Sounds like the Japanese plane was deliberately flying close to the Chinese ship so got "buzzed". Something every other military in the world would do.

Sounds like the Japanese plane was deliberately flying close to the Chinese ship so got "buzzed". Something every other military in the world would do.

Not true at all. The Soviets would routinely fly TU-95 Bear and Il-38 May aircraft out to shadow our carrier strike groups. We had very strict rules of engagement to follow that the Soviets also understood as a feature of the INCSEA ( INCidents at SEA ) treaty we had with them. Each side knew the rules going in. We had to intercept the Bear or May no closer than 150 nautical miles from the carrier or the Admiral in charge of the strike group would be relieved of command. There were typically two fighters intercepting the Bear, one behind and outboard of each wing a safe distance. There was no buzzing, everything was very calm and professional. The Soviets also knew that the instant a bomb bay door opened one of those two fighters was going to shoot it down. Those were the rules of engagement. These intercepts were routine and both sides were always professional.

Here is what it looked like.

A better image of a typical Bear intercept and escort mission over an aircraft carrier.

@Desert Tortoise

While US only doing observation, Ukraine already destroy those planes last week.

-11 ( +6 / -17 )

All It takes is one incident for things to kick off and escalate. With all of the provocations, flexing and showboating going on it’s not hard to imagine something as simple as a midair collision leading to temperatures rising to very dangerous levels. It may not even take the invasion of Taiwan.

China has learned the power of narrative twisting and playing the aggressive victim like a boss, and has even drunk its own cool aid enough to believe they could make a case that the West is the aggressor at the start of a widening conflict.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

They’re getting bolder and bolder as they get closer and closer.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

The article the other day was ambiguous about whether Tokyo lodged a complaint about these two carrier groups transiting beyond the so-called 'first island chain'.

Naval operations within another country’s EEZ are permitted under international law, as part of freedom of navigation and overflight.

PLAN is entirely within its right to operate in and around and beyond the various island chains.

The 'island chains' were merely created by the US as tools of foreign policy and have zero actual legal basis.

-10 ( +3 / -13 )

Ricky...."something as SIMPLE as a mid air collision ..."

Probably not "simple " if you are on one of the planes.

More like "catastrophic death causing..."

If my calculations are right, this incident was around 150-170km outside of Japan's EEZ in International waters.

So, if the Japanese are flying their surveillance planes close to the Chinese aircraft carriers, who is provoking who?

Nice try , but if you brought a bunch of goons over and parked your mini van at the gates of my house, I’d go out and have a word. Most with any metal would.

The planes were only 45meters away from the Chinese carrier?

I've got down voted when I said China and Russia are the world's biggest bullies.

Every day, proof after proof.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

"Although there was no damage to the Japanese plane or injuries among its crew, Japan "expressed serious concerns" to China since "these abnormal approaches by a Chinese military plane may cause an accidental collision," the ministry said."

Just reacted the way China wanted, with emotions of fear. Next time show the Chinese crew who is the boss! Respects should be from both sides not from one side only.

"China has learned the power of narrative twisting and playing the aggressive victim like a boss, and has even drunk its own cool aid enough to believe they could make a case that the West is the aggressor at the start of a widening conflict."

"They’re getting bolder and bolder as they get closer and closer."

Yes of course, the Chinese Military doesn't have to follow DEI guidelines they go for the best Chinese warriors who haven't defiled themselves.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

Chinese shills are working overtime to try to justify this. Remember, they would NEVER give the same leniency if it was the U.S. doing this to a Chinese aircraft. Never forget that the CCP is the worlds biggest bully

A Chinese military aircraft had a near miss with a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force patrol plane over the high seas in the Pacific, flying just 45 meters away after taking off from a moving aircraft carrier, the Japanese Defense Ministry said Wednesday.*

The planes were only 45meters away from the Chinese carrier?

LOL. All news sources report that the Chinese J-15 fighters launched from the CNS Shangdong approached within 45m of the Japanese PC-3C patrol plane. Remedial English this summer.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

While US only doing observation, Ukraine already destroy those planes last week.

