If it wasn't used then it was a non-issue right? Then why is Japan whining about it now? Sending jets into the area immediately escalated the situation, one would think that the dang phone would have been used before that.

You imply Japan caused the escalation. You use childish words like ‘whining’. Sounds like a spokesperson of the CCP. A foreign military aircraft entered Japan airspace illegally. Maybe it was the ineptitude of the crew or more likely a planned antagonizing incursion. Either way Japan has every right to protest. The free world is watching the belligerence of an overconfident dictatorship.

Just ask the Philippines. China doesn’t respect their neighbors’ borders at all.

According to internal operational guidelines of the hotline, the two countries' defense authorities are required to hold discussions before using the communication line.

Then actually this really isn't a "hot"line. It's supposed to allow for fast and direct communication when necessary. Back the dictionary for these two countries.

Elephant 2000

You evidently haven't seen the Y-9's flight path...

China is practicing freedom of navigation in the air !

China doesn't understand the meaning of FREEDOM!!

China has no credibility when it comes to another countries airspace or territory!

""Beijing is believed to have told Tokyo that it did not intend to intrude into Japanese airspace.""

And japan suppose to believe that 100%, Chinese ships are constantly intruding The Philippines waters and air space so this comes as no surprise at all in this day and age. All we can hope for is that cool heads will prevail and control such events.

Grow Up China.

Next time China will send "Balloon" for special secret operations. Japan is the home port of the 7th fleet. Should deal with them seriously !

No need for the hotline. The CCP knew exactly what it did, and Japan knew exactly what the CCP did. It was an incursion into Japan's space. Intentional. Provocative.

Next time, Japan should force the Chinese plane to land, then hold the crew and confiscate the plane while taking all the equipment to study what China can do.

Ya know, like China did to that P-3 back in the early 2000s. Only the Japanese pilots would be competent enough to do the job without risking their own life and those of the patrol aircraft, unlike the Chinese cowboy who paid the ultimate price for his arrogance.

The Russians have been doing this crap in Europe for over a decade now. They violate EU airspace fairly regularly, and that's when things were peaceful. You don't call on the phone. You drive them off with a show of force.

The best reaction would be an unexpected welcoming attitude of the Chinese airplane by Japan. Imagine the impact of a warm and friendly message in Chinese, saying WELCOME TO JAPAN! And invite the crew of any airplane or vessel to land and receive a warm reception, an invitation to experience the hospitality of Japan. Treat them as fugitives, as people looking for refugee, asylum. A Russian pilot did it some decades ago, so, now, it is the opportunity to receive Chinese fleeing, running away, looking for a better life.
