It is interesting and educational to grow 'farm crop' grains - rice, wheat, oats. The amount of effort required to process your crop is a useful reminder of why we rely on them being grown by farmers. Growing dryland rice may put you on the cutting edge of horticulture, as more rice may need to be grown this way soon.

In some countries you may struggle with biosecurity rules to find seed of Duborskian. Consider Oryza sativa "Black Madras". An ornamental rice that is considered 'safe for consumption in moderation'. But as always when growing something to eat, buy seed from a reliable source and research anything you have not eaten before, especially if it needs to be processed in any way before consumption.