Look at the US Navy aircraft in those images. F-8 Crusader and A-7 Corsair in the first image, two F-14s in the second. All of those aircraft are long gone. Those photos are old. I chose them because they are representative of how we escorted Soviet aircraft over our carrier strike groups. No buzzing, no cutting in front of the Soviet aircraft. Everything was well controlled and professional.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

The planes were only 45meters away from the Chinese carrier?

After the J-15s took off one flew within 45 meters of the P-3C. The dangerous part was cutting in front of the P-3C. An aggressive Chinese pilot did something similar to a US Navy EP-3, the electronic intelligence version of the P-3 Orion series, misjudged and aerodynamic forces pulled his jet into the EP-3, resulting in a collision that blew open the nose radome of the EP-3 and making it basically unflyable. The had a choice of an open ocean ditching which is probably not survivable or landing on Hainan Island. I think you remember the rest.

Thanks again for providing good info but regarding the remember the rest part I don't think that was for me

China's close to the edge gaming begins to wear thin.

They are obviously intending to bully neighbouring countries whether they be Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan etc.

A simple mistake could / will result in death and an ensuing political storm.

Don't know why they think persistence in htis method will get them a positive result - it won't.

And a btw -

Japan's southernmost Okinotori Island within Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Okinotori Island is not an island. It is a small reef with a natural land area of a few squ mtrs.

According to the UN convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), of which Japan is a signatory, it doesn't allow such a rock to command an EEZ of it's own.

UNCLOS states: “In the exclusive economic zone, the coastal State shall have the exclusive right to construct and to authorize and regulate the construction, operation and use of: (a) artificial islands . . . .” UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION ON THE LAW OF THE SEA 927 artificial islands emphatically do not possess a territorial sea. They do, however, possess what is called a “safety zone.” Safety zones allow a controlling state to establish a 500-meter radius in which a state can exert exclusive sovereign control. Moreover, the plain language of UNCLOS indicates that states do not have the right to construct artificial islands in areas outside of its EEZ.

Japan claims an EEZ of 400,000squ kms - larger than all of Japan - because of 9 squ mtrs of rock.

Just doing the same as China's Spratly claims in the South China Sea - build an artificial concrete platform and claim exclusivity.

Only the 2 vested countries recognize their own claims.

Right. 'Cept, they aren't at the gates of Japan's house, if the article is accurate, are they? They are well beyond Japanese territory, hundreds of km into International waters.

Japan supports the scs arbitration results where that provision has been applied so theyll probably accept it too as applied to okinotori

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

Of course they fully support it as it was the Japanese head of itlos who nominated 4 of the 5 panel arbitrators

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

The Japanese govt. should apologize for their hawkish and frequent bullying harassment of Chinese naval and aircrafts IF they are sincerely seeking peace in the region. They have been stalking Chinese aircraft carrier for quite a long time. Willfully disruption of Chinese naval activities on the sea that out of their sovereignty or otherwise bearing the consequences, last time (2011) the Japanese govt. ship had a collision with a Chinese trawler lead to temporary cut of supply of rare metals!

-13 ( +2 / -15 )

That's right - the 'minivan' in this case is the MSDF aircraft and the 'gates of my house' are the buffer-zones of the two aircraft carrier groups operating lawfully in international waters. The Flanker went to 'have a word' with the 'goons' in said minivan - this means the intercept. Safe to say the pilot of the Flanker had some 'metal'. To that end he may have even flashed his weapon loadout to confirm as such to the 'goons'.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

Do what exactly? All we have are words. Show the evidence of this dangerous behavior, Japan.

Chinese pilots are being told to do this by their commanders.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

Chinese pilots are being told to do this by their commanders.

Not their mothers or wives?

Unsafe flying is the new harassment model. No way would a Chinese pilot fly like that without permission or orders.

