DJT's right, Japan has to carry more defense burden and equalize on trade, and stop manipulating the currency via BOJ artificial low interest rate 'scheme' etc.

Yawn, the open sore speaks.

Everyone in Tokyo knew this was coming, time to lower tariffs here ahead of April 2nd, and match US rates, in order to help Japanese consumers get more choice and more market competition - lowering prices for a change!
wallace
Japan should ask for the US to pay for the $1.1 trillion US debt it holds.
HopeSpringsEternal
It's also high time for Japan to 'catch-up' in Defense spending, as underinvestment's been ongoing since end of WWII - nearly 80 years ago! 3% of GDP, given North Korea and China, would seem a bare minimum.
Nator
Is he taking into account things like digital goods and services when he keeps claiming that every country in the world is taking advantage of the US?
Because almost everything we use is funnelling profit into the US (Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Android, etc..) and most of these huge US companies aren't paying much, if any, local tax.
In the UK, for example, US investment has basically taken over 30%+ of the UK economy, so most of that profit is getting funnelled into the US and not back into the UK, though it might not be immediately obvious in the figures.

To ease the burden on the US for the Alliance, Japan should start manufacturing its own weapons........again.

Japan free to sell their US Treasury investments anytime, world's most liquid market.
US bilateral issue remains Japan like the EU, needs to take on more responsibility for its own security and defense and open up its markets via lower tariffs to match US rates - helping consumers in the process.

Here we go. It's Japan's turn is it, Donald?
The US was well aware of Japan's Article 19 when it entered the agreement, but it knew that the alliance greatly benefits the US too, as it provides unparalleled forward basing and readiness (amongst other benefits). If China starts trouble, without bases in the area the US would have to ship/fly everything across the Pacific, and this "tyranny of distance" would be disastrous. Even without such a contingency, having bases in the region enables freedom of navigation operations, training, intelligence, and many other vital things.
All presidents apart from Trump have understood this. (However, if Trump is planning a heel turn with Xi, as he has with Putin, I can see that he wouldn't care.)
Is he talking about the bases here? It's difficult to tell with his insane rambling (sorry, "weave"). If so, Japan contributes more than its fair share.
To put it in Trump's parlance, the US gets a very good "deal," though I don't expect him to understand this.
Much smarter and better-qualified people than you, Donald. People who actually understand geopolitical and military matters.
wallace
How much does Japan pay for the US military bases?
The Japanese government paid ¥217 billion (US$2.0 billion) ... Approximately 74.7% of all the U.S. military facilities.
In 2022, Japan's upper house on Friday passed a new agreement with the US to spend ¥1.05 trillion ($8.6 billion) over five years on hosting American military.

People must be reminded that high tariffs do not equal high inflation. Just look at China and South Korea, very high tariff countries with lower inflation than Japan.
Trump's efforts to lower global tariffs will reduce global inflation and help everyone with the affordability crisis stemming from Covid and the Global Ukraine Proxy War.
Already the EU, India, Mexico and Canada have agreed to significant tariff cuts due to DJT tariff/trade pressure.

US troops are here both to protect Japan, and to deter/respond to China, North Korea and Russia. They're also here for other reasons, some of which I mention above.
The US has no intention of "attacking" China/North Korea/Russia. However, it will respond if any of them start trouble (at least it would have until Trump came along).

Old saying is "the squeaky wheel gets the oil", a motto DJT believes in firmly, why he's busy setting the agenda.
US has completely unsustainable Trade and Govt. deficits, why DJT moving so quickly to address these problems that grew unchecked under Biden Admin.
DJT campaigned on 'reciprocity' in Trade, BIG reason he was elected, along with border/immigration, wars, crime and downsizing US Govt. to name a few.
DJT just now delivering on his promises - hence upping pressure on Japan regarding equalizing trade relations.
The_Beagle
Protectionism lingers in Japan in specific sectors. Agriculture is the big one—rice, for instance, faces tariffs as high as 778% if it exceeds import quotas, designed to protect local farmers. Subsidies prop up rural economies, and cultural arguments about food security often justify this. Other areas, like pharmaceuticals or services, can have regulatory hurdles that subtly favor domestic firms over foreign entrants.
XCAndtheband
Just goes to show that no matter how much you try to kiss up to Trump, he’ll 100% stab you in the back due to some misinformation, perceived slight due to fragile ego, or lack of actual knowledge/understanding.
Time for other countries to let him and MAGA feel what it’s like to truly be isolated, as they claim they want.
Once they see how it brings down the country, there’ll be a mass revolt against this wannabe dictator and we can start getting back to real democracy.

