Might need to have a permanent gps microchip implant in the body and grant access to relatives or friends.

This is what happens when you don’t have professional carers or facilities for dementia sufferers. They become the responsibility of the family who are not trained or equipped to care dementia patients.

So 295 were not found?

Maybe it's time to start putting "Have you seen this person" on milk cartons here. But then that would scare people away from buying milk, and family members would be mad due to their "privacy rights" being trampled on. Better to stay not found, than heaven forbid a little embarrassment!

If Japan is anything like the US, people don't want chips or radio collars in/on their parents. I could see how that would be different with your hero China, though.

At least most of the patients can be found, but close to 500 people dying is still something to worry about.
Are these individuals also patients with dementia? seems a disproportionally large percentage of the people lost taking into account the low rate of young onset dementia at those age groups, but it could be explained by the higher physical abilities that makes it more difficult to keep them from going missing.

This is an alarmingly high number of people with dementia going missing in a single year.
I'd like to see the statistics on how many of these people were left alone at home, under their children's care, who left for work in the morning.
Time to start setting up dementia centers and making sure you have eyes on anyone with dementia 24 hours a day. My father died with awful dementia. I couldn't imagine what he would have been capable of if left alone for 30 minutes.

its called a “my number” card.

It is hard to believe that nearly twenty thousand people with dementia are missing in Japan. No! Not hard to believe. It is impossible to believe.
Have they just vanished ? Have they died? Where are their bodies?Do their family members know anything about them?

Don't need a chip, just an Air Tag. Shocking stats about these poor people though. It's just plain negligence.

Some very alarming statistics....and also a very badly written and unclear article. I mean........
Is that just in this year or since records began ( 2012 ) ?

There is really only treatment and that is to make life as comfortable as possible for the sufferer, Don,t be a reactionary, It will bit you hard but remember it bitting the sufferer 3 fold. Don,t put the sufferer in care. face up to your responsible, as you both made a life commitment of of love sickness and all that BS. You being the healthy one just have pull you head and cop it sweet. Always be nice to the suffer even when say to you who are you and it hurt deep. You can not afford to feel sorry for yourself. there will be plenty of time latter for your feeling when the suffer passes on.

That’s the total in all Japan, not just those with dementia. That are reported. The younger ones could’ve just run away from home or moved out with no forwarding address.
But yes, not clearly written.

I am very curious, I take it, those 5 down voter would put their love one with dementia one into care and allow others strangers with no empathy and minimum time to look after their well being. ????? all of you want to hope you don't end up with dementia

Just life. Life is harsh sometimes for the living.
If not me, I will have demanded that my children do the right move if I ever get to that condition. No need to make your offspring and any loved ones suffer uselessly.

Anyone here with actual experience of dementia?
An unhealthy mind in a healthy body is an extremely challenging situation
It costs 100,000 yen on average on top of the national insurance charge to house a demented patient
There are those without these resources so the relations are left to work it out
Tens of thousands are at risk now that number will just increase
Where is the manpower and the faculties to take care of patients here?
They are sorely lacking…

Jonathan: I talking about your partner What about your responsibility to your partner. through sick and until death and that BS. So you would put your partner into care. Into a place were the Carer have no time for empathy because it interferes with their limit time allow for person hygiene and feeding per client.

Kuri: Yes I move back in with my ex wife because she has early onset Dementia, I have a the responsibility to care for her.

Dementia seems to be a common problem in Japan. I wonder if it’s linked to poor malnutrition with low protein food. Japanese restaurants don’t serve enough meat, or protein, with meals. Mostly, meals are formed of rice and potatoes with little bit of meat, and some salad. Unhealthy food culture during young ages maybe causing dementia at older age.

@bofington "This is an alarmingly high number of people with dementia going missing in a single year."
Depends if it's individuals or reports. In the UK I lived next door to a very old gent with quite serious dementia. He'd vanish about once a week and turn up at his old house convinced the current owner was his wife.
That was a couple of dozen police reports in the statistics for one individual. Then there were the reports we made to get the cops around because his wife couldn't open the front door and was screaming for help.
All very sad and distressing for all concerned.

I assume the of lack of empathy for dementia patients is the reason for these numbers judging by the attitude on this thread because there is no lack of empathy for pride rainbow crowd. Just look at the response to my comments. It can not be because most commentators on here hate me, it must be their lack of empathy for the aged community. You all have to live with yourselves. The Next time I see mis place empathy for the pride crowd I will remind you all of the attitude for the aged community.