Testing Response Times - by operating near Japan’s EEZ and the J jets, China might be gauging how quickly Japan scrambles jets or deploys ships.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Chinese pilots have a persistent habit of engaging in dangerous and provacative actions with other nations. It's so frequent that it's rather hard to conceive that they aren't being ordered to deliberately do so.

Dec 2022 Chinese J-11 came within 20ft of a US RC-135.

Jan 2023 Chinese J-11 does barrel roll within 30ft of US RC-135.

May 2023 Chinese J‑16 flew directly in front of US RC-135, creating turbulence.

Oct 2023 Chinese J-11 came within 3m (10ft) of US B-52.

Oct 2023 Chinese J-16 fighters came within 3-5m of Canadian Aurora Patrol plane and fired flares nearby and caused wake turbulence.

Nov 2023 Chinese J-11 released flares near the rotors of a Canadian CH-148 Cyclone helicopter and flew in circles within 100ft (30m).

Aug 2024 Chinese J-11 released flares close to Canadian CP-140 Helicopter forcing evasive manouvers.

Sep 2024 Chinese J16 cut across Australian patrol plane P-8A dropping chaffe into engine intake.

Mar 2025 Chinese PLAN helicopter flew within 3m (10ft) of Philippine Bureau of Fisheries Cessna Caravan (C-208)plane over Scarborouh Shoal.

June 2025 - Chinese J-15 came within 45m of Japanese P-3C Patrol plane near Iwo Jima.

So "dangerous" that there has been no damage. Just a few wet undies by reporters who "happened" to be onboard some of these planes just off the coast of China.

More USA propaganda that the JT regulars lap up. Japan media laps it up too.

It's inevitable the US is given a taste of its own cough syrup. China, cool as a cucumber, says “Right, mate, let’s see how you like it when someone pokes around your backyard.”

That scs arbitration really messed up.

First because it's an arbitration of one party only the Philippines.

One arbitral judge nominated by Phil.

Rest of arbitration panel nominated by the head of itlos ( well it's the procedure I think) who happens to be japanese.

Judges mostly Europeans ( nothing there if shown to be equally or more versed with the issues as the Asian experts)

American lawyers of Philippines submitted and argued the islands of the Philippines were not islands. Some or all of those islands bigger than okinotori.

Results were expected. Islands of Philippines declared as mere features and do not generate territorial seas.

Results spun as loss for china since china claims those islands.

Now south Korea and china dispute okinotori as island.

If south Korea and china cite SCS arbitration that Japan supports what now.

some things maybe be inaccurate please correct if you know better.

Anyway regarding this article it seems china was conducting activities in international waters and Japan interfered.

Japan's close tracking and monitoring is very dangerous and can easily lead to misunderstandings, misjudgments and accidents at sea and in the air. We urge Japan to stop these meaningless interferences.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

That's right - the 'minivan' in this case is the MSDF aircraft and the 'gates of my house' are the buffer-zones of the two aircraft carrier groups operating lawfully in international waters.

There is no safety zone or buffer zone around ships at sea. There is literally nothing in international law or UNCLOS that prevents a Japanese or any other nation's aircraft from flying directly over any other nation's warship. The Soviets figured out how the Fresnel Lenses Optical Landing System on our aircraft carriers worked by flying their helicopters down the glide slope basically to the edge of our carrier's flight decks. And we'de hose the m-f's with saltwater fire hoses or try to hook their landing gear with tie-down chains as they flew over our flight decks. All technically legal. I've flown over Soviet ships too. All in a days work. Nobody got their panties in a bunch over it.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Japan's close tracking and monitoring is very dangerous and can easily lead to misunderstandings,

Nonsense. Every navy does this. Literally every navy that has the capability. When a new major combat ship goes to sea for the first time other navies and air forces fly highly specialized aircraft all around the ship measuring its electronic emissions, taking detailed imagery and you drop sonobuoys all around it to record its acoustic profile. When adversary navies hold exercises you send your recce aircraft out to study their electronic order of battle, their tactics, how they use radios, measure the performance of their weaposn, etc., etc.. Standard stuff. It is only the Chinese who get pissy about this.
