for 6-month event focused on sustainable society

Japan is anything but sustainable, still using coal for energy supply, old society with population that currently decline and slow economy growth. Even that photo ops, show only oyaji over 60s even 70s who really have right to run Japan. Where's the young generation for sustainable society?

5 old men cut a ribbon during....

Fixed.

Believe Japan desperately looking for 'sustainability' answers, as the oldest and most rapidly depopulating country in history during peacetime...

Time to embrace today's world, rather than ancient past

So they're roughly going for crowds 25-30% bigger than Nagoya Expo which had 22 million people with a record 165k one day attendance.

Some 28.2 million people are projected to visit.

Osaka previously held it in 1970, an event that drew more than 64 million primarily domestic visitors …

They’re expecting over 36 million fewer visitors than they had in 1970!

What does that tell us?

1 ( +10 / -9 )

The numbers tell the TRUE story, nobody looking to Japan for answers, rather the EXACT opposite

Nagoya Expo which had 22 million people

Of those 22 million visitors to the Aichi Expo, 17 million purchased tickets.

Today was a very crowded day on Yumeshima even though the weather took a turn for the worse.

Off to a good start it seems…

A $240 million wooden structure which will be torn down and according to a Yomiuri Shimbun report only 12.5% recycled doesn’t sound like the model of ‘sustainability’.

Lots of whining from people that went today. Not sure why people choose to go on the first day and expect to be catered to.

" Osaka Expo opens for 6-month anachronistic waste of tax payers money and time "

Fixed the headline for you.

There needs to be more space for bicycles on Yumeshima and what’s that rule about pushing bicycles across the bridges?

Do drivers of cars need to get out and push their vehicles too?

"...waste of taxpayers' money and time."

Poor spelling and punctuation have been corrected for you...

Advance ticket sales have been slower than expected. Data current to Wednesday showed around 9 million advance tickets had been sold for the event since November 2023, far off the organizers' 14-million target.

My company has already given away free Expo tickets, and I’m sure many other companies have too.

Today was a horror show, according to lots of visitors posting on Reddit. Lots of rain, crushing crowds, endless lineups, half the restaurants closed, reservations need to enter pavilions, and jammed entrance and exit points as it's built on an island.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

Sounds like a bleeding horror show to me and they don’t even take cash!!!

Am I going to visit there? No way Pedro!

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

Wishing the World Expo all the very best. It seems huge numbers of foreign tourists are desperate to visit - which is exactly the aim of the government. I think the projected million in 6 months can be achieved. Massive interest on social media.

I think the projected 30 million in 6 months can be achieved!

We went to the one in Aichi. We camped by the beach on Ise Bay. It was a great family trip. I wouldn't go now without children.

This celebration capitalism waste over 10 trillions from taxes, victimize even recovery of Noto peninsula, prioritize profit for handful stakeholders than safe, use huge amount of import wood and dispose its most, it's far from "sustainable".

Organizer had spent over 3 billions yen about preventing gus-explosion and insisted safe.

But, last week, who discovered and revealed methane gus' explosion level leak was one of local city council member, not them.

Organizer are mere incompetent and dangerous.

Been reading reviews about this and watched a couple of videos on YouTube, it’s not great and the beastly weather didn’t happen. Saw a video where some chap went to have an “Arabian Coffee” whatever that is. 1000¥, yes that’s right 1000¥ and to top off it being an outrageous prices it was in a cardboard cup ( eco friendly you see). Also if you have luggage to store, have no fear, the storage charge is a measly 10,000¥

Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?

I actually visited it yesterday.... Endless lines all the way from the station to the entrance. Once inside there was no place to hide from the rain, the toilets were packed with people seeking shelter against the rain. Pavilions needed a reservation. Summer is going to be hell too as there is no place to hide from the sun. I don't know about the prices, one hour wait to get into a shop stopped me from entering. For some reason nobody could connect to the internet either with their phones through their carriers, and there was no internet. It was one of the worst days, I

designing a sustainable future society, in what organizers hope will boost the domestic economy

Current human eco footprint is around 1.8 earths. The word sustainable and growth are now mutually impossible.

Steady-state economics is the only rational way forward.

not real interest to go.

feel sorry abt Osaka citizens to pay for this unecessary PR extravaganza.

think about making cost, than demolition cost.

outdated and totally unecessary.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Why couldn'e they have spread it around in a few cities /areas , no crowds easier for everyone .

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I will be in Osaka during Obon, hopefully it will be easy to get in and have a look.

I hate crowds and unnecessary queuing

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Saw a bit about it on TV just now, and even though the event itself looks great it seemed really crowded. And the tickets being on par with Disney land, it seems a bit pricey. Still I hope I can visit if I get the chance.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I'm optimistic. A project of that size is sure to have teething troubles, and I think some of the critiscism has been unfair. Day one! There is a long time to go yet.

some chap went to have an “Arabian Coffee” whatever that is. 1000¥, yes that’s right 1000¥

Have you been to starbucks recently? Or Lawson, for that matter. Its a special event, you're not going there every day. Treat yourself and stop moaning.

Also if you have luggage to store, have no fear, the storage charge is a measly 10,000¥

This did the rounds on the social media, but it turned out to be stretching the truth a little. The Expo doesn't provide luggage spaces for large items. The charge you mentioned is the cost of putting them in nearby facilities, which are milking and exploiting the situation.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Negative

No, I don’t go to Starbucks and pay for an overpriced coffee I go to local privately owned cafes (350¥) average price and it’s better and quieter clientel

The luggage info is on their site

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

The whole event is a hypocritical if sustainably is the goal.

It's surely all about prompting more consumption and consumerism. Why not just promote it like that?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The luggage info is on their site

Which clearly states that large luggage is unwelcome, and there are locations off site where guests can drop their goods off.

Would you take large luggage to a concert, football match or to an amusement park? Would you take it to one of your privately owned cafes? The instructions are pretty clear, they don't want people bringing their large bags and cases, so the cost is clearly intended to be a deterrant.
