Japanese citizens in LA urged to be cautious amid protests

Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya on Tuesday called on Japanese citizens in Los Angeles to be cautious about protests in the U.S. city against President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

"We will continue to closely monitor the developments in Los Angeles with grave interest," he said at a press conference.

Iwaya said that the government will take all possible steps to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals, adding that there have been no reported injuries among the Japanese community so far.

Los Angeles and its surrounding area is home to the largest number of Japanese nationals overseas, totaling some 64,000 as of October 2024, according to government data.

The protests since Saturday against raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have intensified after Trump, a Republican, deployed Sunday some 300 National Guard troops to quell them, despite no request from Democratic California Gov Gavin Newsom.

Safe assumption all Japanese documented and legal no doubt.

Best to stay home while the federal authorities work on the backlog to offshore.

That city and state have become a hellscape which needs correction fast to make it safe for Americans and legal immigrants just like these.

Be especially careful of masked thugs who are actually the law grabbing people of the streets without probable cause or a warrant.

Maybe an idea not to walk with Hispanics as the government seems to suspect all of them.

Not only Hispanics. The authorities have been firing rubber bullets directly at, and gassing legal Australian and British citizens over there. Three reporters simply doing their jobs. There is a genuine concern they would also target legal, innocent Japanese citizens in the same way.

An Australian female reporter was hit in her leg with a rubber bullet even though she was in a press group. There are many American-born Japanese in LA who will know what to do about living there. About 100,000 people.

ICE need 3,000 person per day, they do not care who they take.

Eh, I'd extend that to "anyone who doesn't look like a commercial for middle-class, white bread, 1950s America". Just to be sure.

MAGA supporters are misguided and often too paranoid about who is responsible.

Japanese people are generally too respectful and community-minded to be associating with illegal, ungrateful thugs - many of whom were handed every opportunity by the U.S. and now show their gratitude by burning American flags. They’re also far too decent to be caught up with masked Antifa clown radicals whose only goal is chaos for chaos’ sake. Good on Japan for warning its citizens.

-3 ( +18 / -21 )

American-born Japanese descendants are not Japanese, so this warning is for Japanese tourists, students, and businesspeople.

In 2023, Los Angeles welcomed 230,000 visitors from Japan, a 91.7% increase from 2022.

Yes, DHS agencies have advanced identification methods from an investigative and technological standpoint. Right now, the federal authorities are scooping up a multitude of intelligence that will be actioned upon later.

Safe assumption is foreign flag wavers and other rioters will regret this. Indeed, they fell for the strategy to get them to appear all in one place, making future identification easier. Fusion Centers will be having a field day soon. Then the roundups will upsurge.

One would be surprised if any Japanese nationals are caught up in this violent riot. Most - this means all - will have the common sense to stay well away from this volatile situation. Article reports no injuries so far supports that.

Once protesters start to burn cars and property as well as loot others' private property then they step over the line into criminals. Nobody with any common sense should be out there now even if watching.

Cue the hypocritical condemnation of oppressive Central and South American leaders and politicians who do much worse to their own people as a matter of course in their own countries with little respect for or history of the rule of law and a lot of military involvement in law enforcement.

And of course the self righteous wimp 'leading' Australia 'condemned' as 'horrific' an Australian reporter whose network was dumb enough and uncaring enough to put her right near the line of fire. The hypocrisy of those 'outraged' by this but not by so called protests becoming excuses for thuggery and destruction never ends.

These are Mexican American citizens, supporters of their fellow citizens

Anyway, I'm seeing breaking headlines about tear gas being fired into the Little Tokyo neighbourhood of LA, so it seems like the foreign minister was smart to make this announcement.

JJE,do you think that will quash this protest and what will they do babysit Ice Agent, they have no legal authority on civilian

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

Japan should urge its citizens to leave LA - and never bother going back.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Japanese American probably support the mostly Mexican protest, knowing their history with White oppression, Japanese American do not think Japanese in Japan, they are more liberal and progressive, they know if they want to gain power,it coalition with Mexicans and other minorities

Anyway, I'm seeing breaking headlines about tear gas being fired into the Little Tokyo neighbourhood of LA,

Is this true? Then Police must push out the violent protester if they come to Little Tokyo peaceful area. Japanese in LA are honest people who respect police and law, not involved in dangerous actions like some of the protester who attack police. News videos show protester they throw rocks at police and destroy police cars, Molotov cocktail at police officers, burn taxis, break windows, spray grafitti and burn American flags and more. Japanese people respect police in such situation.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Just stay away from the 6 or 8 city blocks where the protests/riots are confined to. Problem solved.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

The Little Tokyo district of LA is where a cluster of relevant federal buildings are located - including the Metropolitan Detention Center. Also, the city hall.

Although activity has taken place elsewhere, this is the fulcrum point of the riots - just by circumstance of geography.

Nearby is a street with a prominent hotel that has a big mural of a well-known Japanese baseball player. That street and mural have been backdrops to rioters confronting police.

LA is a globally recognised iconic destination under siege, by a mob of vandals, arsonists, rioting thugs.

Action is now a matter of urgency, a national emergency, measures that will bring back law and order to the streets of LA.

MAGA supporters are misguided and often too paranoid about who is responsible.

No, we're laser-focused.

As for the Japanese community knowing it very well, they should be Ok, Little Tokyo should be safe for the most part, but a huge chunk of the Japanese community lives in Torrance and Gardena overwhelmingly, so they are quite a safe distance from these radicals, they don't have to worry about getting in the mix unless they want to join in with the radicals and I seriously doubt they will

Except if you’re a brick thrower in Hong Kong. Trump is handling it well and according to the textbook.

Nothing quite like a good old-fashioned panic over foreign protests to send bureaucrats into a tizzy. The advisory reads like a nostalgic throwback to wartime paranoia—except instead of internment camps, it’s just a polite suggestion to avoid getting caught in a riot while shopping for overpriced oat milk in downtown LA.

Nope. That's utter bs.
