The richests men in the world are literally taking medicines away from the poorest people in the world, leaving workers that have dedicated decades of their lives to protect and help people in dire need, and all for a transparent excuse that nobody believes. Pretending UNAIDS cuts will do anything instead of what actually represents the biggest chunk of spending (the military) makes no sense. Except of course when you consider that UNAIDS worked against Apartheid in South Africa against interest that Musk defends, or that it was investigating how Starlink was used in the Ukraine's war, once you see whose interests were being affected by UNAIDS it makes perfect sense that it is being destroyed.

Hmm, where have I heard that number before?

Those who are against Trump's pulling out of the global funding programs will focus on the good these programs do, while those who support his decision will focus on all the waste and corruption. I'm sure there must be a healthy balance that can be achieved, where they can spend there where the benefits are clear.
BTW, I wonder if the 6 million number is intentional...
virusrex
Except that there is no such waste and corruption, at least not compared with the much more important one that comes with the real budget bleeding.
The programs being cancelled supported American producers, employed tens of thousands of Americans overseas, bought relevance, good will and influence for the US, and allowed outbreaks to expand and affect American interests. But since the programs also affected interests of powerful people then they were destroyed illegally to push for those interests to profit much more.
Ah and also to facilitate ethnic cleansing in Gaza, which is a nice bonus for the current US government.

Right now a lot of people that would have serious problems with the destruction of USAID became silent precisely because this benefits the plans Israel have about depopulating Palestine as much (and as soon) as possible.
The number is only one of the many tragic consequences of the destruction, considering other consequences (outbreaks, lack of preventive medicine, etc.) the number is much higher.

always a disclaimer after a false absolute statement.
iknowall
There is massive fraud, waste and abuse with USAID, which is why the US president has paused global funding.
Kind of makes sense--the leader of the biggest contributor looking into the transparency of the organization.
wallace
People in need of the USAID will suffer from canceling it.
iknowall
Not if other countries pick up the slack.
Why doesn't the UK take over the funding?
virusrex
Since you failed to argue how this is false there is no need of a disclaimer.
Again, compared with the quantity of money lost on the actually important parts of the budget (like the military) there is simply no comparison, even if the full budget of USAID was wasted (obviously it is not) it would still not represent more than 1% of the budget, military spending on the other hand...
The convicted felon Trump has no legal right to stop USAID, nor it would refute the fact that the US lost a lot of things it gained by USAID, nor that the main people being affected are the poorest ones.
Which again is a loss for the US, decades of work to oppose the gain of influence and power of countries like China and Russia have been already lost, either "picking up the slack" means more and more power the US wasted by this measure.

On 45's watch a record number of Americans died because of the "Bleacher's" incompetent management of the pandemic and now it's the turn of millions of "the world's people" to die because of 47's heartlessness in choosing to wage genocidal warfare on the poor while promoting welfare for the rich.

That’s what MAGA and the Right Wing Christian group want. The amount of hatred in both MAGA and mainstream media stream christianity is shocking in this day and age.

Everybody screams when the American tax money is pulled, but no other country volunteers to take money from their citizens to replace it. Common on "outraged" Japanese, British, German, French, ... citizens, speak up. Volunteer a deduction from your paycheck. That's where this money originates. And how about some rich middle Eastern oil countries. Lets see who antes up.
That money is coming from ordinary US citizens, just like me. There is no magic money fountain here from which it flows from and into the 70 Countries mentioned above. We average taxpayers are paying those 5000 Ethiopian health workers mentioned. We said in the last election we are not willing to do it anymore.

Because most already give billions of their tax dollars in overseas aid, you want smaller economies to take on the burden of the worlds largest economy on top of what they already donate? Ridiculous.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_development_aid_sovereign_state_donors
The US is biggest single donor, and pulling that funding will have adverse effects but for the record the following was 2019 figures
USA 55.27 Billion
China 38 Billion
Germany 35.02 Billion
India 33 Billion
France 19.5 Billion
Japan 17.47 Billion
Russia 1.14 Billion
wallace
The US was the biggest USAID or foreign aid but the UK donates more per capita. per capita, Germany is the largest donor.
wallace
Most American expats living in Japan do not pay US federal taxes.