Japan can lower the tariff on US agricultural products. Reciprocity is good.
Why does Japan think it can place tariffs on the U.S. but the reverse is unfair?

The US under Trump is no longer a country anybody can trust. If the Americans want to wall themselves off from the rest of the world while their president busies himself running crypto scams against his followers, delegating the task of directly stealing taxpayer money to Elon Musk then I say let them have fun with that. The rest of the world is not going down that stupid rabbit hole with you though.
Japan needs to massively up its cooperation with other countries, especially South Korea which is in a similar situation.

That depends on the exact circumstances. It's entirely possible that Japan could engage in Collective Self-Defense.
If any attack -- whether on Japan or the US -- "threatens Japan's survival and poses a clear danger to people," the SDF can engage in offensive operations.
Although he failed to change the constitution, Collective Self-Defense did become permitted during his term (and it still is).

MOFA: Japan-U.S. Security Treaty
Japan-U.S. Security Treaty
Treaty of mutual cooperation and security between Japan and the United states of America
https://www.mofa.go.jp/region/n-america/us/q&a/ref/1.html
The Japan-U.S. Security Treaty cannot continue to be solid foundation of trust.
So how should the Government of Japan proceed?
Politically diplomatically?
I suggest, contend, Japan has built a culture on silence dignity, not anger.
The shipping routes, the entire region is without doubt, proven to be economically essential to the global economy.
Japan is a essential forward base for a huge US military presence.
Also an essential trading partner.
Around 54,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed in Japan, mostly in the Okinawa region east of Taiwan.
However President Trump/JD Vance administration is proving to be an unreliable, untrustworthy partner/ally.
I sense the actions of an extorter/blackmailer..
So.......
Tokyo's economy, trade and industry minister Yoji Muto told reporters that he hoped his U.S. trip would "be a win-win for both Japanese and U.S. national interests."
Take this trip, smile, bow, nod.
However consider and formulate a methodology to turn this blatant, provocation, into an advantage.

What does WW2, Article 9, Taiwan aid etc. have to do with fair trade, the US having equal access to markets via equivalent/balanced tariff and non-tariff trade barriers?
wallace
Japan imports American rice tariff-free as part of its minimum access obligations under the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement.
The United States is a major supplier of rice to Japan, with the U.S. consistently accounting for roughly half of Japan's imports under the current WTO TRQ (Tariff Rate Quota).
The minimum access quota for tariff-free rice imports is 770,000 tons.

DJT's definitely not a strong dollar fan, wants far lower interest rates and trade deficits etc. Will work to achieve by increasing US domestic energy and manufacturing, while cutting US Govt. spending in order to bring down US inflation.
But...DJT also wants other countries to equalize on trade and more defense spending, making entire World Safer & Consumers far better off = More Choice & Lower Prices
Hiro S Nobumasa
To be fair what President Trump said is true.
On the other hand Japan can also demand more payments for Kadena and the other American bases in the Ryukyu Islands.
Tamarama
Well, it's unequal because the US wanted to ring China with military bases, as was their want and design on taking control of the country post WW2. That's a US geo-political policy.
You can't really blame Japan for that, can you.
And, they've used those Japanese bases to stage war in Korea and Vietnam, and sit as a silent threat to China for decades. I'd say the US has got plenty out of the deal.
But feel free to back out any time. I'd have no problem with less Americans in Japan.
HopeSpringsEternal
If Japan assumes full responsibility for its Defense and National Security, there should in theory be no reason for the US to have any military bases in Japan.
Problem for Japan, it's the oldest country in the world and rapidly depopulating, so the 'theoretical' above becomes a bit difficult in reality.
isabelle
It's limited in scope, but what I said is absolutely correct. Your own link even confirms it:
...
Article 2 of the Armed Attack and Existential Crisis Situations Act, modified in 2015, defines the standard as: “an armed attack against a foreign state that is in a close relationship with Japan occurs, and, as a result, threatens Japan’s survival and poses a clear danger to overturn fundamentally its nationals’ right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.” The foreign state is expected to be “a country which shares a common interest in responding to an armed attack from outside as a common danger and expresses intention to do so jointly with Japan.”
...
Its examples include armed attack against U.S. vessels transporting Japanese nationals; armed attack against U.S. warships conducting ballistic missile surveillance in the vicinity of Japan; or armed attack against Guam, where the U.S. military bases critical for Japan’s security in East Asia are located.

