My council often do monthly maintenance on the system for build up and blockages. And it blow the lid open and a mass with. So lid down plus a brick on top of the lid.
Closed, flush projects droplets. first came upon the science measured advice in early 2003. again in 2020. inn typhoon= Big Wind lid down and basins plugged. wind velocity over the SVP pipe, mmh think benoulli's law, or why do planes fly?
Toilet seat and cover down because when you flush, droplets get ejected out from the toilet bowl. You don't want to be brushing your teeth with a toothbrush containing urine and faecal matter now, do you?

Always closed.
"Feminists" that complain about toilet seats being up. I thought you can do anything, except putting toilet seats down ?
Also men. If you pee standing up, you're spraying urine all over the walls and floor, get a black light if you don't believe me.

Down because we want the lid down when we flush, which sprays droplets.

Always down with the lid closed, a habit I acquired during the early 70s' living in rural Japan and having to use a ボットン便所

We close the lid before flushing. No sense in having bacteria flying all over the place and breathing it in when you flush.

To clarify wind gusts draw the grey water up the SVP, gust pass grey water drops, is the sewer or your connection first port of call?

A no brainer - down. For the obvious sanitary reasons.
Last year had relatives from Australia stay and the young man of the group in late 20s always left the lid up.
I said to him my wife doesn't like it - please put it down.
But out of habit I guess he still left it up.
Finally I explained it like this -
Do you leave cupboard doors open when you get a plate? No!
Do you leave the fridge door open when you get a drink? No!!
Do you leave the micro-wave oven door down when finished? No!
Do you leave the front door open when you come home? No!
Do you leave the closet door open when you get a shirt? No!
Do you leave the toilet lid up when you have finished? Yes!!!
Well friggin don't.
There are reasons for all of the above. Nothing complicated. Simple.

In Japan homes toilets and bathrooms are always separate.

Whichever. Doesn't matter.

The wife has a thing about leaving it down, and gets aggressive if she finds it left up. So for the sake of domestic harmony...

No rules for anything in my house. It is almost always down. If you wet it, you clean it. Aim well. Simple. Harmonious.

Freedom. No rule

For the most part. And particularly in houses. But I've been in a few tiny, mostly old, apartments in which it's all been the one room.

Depends on the wind direction.