It's easy to take the moral high ground when spending someone else's money.

Right, so China and India, with a 100 fold more citizens pays less than the US. Thanks for making my point for me.
As for claiming the US should pay more because we have "the worlds largest economy", we also have almost 30 Trillion dollars in debt. Today's USAID expenditures will still be being carried on the backs of my great grandchildren.

BTW, let's not forget, we've known how HIV is spread for almost 30 years. We also know there are simple measures a person can take to prevent contracting HIV acquired through sexual activity. As for infection by blood transfusions, also easily preventable.
What steps are the governments of highly affected populations taking and why have they been so unsuccessful? This article only seeks to make the US look bad for possibly suspending funding. No mention of the failures by affected populations to curb infection rates.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Since there is effectively a cure in the form of remission, focusing on infection rates exclusively is asinine.

The Gravy Train ran its last run

People already (after 30+ years) know of the dangers of unprotected sex.Even Ethiopians can afford radios, right?
TaiwanIsNotChina
People not dying from AIDS is a gravy train? Interesting thinking.

Stegling is not a medical doctor, and does not have a Ph.d in any health-related discipline. These numbers are inflated.
This is a good time for transparency in the UN AIDS.
virusrex
That would be because it do makes the US look bad, the disease spreads easily and even the best measures can only have a limited effect, not to count that they are expensive and difficult to implement. Suspending funding for excuses is not making the US look any good, in fact it makes it lose decades worth of influence.
She is not trying to directly treat patients, but instead to direct and coordinate efforts in public health, for that her masters degree is perfectly adequate.
Citation needed, nameless people on the internet making claims without any evidence are not an argument.
No it is not, illegaly eliminating the US agency means there is no transparency since there is no agency, of course this is the whole purpose, to eliminate a very strong tool against autocratic government's influence.
iknowall
Stegling is not a medical doctor, and does not have a Ph.d in any health-related discipline.
She can't treat patients; neither can you.
"illegally eliminating".
Court citation needed. Which jurisdiction was the trial held?
virusrex
She is not trying to treat patients, that is just a false claim you made.
How would you know? are you still making baseless claims about other posters to get your comments moderated? You know it is against the rules of the site to make false claims about other people commenting here, yet you routinely do when you run out of arguments.

The point is they have many more mouths to feed with much less money than the US, so how exactly does that make your point?
Living beyond your means is nothing new, just about every nations owes money.
No it wont, the money spent is money earned and does not really come from credit. Credit goes to high end things like Defense spending, NASA, research. What it doesnt go towards is universal health care for all Americans. Yet other nations make funding that a priority and still give aid.
USAID represents 0.22 percent of income. Australia also donates 0.22 percent of income as aid, and maintains one of the best universal health care systems in the world. Its all about choices. Giving the rich constant tax breaks means its the ordinary people who pay for everything while the rich continue to live in luxury. Have Trump fix that!
TaiwanIsNotChina
It's Congressionally approved. What gives King Trump the right to tell Congress where its money is going?

Like the 50 mio USD for condoms for Hamas, or the 10 mio USD in DEI grants for colleges to study transgender lab mice? Please tell us who suffers if that stops.
In the event, it seems you do not even realize that "USAID" has nothing to with "aid". The abbreviation stands for "International Development" and as we now find out it was an uncontrolled slush fund for all sorts of insane projects. The article is in fact about US donations and not about the USAID as you seem to believe.
Zaphod
Peter14
USAID does not stand for "US AID" as you too seem to mistakenly believe. The danger of not reading further than legacy media headlines...

I know Serbians are capable of understanding there is more than one Gaza in the world, but I guess not this Serb.
