It's unworkable. Trump has not thought this one out. Who pays the tariffs? Per film or reel? Streaming media?

There are more important things in the world than the price of a movie from a different country. In fact that is so stupid that's how you end up with people in the states having a lot less options and leads to more illegal movie sites which then turns to hackers swiping more information since people in the states are being encouraged to use shady websites to watch Squid Games or something
fxgai
Not sure what it means.
James Bond movies are shot all over the place. So...
Carry on.
fxgai
Interesting that so many countries are subsidizing this activity.
I have not heard of the Japanese government subsidizing local movie making though. One positive thought to start the day!

Yeah Trump's goal is to devastate Hollywood, not the opposite.
Peter Neil
Maybe if foreigners are in the movie there should be a tax collected at theaters and by an app on your TV? Hey! We can use AI…
Ken
Is this MAGA doing their little word salad thing? None of this makes any relatable sense
Peter Neil
I must be out of the MAGA loop.
I can't remember ever reading anything or seeing anyone in Hollywood saying that they're being "devastated" by foreign movies.
Can someone from the MAGA bunker post a link?
Bob Fosse
The White House are already walking this back and claiming no decisions have been made.

This is funny considering he's spent decades slamming Hollywood

Trump’s love for tariffs knows no bounds.

We thought the Americans had elected Homer Simpson. Turns out they elected Grampa Simpson.
"He is known for his long, rambling, often incoherent and irrelevant stories and senility." [Wikipedia]

The MAGA bunker people are hunkered down waiting until someone gives them the approved talking points about when Hollywood became enraged about foreign movies. Hollywood doesn’t make movies anymore because of foreigners!
It has to be crafted to blame the “libs” and Biden. Or maybe Obama?
owzer
my first reaction to the title was “And how is this going to work??”
I wish Trump was everything his supporters imagine him to be.

China has long influenced American movie makers. The faster America quits bowing down to China the better off it, and the rest of us, will be.

Fine, not a bad idea.
This is a great loss of knowledges through watching films as an education. For the next generation America's young people they will be stupid and naive.Trump believes everyone should live like being his ego of looting money is a career in their entire lifetime. The world has nothing to lose!
elephant200
Trump hates Hollywood because they are pro-democrats and Hollywood stars openly expressed their resentment over Donald Trump. This is part of his political campaign to ruin Hollywood and who suffers from his crazy idea? The next generation America's young people.
Trump shall never raise tariffs from America's porn movie industry, right? Yes he needs those female porn stars, even at the age of 79 !
OssanAmerica
Another Trump brain fart. Pointless, useless and unnecessary justified by erroneous information and belief. Just another playground for him to wreck.
The US Fiim industry is not dying, and is not under threat from foreign films, in fact it dominates the market. And because it earns more from the International Market the last thing they'd want are reciprocal tariffs by other countries.
The country is being run by a man with a mental disorder. When are the people going to wake up to this fact?
lincolnman
DEI, LBGTQ, immigration, now this....all sucker-bait for his supporters...
Keep them angry and distracted while you fleece them of their Social Security and Medicare to give your ultra-rich buddies a huge tax break...
They'll be ranting about DEI and trans bathrooms as they sit outside their foreclosed homes, bankrupt...
Peter Neil
This is minor. NBC cut part of his interview because it would show him to be completely out of his mind. People can look it up.

It's another grift to get a "reward" from the Hollywood magnates. He won't get an Oscar for his B-grade 100 days of ham acting shooting his mouth off and wielding his Sharpie, but he's certainly in the running to pick up his 3rd impeachment.
Tokyo Guy
If this fails as a distraction, he can add some specifics:
150% on movies in a foreign language
200% if the lead character is played by an actor who is anything but white and aryan-looking and does anything but save the world from the socialist commie pinkos.
300% if the movie has subversive political overtones
500% if the soundtrack is written by anyone other than Kid Rock or Ted Nugent
750% if the script threatens to provoke people to think
1000% if Trump isn't allowed to redo the movie with complete creative control.

The Second Trumpian Reich is looking closer to Hitler’s Third Reich … We the People of the United States of America deserve better.

If US wants to be competitive with the rest of the world, people need to see what their intellect is about . . . . movies are an important means of intellectual expression . . . .
Bob Fosse
“Trump accused other countries of “stealing the movie-making capabilities” of the U.S.”
I think he should introduce a 300% tax increase on all Americans working abroad. They are a security risk and are being stolen by other countries. Bring American workers back home. If they are real patriots they’ll support it.

Let's stop free trade in an industry in which we are completely dominant. What next? Tariffs on P-funk? Baseball? Hamburger-based fast food?
sunfunbun
Americans elected him.
Trump is a symptom, the problem is 'We the people of the USA'.

Where will Trump find his Leni Riefenstahl for a MAGA "Triumph of the Will" Redux in time for his birthday bash?
HopeSpringsEternal
Big shots in Hollywood, who now more often than not work with Amazon and Netflix, very happy about Trump's efforts to make sure the movie business is a level global playing field with equal market access abroad!
Trump's protecting ALL US Business Interests, one reason he picked up 10+ points in CA in Nov vs. 2020 election!

