The US President 'mediates and arbitrates' business deals?

I was not aware of this.

-3 ( +9 / -12 )

the article doesn’t say who first said investment vs.buyout.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

This will not happen. This idiot speaks with fork tongue. Spit out more lies than a M16 spits out bullets. Nothing he says since 19/01 has happen. No tariff has happen. Canada and Mexico have taken his lies and gunna do's and use it to totally embarrass the USA on the world stage. They are not looking to the USA for leadership but are looking at China. The USA is a total embarrassment. Their Leader issuing false fascist action like his crazy speech on Gaza and Compare it China's response to the USA fascist rhetoric. China was like a master telling the barking dog to "get under the house". Nippon Steel stance is buy out or nothing. You can stick your invest only and you don't need the nod from this idiot to invest in USS, It is listed on the stock market you Idiot. Those USAmerican who are not delusional or in complete denial, do you feel totally embarrassed???

That calendar is a present a girl gives to her boyfriend in high school. Mr. Ishiba no wonder you failed in going to bat for Nippon Steel.

-13 ( +6 / -19 )

Ishiba described the investment as mutually beneficial and said Japanese technology would be provided to U.S. Steel mills.

The Americans have finally learned from the Chinese.

You get them to invest and hand over their technology, which they gladly do.

No Japanese would say the US is stealing technology from Japan unlike the Americans.

President Trump is being successful at making the USA richer…

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

Well that’s a win!

-6 ( +8 / -14 )

Buying equity in a company IS "investing". So this is a play on words to accomodate a shift in Trump's position. It also may indicate a partial Nippon Steel ownership as a solution. Regardless, it represents a win for both Ishiba and Trump as it promotes a constructive step forward in clearning this bottleneck. TBH I didn't expect this from either of them.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

You are now.

Well that’s a win!

Yes, A very nice win!

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

there are no secrets in advanced steelmaking. only swallowing profits without investing in them.

Correct.

The only question remains is what will be the Nippon Steel ownership. Most likely in the region of 30-49%.

The bottom line is, without substantial Japanese ownership, US Steel is kaput.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

Well that’s a win! LOL yeah for China. USS is on life support and within 12 months you will be buying Made in China steel tariff free. LOL

oh? How so?

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

No major shareholding stake, no major role in restructuring the old war horse called US Steel.

Looks like a dud arrangement for Japan and a short reprieve for US interests.

If US steel is moribund who is going to give the bad news....retrenchments...to US workers and management.

This is very clearly a WIN-WIN !

He also got Japan to invest more in building cars. In America.

another win!

-9 ( +5 / -14 )

It was unclear what the details of the investment would be, but Trump said he would meet with the head of Nippon Steel next week and he would be involved “to mediate and arbitrate.”

Why does such a statement freeze the soul, especially if Trump arrives at Nissan head quarters, sorry sense of humour warning.

What could possibly go wrong?

Ishiba noted Japanese companies have held the top spot for cumulative foreign direct investment in the U.S. over the last five years. He added that Japan was looking to invest more in the United States.

Well played

Nippon Steel “is going to be doing something very exciting about U.S. Steel,” Trump said at a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. “They’ll be looking at an investment rather than a purchase.”

I have little doubt that "Nissan" steel will continue to looking at making an investment, for some considerable time to come.

Yet Elon still builds Teslas in China...why does he have a "gigafactory" in China instead of one in the US employing US auto workers?

maybe the trade imbalance could be reversed by importing us rice?

"Yet Elon still builds Teslas in China...why does he have a "gigafactory" in China instead of one in the US employing US auto workers?"

The hypocrisy with some is both amazing and amusing, at the same time. Nonetheless, researching more and talking less is good because even when a fool is silence he or she seems wise.

"Elon Musk's Gigafactory Texas is a Tesla automotive manufacturing plant in Del Valle, Texas. It's the second-largest building in the world by volume and the second-largest factory in the United States by size"

Mind you Texas is not a State in China.

As typical, our MAGA-friends miss the entire point - what is Elon doing building "gigafactories in China employing gigas of Chinese" instead of building more of them here in the US?

Cheaper labor? Well, that is consistent with him wanting more immigrants tech workers taking US jobs, right?

2 ( +7 / -5 )

Since we have such devoted cheer squads on both sides, maybe we could start reporting on the Trump presidency more like a football match with stats, tallies and punchy headlines.

But just like a football match there will never be any consensus.

