Someone has got to step in with the US ceding the region to China.

That's $3m in the pockets of corrupt leaders and their families.

They'll take that and then sign up with China anyway.

The Cook Islands have just done that.

The politicians in these islands will be having a field day playing everyone against each other on the global political chess board and receiving checks. Rarely do the locals see any of the cash as corruption is rife. Perhaps Japan needs a DOGE?

Whatever...$3million will build one sea wall but the ground water will still be salt contaminated.

And apparently, only poor, developing nations have corrupt politicians...really...I read it here on the comment section.

A little patronizing isn't it ?

Who on earth is saying corruption is limited to "poor, developing nations"?

People are constantly attacking corruption among leaders in first world nations - and rightly so in many cases.

Years ago we were sailing past the Azores and I noticed massive wind turbines on the islands. That is a brilliant addition to any islands who are constantly getting winds.

Wind turbines, solar panels, battery backup, and where practical, geothermal energy, are definitely better than paying to import diesel fuel for generators. Unfortunately, 3 million dollars is just a drop in the bucket toward what is needed. Definitely a step in the right direction, tho.

While California is currently the world leader in geothermal energy, the island nation of Indonesia is on track to take that title away from us within the next ten years. Bravo Indonesia!
