The winner can’t unify America in any positive way. America is a culturally balkanized state experiencing the pitfalls of late-stage imperialism.
The only “unity” that might be found is if the elected president is so awful that 70 or 80 percent of the country want the person gone. Recent partisanship, however, such as rabid defenses of Joe Biden’s health despite obvious signs of dementia, suggest that even this is unlikely. Trump has made Democrats and the Cheneys into unlikely bedfellows, but a handful of elites switching allegiance hasn’t moved the needle in the general population. People will rally behind “their” candidate no matter what the person does. Even shared hatred is unlikely to overcome this partisanship and tribalism.
I wonder if it really is "millions". Trump's true hardcore base isn't actually that big, they just make a disproportionate amount of noise.
Of the people do genuinely don't like Harris, we can probably boil it down to her being a democrat, a woman, and not white, usually some combination of those.
The United States of America is no longer "united". It's politically divided and on the verge of violence and civil war. It wasn't always like that. Hatred has become the norm. The once-great nation is on its knees.
Because the red, although he may not have created the division, he surely make the division wide and deep as he could.
It didn’t start there, in 2009, the President elect had every opportunity to try and bring the nation together as a historic figure, but he chose to go after conservatives in a vile way, and from that point there was no turning back. But as far as bringing the country together, neither side will be able to do that. We have gone into tribalism and that’s the new order, that won’t change anytime soon, not to mention we are worlds apart on policies, so that will not change for the foreseeable future.

We're not dead yet. When the active duty military appears on the streets, then I will agree we have had our Rubicon moment. Even then, the dictatorship phase of the Roman Empire lasted hundreds of years.

What did the evil Obama do? Did he make the other side look like uncultured swine through personal example?
They will just have to suck it up (like Trump did with his microphone the other day). The Dems will have only themselves to blame for picking such a terrible candidate.
They country may be on course for the most pointless civil war in history. Half of the nation has lost any sense of, well, sense. It will be a case study in mass-idiocy for years to come.
Oscar Wilde was probably right when he said, 'America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between.'
"Over the next few days, millions of Americans will learn that someone they loathe will be president of the U.S. How can the winner unify the country?"

Obama was the worst and weakest when it came to foreign policy, he would never define or call the terrorists what they were, never called them out, mocked Christians, failed to oversee the crime of Treyvon Martin, failed to deal with the serious social and economical problems within the Black communities, so the man wasn't evil, his policies socially, economically particulary to small businesses were a massive disaster.

The EC elects the president no the popular vote.
The title doesn't say anything about the popular vote.
Think of it this way too. What unites human beings is ultimately love. It's hardly in abundance in the US but those on one side are so cut off from it that they likely deride its role in human affairs.

He is thoroughly enamoured with himself. He absolutely adores himself. You can tell by the way he speaks with those pregnant pauses for everyone to drink in his suave debonair statesman air. Drink me up, people...adore me as much as I adore myself. I'll parade as the champion of the working class while I bomb wedding parties in the Middle East and bail out Wall St. all the while stirring up divide among the races. But honour me with thou praise while you worship at the alter of my greatness.

Trump, OTOH, yes. Widely despised and rightly so.

He or she cannot unify the country. It's never truly been unified; semblances of unity existed more strongly in the past.

I find the question to be incorrect.... this question only would apply only if the winner is blue.

The nation seems to be getting two widely different "facts" from different "news" media.
This is the real problem. And no, to answer the question. It will only get worse after the election, possibly much worse.

Why should the winner ever do that? Move to North Korea, if you prefer such a 'unified' country.

nobody can unite USA and its people.
main problem is deeply divided society without any common goals...

Tomorrow fifty percent of Americans are going to wake up in a parallel universe. If only Japanese elections could be this dramatic.

The popular vote when counted does not elect the president.

I don't believe either candidate can unify the country. But one of them certainly doesn't want to.
