Everyone knows Trump proposed this lol

Definitely not the headline he wanted.

Ishiba managed to move the Nippon/US Steel issue towards resolution, address the trade imbalance without going into tariffs, and reaffirmed strategic policy.

Absolutely nothing of a loss here, for either Ishiba or Trump.

LOL, flip flop leadership, he stung his own party, twice now, chest thumping and all about his strong stance. But quickly shows he's spineless when the heat is on.

How long ago did he sing a different tune on Nippon Steel?

In one move, Ishiba manages to show the entire world how Japan foreign policy entails flip flop in the wind. Roll him please...at this rate I'd even settle for Kono.

i commented on the previous stories where maga was heralding trump as a deal maker, that it was unclear in the reporting who initiated the investment vs. acquisition idea. it was obviously voted down by the maga mafia,

Given how often this image/angle is used, I recommend investing in some paint for the roof.

Really big political win by Ishiba to negotiate the partial ownership of US Steel by Nippon Steel. He certainly must be a tough negotiator.

Hopefully the big investment from Japan can revitalise and modernise US Steel - and protect thousands of American workers' livelihoods.

If they aren't going to repaint the roof, I recommend removing the fifty feet high Stars and Stripes or making it a lot smaller.

So my questions yesterday - assuming they weren’t taken down as being off-topic - are now answered. It’s very hard to see pouring billions of dollars into IS Steel as a ‘good outcome’ when all Canada and Mexico had to do to avoid tariffs was dress up existing plans as new promises to Trump, but no doubt Ishiba’s support rate will go up in the next survey as surnames, the cost of living crisis and slush funds are temporarily forgotten. Well played , Ishiba.

Ishiba proposes Nippon Steel invest in U.S. Steel rather than acquire it

Booooo. Bad idea.

This is getting to look more and more like the film Gung Ho, the fictional story of a Japanese car company taking over a failing US car company, with all of the accompanying headaches and conflicts as they strove to integrate and become a success.

The film had a happy ending, no idea if real life will follow the same script.

Look at the state of that river running next to the steelworks!

What a joke.. Good money after bad?? Might as well just give protection money and save everyone's time/resources.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Anyway, invest in that moribund US steel industry is a joke..

maybe not if the US proceeds with a blanket tariff on imported steel from all countries.

It is easy to see what Trump is trying to do, reinvigorate the US manufacturing base by making it more expensive to import.

But what he has not considered is that the punitive measures he places on other countries will be reciprocal.

The difference is that acquiring US Steel means Nippon Steel is in control and can make necessary reforms and modernizations. Just investing means pouring good money into a knowingly unprofitable business run by incompetent management.

Though tariffs weren't discussed directly, undoubtedly, this was a case of ...

Hey, Mr. Ishiba, stop the Nippon Steel deal on your end and I'll probably not place tariffs on Japanese auto imports.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Yes,that was a good idea. Just dump your money in a very old and mismanaged corporation and without any says. Ishiba knows where the place they are !

This article:

“Ishiba proposes Nippon Steel invest in U.S. Steel rather than acquire it”

another article:

“What do you think of U.S. President Donald Trump's suggestion that Nippon Steel invest in U.S. Steel rather than buy it?”

guess the media putting out both narratives simultaneously until they see if it works or not.

The Tariff President has struck again.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he will introduce new 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the U.S., on top of existing metals duties, in another major escalation of his trade policy overhaul ...

The largest sources of U.S. steel imports are Canada, Brazil and Mexico, followed by South Korea and Vietnam, according to government and American Iron and Steel Institute data.
