U.S. Marine arrested for drunk driving in Okinawa

Police in Okinawa City, Okinawa Prefecture, on Sunday arrested a 22-year-old U.S. Marine corporal on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Police said the suspect, who is assigned to the U.S. military's Futenma Air Base in Ginowan, has refused to speak since his arrest, Kyodo News reported.

According to police, an officer on patrol spotted a light car driving erratically and stopped it. The suspect was given a breathalyzer test which showed his alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

However, harassing US servicemen because you hope they had a beer so you can arrest them is not a good use of taxpayer yen.

No, but stopping and arresting drivers over twice the legal limit is.

That's not a big news. He would pay lots of fine to get out.

How 'bout the press also adding that Okinawa has the highest drunk driving percentage in all of Japan. Almost four times the national average. Idiots are idiots, uniform or not.

In Japan, driving under the influence of alcohol is a very serious offense. This just may end his military career! He will definitely leave Japan after his punishment, that can include fines, license suspension, and/or imprisonment. The specific consequences vary depending on blood alcohol concentration (BAC),

Luckily he didn’t kill anyone this time and get a slap on the wrist like the last guy.

strangely, many Americans are making excuses for a US Marine stationed in Okinawa who was arrested for DUI and apparently is not cooperating with the police.

To be fair JT reports when Japanese are arrested abroad when it happens. I remember the story of the Japanese airline pilot who was arrested in Hawaii for public urination. He might have been drunk too.

He was driving erratically and found to have above the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, there is nothing wrong with the arrest as described. Pretending he should have been left alone until causing an accident is deeply irrational.

Link Please.

For example :

In 2022, authorities in Japan reported a new record low of approximately 2.17 thousand accidents involving drunk driving

Thank you!

After getting all the punishments in Japan for his crime, this drunken idiot will be deported but will face no charges in the USA.......so back to normal for him.

You think they do it for every Japanese abroad? Not a chance. Every U.S. service member in Japan? Big chance.

Nope. He will also be punished by the Marine Corps and has probably ended his career. Your comment displays your lack of knowledge of military discipline and punishment. Not that it matters.

Idiot. Been there and done that myself. If it was a one-off, that is, he is not a habitual drinker or drunkard, then I hope that whatever they punish him with, they will eventually cut him some slack at that young age.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

If he was driving erratically, it was likely due to him playing with his phone. Twice the legal limit in Japan equals about a beer and a half.

And some of the excuses start. Lock him up for a long time, DUI is no joke doesn't matter your background.
