What we all want to know is….how much money is Kishida getting as a kickback for the ‘funeral contract’ being given to his & Abes friend?

I know the media are extolling his greatness! Bit I’m not convinced at all. He was just another self serving, destructive, grubby LDP suit that talked.

Abe never showed any respect to the people of Japan,in fact he only showed disdain by his refusal to speak openly about his many scandals and his many lies in the diet,so why should respect be shown to him?

A totally corrupt politician who wanted to take Japan back to that terrible time in the 1930s.

His Abelnomics is still bleeding most people dry even today with the ever weakening yen set to go fall even further.

Most Japanese people won’t be honoring Abe at all!

It’ll be another dreary day on a packed commuter train en route to a dismally paid job which barely allows for subsistence living…

RIP to the man, but as a political figure, he doesn’t deserve much respect from us. He didn’t do enough to help this country. As foreigners living in Japan, we pay attention to certain things, and in some cases, we experience them. So, in a way, we know more than the average Japanese. The ldp always loved the apathy of the Japanese people and their ignorance, that’s what gives them power. But, now, the Japanese are asking themselves some questions and they want to know what happens behind the scenes (finally). Things will change.

In it, there is zero mention of the Unification Church or any suggestion of the assassination motive, nor any mention of his from his bribe-filled hanami parties or the illegal school scandal with his wife.

No, the article just paints a rosy picture of Abe and the "stability" he single-handedly created.

Actually, to answer the "why is it controversial" the writer (who is otherwise respectable in his other stuff on Japan) says that the reason for protest is because such a funeral for a former PM is not "normal" and that some people are opposed to his stance on changing the pacifist constitution (but the writer also says that China is dangerous, so Abe was wise to do so despite the opposition of the apparently naive public).

There was no tender, no bidding. They were awarded the contract with no questions asked!

That is amazing! Or rather an amazing scam!

Now is not the time to squabble over how many bribes he took, how many lives he ruined around him or due to his policies, how he eroded democracy and freedom of speech, exacerbated nationalism, even further poisoned relations in the region and stepped down after doing next to nothing during a pandemic.

Now is the time to offer condolences. To the people of Japan for having this as their longest-serving prime minister and second one to have a state funeral.

Kishida did the right thing by going through with it and not listening to the people who actually pay for it. Just as the late PM would have wished.

It is a surprise for me so many negative comments written here about Abe and they are not rejected by the moderator. I thought Abe was seen more positively from abroad.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard on televised news yesterday that the security personnel for the event had been looking around for potential danger in all sorts of areas far from the venue. This includes swimming and diving around water streams, looking into manholes, and other odd areas. Was it really necessary to hire 20,000 personnel? If they truly believe a terrorist will target this event, not holding it would be the wiser thing to do rather than hiring people to do silly inefficient work.

Yes, I caught a glimpse of this on the NHK news last news - there were divers swimming through the Imperial Palace moats and groups of coppers lifting manhole covers and shining torches into the murk, all watched by hordes of media. Pitiful stuff.
