Suzuki has denied the allegation and quoted him as saying, “I have no idea about it all,” Sankei Shimbun reported.
According to police, Suzuki is accused of breaking into a man’s property between 6 p.m. on May 16 and 7:45 a.m. on May 17, and stealing about 5 kg of rice from a cold room.
The bag of rice had a security tag inside it. The owner reported the rice missing and police tracked its location from the security tag equipped with a satellite positioning system (GPS).
The 78-year-old owner had put the security tag inside his rice bags after having suffered similar thefts last year.

Hahaha good job!
Wasabi
and the security tag cost more than the 5kg of rice

Not sure what point you're trying to make as he still has both the rice and the security tag.

Smart man!

The man said that he had rice stolen before so he is probably a farmer and so the rice will be in 30kg bags (that are still cheaper than a security tag).

It was a smart move from the owner but I failed at humour today :)

The man who stole the rice should just ask Farm Minister Taku Eto to give him some. According to Mr. Eto, he never has to pay for rice.

As stated clearly in the article:
*"According to police, Suzuki is accused of breaking into a man’s property between 6 p.m. on May 16 and 7:45 a.m. on May 17, and stealing about 5 kg of rice from a cold room."*

Other news sources say it was an Apple AirTag, ¥1,800. On sale, sometimes ¥1,500.
What’s most interesting about this case is that the thief apparently didn’t have a smartphone.
As an anti-stalker measure, all smartphones will display a notification if an unregistered tracking device is moving with you.
The settings can’t be changed on iPhones, and can only be changed on some androids.

I always upvote bad jokes. There are so many humorless twits in here just going around downvoting everything good, bad, and ugly, so I figure I can help cancel them out.

yet they do nothing about stolen phones or other items equipped with airtags despite knowing the location of the items

*The 78-year-old owner had put the security tag inside his rice bags after having suffered similar thefts last year. Police said Sanichi Suzuki has denied the allegation and quoted him as saying, “I have no idea about it all,”. *Perhaps he turned all the rice into Saki that he has stolen over the year and and now he has no idea!!

It’s an economic law - make things expensive and people will steal them
Harry_Gatto
Yes: if you want to give something away put it outside your door with a sign saying it's free and it will stay there for days. Change the sign to $50 and someone will steal it the first night.

"Perhaps he turned all the rice into Saki [sic] that he has stolen..."*
What is 'Saki'?

Next time bring a GPS jammer

Sake, not saki.

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time, don't do it...even if you're VERY hungry!