And we all know the ref has one eye.

like you missing the point that this article isn’t about Elon or China but “Nissan” steel investing in, not purchasing, US Steel.

which is yet another Trump win.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Trump said the US Steal gets a lot of investment from Japan Steal, no longer buy it. However, it is actually buying the US Steal (after 4 years). Trump can keep an American pride/face for 4 years if Japan said so.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I’ve said the whole time that investment in the US is what matters. It got Canada out of tariffs and it will probably do the same for Japan. Japan will have to step up its investment though - in 2023 it had the lowest in the US of all the G7 countries Hence Trump’s badgering

"The Art of the Steal"

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The Trump offense has moved the ball out wide in the first term. A strong drive in the wing with a push on tariffs has seen some gains and by the cheers in the crowd you would think the game won. But the Japanese defence is proving strong with an all out assault of flattery and charm. The details are still a little fuzzy at this stage but it is still anyone’s game. However Trump has been caught glancing at a photo of himself and has missed the opportunity to drive home the advantage. His teammates are faultering and unsure how to move forward with what we all know to be a one man show by this American team. The second quarter is going to be a thriller as negotiations head back behind closed doors. Stay tuned and we’ll be back after a word from our sponsors.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

How is this any different from owning stock in a company that you have absolutely no voting rights or be a non-controlling board member of, even though you own the highest percentage of the publicly sold company stock?

Worse - why would anyone begin to think about trying to negotiate any potential legally binding agreement with anyone who's not only a convicted criminal, but who clearly doesn't give a rip about any rules or laws that he previously agreed to in the past that established an agreement foundation? Who's the say that Trump won't renege on this possible agreement? He's already has done at least three times already within his first two weeks in office.

No, Chinese steel has a worldwide reputation for poor quality. Including within China itself.

Total nonsense. In 2023 Japan was the largest investor in the U.S., followed by Canada in 2nd place. Japan was the highest investor among all countries including the G7.

President Trump is making sure that trillions of dollars of foreign investment will flow into the U.S.On the opposite side wastefulness is being reined in for the benefit of US taxpayers.

"He also got Japan to invest more in building cars" in the USA. Can someone tell me where this mythical land of America is please. If you don't know simple geography No way you be able know the about Japanese manufacturing history. To move production to the point of sale has been a Japanese business strategy since the 90,s. Trump get no credit, Which as been Japanese strategy for decades. LOL. Just delusional thinking brought on by totally denial LOL. You back another loser in Trump. and can not face reality. LOL

Fact about China made steel in the 2020's

In the 2020s, China's steel industry has been working to improve the quality of its steel and reduce its environmental impact.

Quality

High-end manufacturing: The proportion of high-end steel used in automobiles, household appliances, and photovoltaics increased from 42% in 2020 to 48% in 2023.

World-class quality: Some Chinese steel mills have achieved world-class quality levels.

For poor grade steel it sure does claim a high % of the worlds market.

Another fascist myth proven false. LOL.

Yes watch LA import nothing but China made steel to rebuild because the USA manufacturing sector can not compete. LOL.

Your comments are appreciated but could you please post more clearly?

Thanks

Trump is just on a roll. Got Nippon Steel to stop trying to buy USS. All the questions went to Trump. Ishiba hardly got asked any questions.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

The U.S. president mistakenly referred to Nippon Steel as “Nissan,”

Dear lord. This coming after he told us what BRICS was. You know, that organization which he said had Spain as a member.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

You need to feel sorry for the Japanese taxpayers, being represented by somebody who is saying Yes to buying more America military, more expensive GNL and invest more in overseas steel without getting anything in return. Not to mention the Okinawa topic, where crimes committed by American soldiers go unpunished, or the fabricated lies about China from Washington, which do not allow Tokyo to prosper naturally as they should by trading goods with the main economy in Asia, because they would disturb the hegemony of the alleged ally

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Trump's word but none from Nippon Steel.

Japanese cars are a major part of the American automotive industry.

In 2023, Japanese automakers produced around 3.27 million vehicles in the United States. This was a slight increase from the previous year.

In 2023, 70% of Honda vehicles sold in the US were made in the US, and all Acura vehicles sold in the US were made in the US.

In 2021, 533,100 Americans worked for Japanese manufacturers in the United States. This was the highest number of Americans employed by Japanese companies in the U.S. ever recorded.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

‘’Mistakenly referred’ used to be called a ‘gaffe’ when. Biden made them. But it does look as though Japan has been well and truly outmaneuvered in its first dealing with Trump 2.0.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

How will affect the prices Japanese and US steel products? That is the question.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Don't do it, Nippon Steel! US Steel is a sinking ship and that's why they've been looking for someone to buy them out.

Trump is trying to convince Ishiba to have NS invest in the Titanic - a guaranteed loss. Nippon Steel is interested in taking over so they can restructure and make US Steel more competitive.

If Trump convinces them to just invest in US Steel and not take over, then he will have just pulled off a massive caper on Japan and Nippon Steel.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Japan needs to invest in Japan. Japan's domestic economy is crashing.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Sony bought Columbia Pictures in 1987, with no ill effect. As long as the brick and mortar stays in the US, what is the harm?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Now that sounds like a huge win/win. Well done PM Ishiba. He looks visibly chuffed. Round one in the hole! Congratulations.

The art of the deal!
