Why not cut out the middle man here? Load up a tanker and let it out near the fake islands China is making.

This whole, sorry episode is yet another reminder of the CCP's economic coercion, and why it can never be trusted.

But it agreed in September to lift the ban, contingent on its participation in additional monitoring activities.

It was also invited to do so a year earlier but refused, so that the CCP could spend a year implementing its usual economic coercion.

https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/china-declined-join-iaea-system-monitor-fukushima-water-kyodo-2023-09-05/

Nothing has changed in that past year: the plan hasn't changed, the release has gone according to that plan, and the IAEA has monitored the entire process. The only difference now is that the CCP thinks it's inflicted sufficient pain on Japan and "taught it a lesson" - all, of course, in contravention of WTO rules.

The only thing the CCP has really achieved, however, is reminding the world why it can never be trusted.

China introduced a blanket ban, calling the released water "nuclear-contaminated."

The IAEA has repeatedly stated that the plan is consistent with international safety standards, and that it would have a negligible impact. Zero problems have been found in its monitoring thus far.

If China were truly concerned it would address its own plants, which release far worse.

I see nothing bad with that.

China wants feel sure abt radioactivity level and if Japan have nothing to hide...better than spread antichinese hate as can see above...

I see nothing bad with that.

Then, perhaps you don't understand WTO rules, or are conveniently ignoring them.

China wants feel sure abt radioactivity level

You are kidding, right?? China cares about radioactivity levels? They should check the coastal waters of their own nuclear power plants for a comparison.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/25/fukushima-daiichi-nuclear-power-plant-china-wastewater-release

and if Japan have nothing to hide.

Japan has nothing to hide and had agreed to China's "Sampling" in September. But Japan also requested the IAEA to be involved so as to ensure fairness and objectivity. Because we all know China!!

better than spread antichinese hate as can see above...

I see nothing anti-Chinese written above. It's all about economic coercion and the behavior of the CCP.

Japan should reciprocate and sample water being discharged by Chinese nuclear power stations

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Why?

No Chinese NPPs have had a triple meltdown with MOX fuel.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

Japan can sell their fishery products to India or U.S., just leave China alone. Then there won't necessary of radiation level to check. For China, they are happy to import the same seafood from Russia or Canada !

Japan should reciprocate and sample water discharged by Chinese nuclear power stations.

No valid reason for the above procedure because never a Chinese nuclear station have ever had an accident of leaking radioactive substances like Japan had !

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

It's all about economic coercion and the behavior of the CCP.

If those procedure demanded by the Chinese side is a kind of coercion, then the Japanese fishery business should leave China market now. Alternative market : US, India or Vietnam these are your friendly countries. Why bother with the unfriendly China ?

If those procedure demanded by the Chinese side is a kind of coercion

The "procedure" was agreed to by Japan over a year ago (despite already being covered by the IAEA monitoring anyway). China refused, purely so that it could implement its economic coercion for a year.

The WTO rules are very clear. You cannot ban imports over supposed "safety" concerns unless there is a valid reason. China never proved this, and it did not engage in good faith negotiations to resolve the issue when asked to do so.

China violates at least these two articles.

You do not need to have an accident.

"China's own nuclear power plants release wastewater with higher levels of tritium than that found in Fukushima's discharge"

Japan certainly should have the right to inspect Chinese nuclear power plants discharges. Both nations are members of the IAEA but only China (a member since 1984) refuses to accept the Agency's position.

Neither Russia nor Canada can supply all the species that Japan does. Furthermore, the quality is much higher because of the Japanese uncooked fish culture.

But you are right, Japan should simply ban seafood exports to China. Chinese will have to visit Japan to have Japanese fish. Like they are doing now.
