Police in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested two 19-year-old men on suspicion of fatally assaulting a man in his 50s on a street in August.
According to police, the two suspects, who were arrested on Wednesday, were acting as touts for a local bar near JR Kawasaki Station at around 2:50 a.m. on August 24, Sankei Shimbun reported. The victim, who had been eating and drinking at a nearby bar, approached the touts and started arguing with them.
Police quoted witnesses as saying the two suspects started punching and kicking the man, causing him to fall to the ground.
The man hit his head when he fell, and after returning home to his home in Tokyo, his family noticed something was wrong and called 119. He was taken to hospital, but died on September 5. Police said the cause of death was traumatic brain dysfunction.

He was a lot older, this is why you keep yourself in shape these thugs want an easy target you see.
Anyway this does in no way negate the demonic wickedness of these two young men, bullies and thugs, nuff said.

Send them both to prison for a long, long time. That will give them both lots of time to think about their idiotic mistake. However, 19 is still to young to charge them as adults, isn't it? They can only be held until they're 21 and then they'll be released without any records of having taken a man's life. Strange, isn't it?

Nope. In Japan 18 is the age of criminal responsibility. These two violent street thugs will be tried as adults - and hopefully receive at least 15-20 years inside. Their criminal records will follow them around for life - rightly so.
RIP to the poor man.

Sounds to me like a drunken middle aged man was looking for trouble and found more than he bargained for.

Gallows for those juvenile clowns..

Death penalty is waiting.

No. Not based on the information in the article. This was a drunk streetfight, not murder. No need for the kneejerk reaction.

Probably not in this case and not in Japan. I think the death penalty here is for 2 or more people killed and in a more serious situation with premeditation. Not to disrespect the 50+ year old, but he was just a drunk guy in the early morning hours. Maybe 15 years I would give these 2 thugs, at least.
Fighto!
Nope - some murderers are executed for single-victim murders in Japan. 25 have swung for single victim killings in the past 3 decades.
The ages of these scum and lack of planning of the killing will likely save them from the rope. Some would say unfortunately.

You death penalty guys just don’t understand how and when it is applied.
So tiresome to continually read here.
You would think being such advocates of it, you would actually understand its application but evidently not.

I would also ask the question, do you want to live in a country where you could be sentenced to death for someone dying as a result of a street fight you are involved in?

What is a “tout” I’ve never once heard this term in English anywhere other than blasting in Kabukicho. Is this even a word in English? My Japanese friends didn’t know it either so it’s not Japanese.

It is a dictionary term, look it up!

Moot point. 99.9% of us never get involved in "street fights", let alone kill someone.
Zaphod

Even at 0.1% it is still a valid point. Note also that they did not "kill" him, he went home and died the next day from after effects of bumping his head.

@aptly named Fighto!
I’ve never been in a fight in my life and don’t intend to start now.
However, for argument’s sake; say someone attacks me, I defend myself by fighting back and he goes down and hits his head and later dies.
I’m then in the frame for murder and the death penalty.
I don’t want to live in a country like that
Maybe Tokyoliving and Seigi do.

self-defence all day long. no case to answer...
and it's manslaughter if you didn't mean to kill someone but they died as a result of your actions.
Stewart Gale
In any case, this story is clearly not an example of a crime that will be punished by the death penalty.
I’m puzzled at least two posters here think it is.

Not really convinced you should give up the day job and take up a legal career.
That defense is not going to stack up in Japan.

I can return that advice. With death penalty as the answer most everything, your legal advice should be pretty simple.
Curious George
This is so unfortunate. In my mind, a drunk older guy got into the faces of two teenagers. Maybe he was upset that they were young and on the street harassing people. Maybe they tried to get him into their bar and he got angry. Or, maybe he just went looking for a fight. And someone said above, he got more than he bargained for. I don't think the teenagers tried to kill him. I think they were putting him in his place. The old dude was just unlucky when he fell and hit his head. I was in Osaka yesterday and thought I was gonna have to brawl when the taxi driver in front of us went into a fit of road rage and got into the face of our driver. So, I can see how this could happen.