Filmmakers and Hollywood financiers are baffled, to say the least, by President Trump's announcement that he wants a 100% tariff on movies. Trump called for a 100% tariff on foreign films, a day after Jon Voight proposed 'limited' tariffs.

Are they now. Which ones? What did they say? Got any quotes?

But you don't know which big shots, or what they said?

A lot of movie production has moved overseas for the same reason most manufacturing has moved overseas. The cost of production is 10-20x in the US and it takes significantly more time and money due to dealing with unions and stifling labor laws.
If you want movie production to come back to the US, you need to dissolve unions and lower wages. I don’t think Americans are going to do that though.
In the end, like all trump tariffs, the American people will pay the price.

He has not "thought ANYTHING out" as far as I'm concerned. Simply tariff (tax) this group, that industry, those countries, heck.. all countries including our closest friends and put them all in the same basket as our "adversaries". Let's not forget his truly well thought out decisions to cut and tear down the American universities, leaders in research and sciences of all disciplines. I'm not going to mention DOGE because obviously, that one was truly well thought out..wow, so well executed and professionaly managed. Other countries should take note how it should be done. Fire people in all departments, even if they are in the middle of vital work, perhaps even in the middle of cancer research and cures, and just like that...fire them the day of showing up for work and let all their work go to waste. The taxpayers will save so much money..wow!!! Oh, if more people die of cancer, well...we have to be patient. Our great President has a MANDATE to do all this, all in the name of Making America Great Again..but for who exactly, is my question? Putting a tariff on the movie industry..hmm, I think at the same time He should also mandate the film industry not only to make films in Hollywood but also to mandate contents to make sure the material is always highlighting the correct patriotic values of the current administration. America first, screw everyone else. Seems to be the current administrations theme. The film industry will have an absolute field day making movies about this mess...one day.

Destroying America as quickly as possible. Fiction authors would be soundly criticized for making up this sort of thing.

This was propose by Trump crazy John Vouhht
Yrral
Insane in the membrane the movie
HopeSpringsEternal
It's another smart move by Trump. Why?
Because countries are offering movie makers massive incentives, like tax credits, and subsidies to produce movies abroad, It's a real economic competitive issue.
Perfect example of Unfair trading practices with subsidies provided by countries seeking to increase economic activity and soft power via movie influence etc.
Level playing field is a must, not non-tariff trade barriers now being pursued by especially India and China etc.
Trump = Common Sense!
HopeSpringsEternal
Movie theater business dying anyway, as streaming takes more and more share, but movie production is another matter, that's Trump's addressing, these so called hidden 'non-tariff' trade barriers, market access etc
HopeSpringsEternal
It's another clear example of the outsourcing globalists hollowing out US production, only this time it's movies, not manufacturing. Trump has the STRONG support of the workers in the movie industry, not the elites!
Pukey2
Do what they usually do anycase - make Hollywood remakes. The average American cannot sit through 5 minutes of watching a movie in a non-English language.
TokyoLiving
Now he wants to control the movies, then he will control books, radio and TV...

Perhaps next up Trump puts a tariff on every post on his "truth social" platform. That will show them foreigners who's boss!

Stupid, as usual. Three of our kids are in stunts in LA. And yes, the work is not what it was prior to the pandemic. But this is not the solution. What Trump doesn't take into account is the number of foreign films shot in their own countries that are increasingly being shown internationally. Add that is a lot of movies are shot due to the location, not solely due to incentives (Canada is a big exception). What SHOULD be done is have the US Government provide incentives to film in the US instead of giving huge tax breaks the the Trumps rich buddies. It's the same as California has had to do to compete with other states like Georgia, New Mexico and Texas.
If it really is "America First" vs "Rich America first", the US Government should be helping the US industries. But we know that isn't the case. It's only to provide the illusion of helping by signing EOs that the uninformed automatically agree to because Trump said so. It also wouldn't surprise me if Trump wants to limit the diversity of international films coming into the US, so he wants to make it more expensive for them to be shown. So typical.

What if an American Company wants to make a movie about ancient Egypt? Where do they make the movie, Las Vegas?
bass4funk
Well, exactly.
The movie industry has enough money to help itself.
He will be doing less of those going forward.
Again, it’s not about limiting access, it’s to bring back the industry more to the U.S., I understand you can’t film everything in one country, but you can film a lot in the U.S. we have deserts, mountains, various climate zones, California taxes makes it almost impossible to film anything anymore.
starpunk
Yes. trump is a lippy chump. He's too narrow minded and stupid to realize that the biggest problem is that Hollywood has totally run out of ideas. And let's face it, so many films are cheaper to make overseas because it's more cost effective and the US dollar value is so much better overseas in many cases. Cost effective and cheaper to produce. After all, many scenes from STAR WARS were filmed in Tunisia.
trump is so egotistical and dumb. Isn't he supposed to have a college degree in business or economic science or something in that wavelength? Oh yeah, six failed businesses. Excuse me.............

If Hollywood wants to make a movie about landing on the moon, it must be in a LA carpark.
