McDonald’s Japan’s new Cheese Cheese Double Cheeseburger makes a different ingredient stand out

In recent years, the Double Cheeseburger at McDonald’s has been winning fans in Japan, who fondly refer to the burger as the “Dabuchi." With twice as much cheese as a regular cheeseburger, there’s a lot to love about the Dabuchi, but now the chain is doubling down on the flavors, with a new limited-time version called the Cheese Cheese Dabuchi.

Interestingly, you won’t find the new burger advertised outside branches of the chain, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for it on the menu.

Priced at 540 yen on its own, or as part of a set for 870 yen, the burger doesn’t come with any special packaging to announce its cheesy presence.

▼…but from the side, you can see there’s cheese, cheese and double cheese.

The slices were gooey and melty in the middle and soft to the touch on the outer edges, promising to deliver mouthfuls of flavor. So now it was time to find out…how cheesy is a Cheese Cheese Dabuchi?

▼ The answer to that is: Very cheesy.

Any notion that two extra slices of cheese won’t do much to change the flavor dissipate upon first bite. The white cheddar mellows out the saltiness of the regular cheddar cheese in such a way that the double combo makes it extremely cheesy, and incredibly tasty.

One surprising effect of eating so much cheese is that it serves to highlight the other flavors, with the sourness of the pickles coming to the fore, making them seem even more fresh and delicious.

For such a small and simple burger, the Cheese Cheese Dabuchi is big on taste. It’s only on the menu for a limited time, though, until May 28, so you’ll want to get in quick to get a taste of it.

I can make a better Smash burger with real Monterey cheese and Colby Jack that melts. I just need to see where I can buy the buns!!!

I just need to see where I can buy the buns!!!

Hamburger buns are sold in many supa here. They even have them with sesame seeds. You can also use English muffins or bagels, which I personally prefer to buns.

I have yet to find brioche buns like the type they use in the gourmet burger joints, though. I'd love to know where they get them.

The difference between the burger in the signage and the real one reminds me of that scene in Falling Down where Michael Douglas's character expresses his disapproval.

Had a good Whattaburger the other day. Light on ketchup, grill the onions.

Ok, I will try and look again, Fukuoka stores usually don't carry these.

That does sound fantastic, I will be the first one in line if they do start to sell them

You could easily bake your brioche buns.

I'll have to try one. As a kid, I always ate the 2 Cheeseburger Meal at McDonalds. Then, I discovered the Whopper and only ate those at BK.

One surprising effect of eating so much [processed] cheese is that it serves to highlight the other flavor…

Another is obesity, high blood pressure, and reduced life expectancy.

Yummy.

I'll stick to the big mac on my rare visits to McD.

Fondly called the Dabuchi? Maybe the writer doesn't know what the term means. Doesn't look the least bit appetizing. Whopper or Baconator, please.

Yes yes yes: you can make a better one yourself. But there are times I don't feel like cooking. There are times when I want to get out of the house and have a meal somewhere. To me, this is worth a try. Quarter pounders and other McDonalds offerings aren't exactly health food. In fact, McDonalds never claimed it was a health food. Yet its popularity in Japan shows that the people like to go there. Eat healthily and the occasional trip to McDonalds won't kill you dead. This looks pretty good to me and I'd love to try it.
