What we all want to know is….how much money is Kishida getting as a kickback for the ‘funeral contract’ being given to his & Abes friend?
Cricky
I know the media are extolling his greatness! Bit I’m not convinced at all. He was just another self serving, destructive, grubby LDP suit that talked.

Abe never showed any respect to the people of Japan,in fact he only showed disdain by his refusal to speak openly about his many scandals and his many lies in the diet,so why should respect be shown to him?
A totally corrupt politician who wanted to take Japan back to that terrible time in the 1930s.
His Abelnomics is still bleeding most people dry even today with the ever weakening yen set to go fall even further.

Most Japanese people won’t be honoring Abe at all!
It’ll be another dreary day on a packed commuter train en route to a dismally paid job which barely allows for subsistence living…
Yubaru
Just like Abe and his legacy, ignore the will and voice of the people and do whatever the hell you want!

THIS is the ONLY reason he is being given a memorial sendoff. If he had died peacefully in his sleep, at a ripe old age, 20 or 30 years down the road, there would have been no state sponsored funeral.
Japan has too many "former" PM's to be holding memorials for all of them!
Michael Machida
Honor him for what?
The Avenger
What’s really disgusting is there was only one bidder for organizing the event so the contract automatically went to them. It just happens to be the same company Abe used for his infamous cherry blossom party.

The LDP needs a better PR guy. Getting assassinated should be bonus points for your party. Instead, everyone is talking about the corruption.

Also, there is way to much red on this page!

They forgot his two biggest moments.

Wow ..not much love for Abe on JT comments...
Mr K is not sorry to see the back of him, but those following him are no better.

Can you hear it?? The sound of all that money being syphoned off....
Oh and the irony that the agency that won the bid to organise this SF is the same lot that organised the scandal sakura viewing event! Amazing!

RIP to the man, but as a political figure, he doesn’t deserve much respect from us. He didn’t do enough to help this country. As foreigners living in Japan, we pay attention to certain things, and in some cases, we experience them. So, in a way, we know more than the average Japanese. The ldp always loved the apathy of the Japanese people and their ignorance, that’s what gives them power. But, now, the Japanese are asking themselves some questions and they want to know what happens behind the scenes (finally). Things will change.

And just like the previous couple elections which were after the strongly opposed Olympics, in the next election a year or two from now you can expect another LDP landslide victory.
noriahojanen
Replace "Japan" with "the Japanese government under Kishida" or "the Unification Church members."
divinda
Yeah, but some sources are more reputable than others.
Here's an article from the supposedly reputable BBC called "Shinzo Abe: Why a state funeral for slain ex-PM is controversial"
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-62976786
In it, there is zero mention of the Unification Church or any suggestion of the assassination motive, nor any mention of his from his bribe-filled hanami parties or the illegal school scandal with his wife.
No, the article just paints a rosy picture of Abe and the "stability" he single-handedly created.
Actually, to answer the "why is it controversial" the writer (who is otherwise respectable in his other stuff on Japan) says that the reason for protest is because such a funeral for a former PM is not "normal" and that some people are opposed to his stance on changing the pacifist constitution (but the writer also says that China is dangerous, so Abe was wise to do so despite the opposition of the apparently naive public).
Abe propaganda has no border.
Mr Kipling
Kobe white bar owner ..
Won the bid?
There was no tender, no bidding. They were awarded the contract with no questions asked!
That is amazing! Or rather an amazing scam!

Now is not the time to squabble over how many bribes he took, how many lives he ruined around him or due to his policies, how he eroded democracy and freedom of speech, exacerbated nationalism, even further poisoned relations in the region and stepped down after doing next to nothing during a pandemic.
Now is the time to offer condolences. To the people of Japan for having this as their longest-serving prime minister and second one to have a state funeral.
Kishida did the right thing by going through with it and not listening to the people who actually pay for it. Just as the late PM would have wished.
itsonlyrocknroll
There is a self inflicted political storm brewing.
To deploy political shenanigans on the inauspicious belief, dressed up as funeral diplomacy on the fridges of a commemoration of sorts to the legacy of Japans longest serving prime minster is erroneous when J tax payers without consultation have to pay.
This without doubt will come back to haunt the LDP ruling government, if on the day of Funeral wide spread demonstrations take place.
The underlining curse of a cult Moonies infecting every level of ruling government is front center. The very modus operandi of the alleged assassin.
vanityofvanities
It is a surprise for me so many negative comments written here about Abe and they are not rejected by the moderator. I thought Abe was seen more positively from abroad.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard on televised news yesterday that the security personnel for the event had been looking around for potential danger in all sorts of areas far from the venue. This includes swimming and diving around water streams, looking into manholes, and other odd areas. Was it really necessary to hire 20,000 personnel? If they truly believe a terrorist will target this event, not holding it would be the wiser thing to do rather than hiring people to do silly inefficient work.
William77
The attempt of glorify this hawkish ultra right wing corrupted man that wanted to restore a “beautiful Japan” according to the militarism way from the colonial era shows how little the LDP is interested about democracy.
qazwsx
After security failed him so badly, they are trying to make up for it by pretending to protect this sham of a funeral, where no major heads of state are coming, and somehow it costs more than the funeral of Queen Elizabeth.
Alfie Noakes
Sadly, the BBC is nothing more than a state-affiliated propaganda mouthpiece these days.
Yes, I caught a glimpse of this on the NHK news last news - there were divers swimming through the Imperial Palace moats and groups of coppers lifting manhole covers and shining torches into the murk, all watched by hordes of media. Pitiful stuff.

“ He didn’t do enough to help this country. “
*actually, he didn’t do anything; there was only damages;*

“ Things will change. “
*like everything else in Japan, it will take some time, but, that change is inevitable.*

Abe-san is smiling down at us from heaven now -- thank you for your wonderful Abenomics and the masks.
Sanjinosebleed
Well if the Japanese people really want change they need to vote the LDP cronies out at the ballot box!
Sven Asai
That’s all very far from any logic or merits. While he was in power the big majority got poorer, he even died afterwards , and now even quite some more money is thrown away for a big useless ceremony of which neither we have anything from it nor he also of course.
theResident
@Sanji: Very naive thinking.
itsonlyrocknroll
Of course this state funeral would always have to prevail.
Will public opinion change at the ballot box No!
A significant number of the electorate 18 to 25 eligible to vote, registered, refuses to register that vote at the ballot box. That is walk into a booth a mark their card.
Whilst elder member of J society vote in, time after time a ruling government.

Not Japan but rather his political party is martyring him to solidify their strangle hold on power. The death of democracy?

Luckily, the people of Japan are waking up to this sham. Hopefully, they will drop kick Kishida and the rest of the LDP rot out of power next election.
THIS!! Well said!

If I was a betting man, which I am not, I would bet the LDP win the next election.
