Japan gave refugee status to a record-high 303 people in 2023. But the number is tiny in comparison to European countries, where refugees are taken in by their tens of thousands annually, and the United States, which recently raised its yearly cap to 125,000.

That's 303 people not 303 thousands of people. So every case asylum JGovt want to make good PR of it.

Good for him, hope he finally gets to live in peace.

Nice step but japan still does not recognize foreign same sex unions for spouse visas so in a way discriminating and not keeping up with international law they agreed to in reciprocal acknowledgement of marriage.

And here I thought Japan wanted to solve its population problem... Guess I was wrong

Why Japan??, Could he have gone to the nearest country and asked for asylum??..

Great majority people travel to Japan from the other side of the world with false asylum applications..

This may not be the exception..

Be careful Japan..

The right moral decision.

Cool. Good luck to him.

What happened to the partner ? Did he stay in his country where his life is in danger ? Or he will join him in Japan too?

Good excuse. Why not other countries?

Maybe choosing Japan was not the smartest choice.

Considering the very low number of people granted asylum status in Japan I am not too sure that it is the most efficient way to get in Japan.

Actually legal immigration is wide opened these days so why would they need fake applications?

Perhaps the same reason why you don't live in other country

Even if you put aside race/integration/identity/etc, I don't think importing gay men is a solution to the population problem long-term for obvious reasons.

@majikayo!

japan, you do you, don't turn into europe or the usa.

You obviously aren't Buddhist. Otherwise you would know that tolerance is one of its core principals, and it is an idea that dates way back, long before the USA or even Europe.

I certainly sympathize with his reason for seeking asylum. But I don't know why he would choose Japan.

he made an application for refugee status in January 2020

He's been waiting a long time.

What about his partner? Where is his partner? Did he abandon his partner?