Japan's security problems are caused by its neighbors: China, North Korea, and Russia. They are precisely why the bases are needed. Japan gets on well with just about the whole of the rest of the world apart from these belligerent menaces.
If you mean neighbors other than the above three, then fine.

President Trump is having a wind up friday, it Japan turn.
President Donald Trump said Japan makes 'a fortune' from the United States, Japan is guilty of breaking and
"If they don't pay, I'm not going to defend them."
"We've been supporting the whole world...We were supporting NATO. We were paying the bills for other countries," Trump said, adding members of the transatlantic security alliance are "friends of mine" but he is "not so sure" they will come to help if the United States is in trouble.
President Trump.....
"Joe Biden is not playing with a full deck. This is not somebody you can have as your president, but if he got the nomination, I'd be thrilled."
President Trump must take a step back, realise fully who the "enemy" really is, recognise friend from foe.

CoPilot says: The Historical Context
Defeat and Occupation: After Japan's surrender in 1945, the Allied forces occupied the country. The goal was not only to disarm Japan but also to promote a peaceful, democratic society that would prevent future conflicts.
The U.S. Role: Led by General Douglas MacArthur, the American occupation authorities had significant influence over Japan's political and social restructuring. A major element of this transformation was the drafting of a new constitution, which came into effect in 1947.
Article 9 of the Constitution
Core Principle: Article 9 famously renounces war, stating that Japan forever renounces the use of force as a means of settling international disputes, and that it will not maintain land, sea, or air forces.
Drafting Process: While Japanese legal experts and scholars were involved in the process, the U.S. occupation authorities provided direction and oversight. This was part of a broader objective to demilitarize Japan and set it on a path toward a stable, peaceful society.
Long-Term Impact: Over the decades, Article 9 has become a symbol of Japan’s post-war identity. Despite ongoing debates in Japan about amending or reinterpreting this clause, it remains a foundational element of the nation's commitment to pacifism.
A Closer Look at "Imposition" vs. "Transformation"
Imposition: From one perspective, because the constitutional reform and the inclusion of Article 9 were carried out under Allied (primarily American) authority during a period when Japan was not fully sovereign, one can say that this aspect of Japan’s new identity was largely imposed by external forces.
Transformation: On the other hand, many argue that post-war Japan not only accepted but also internalized this pacifist clause as part of a broader, voluntary transformation toward peace. Over time, the renunciation of war has been integrated into the national identity, reflecting both the traumatic lessons of the past and a genuine commitment to peace.

the american-japanese-korean trilateral pact is not like the nato pact. an attack on one is not an attack on all, an attack will be “discussed” among the three. that’s it.
america has 128 larger bases (750 in total) outside the u.s. to project power and meddle everywhere it wants to meddle. military presence in japan is by america’s choice now. it was a buttress in the cold war with the ussr, and now with china.
japan has far away the most u.s. military personnel and for decades has been the most sought after duty of choice. it wasn’t long ago that u.s. military could spend their entire career in japan. that certainly was not because japan was taking advantage of the u.s.
when china makes good on its announced takeover of taiwan in 2027, will the u.s. intervene? maybe yes and maybe no. many chickenhawks in washington will want to because war is profitable and the lobbyists will be in their ears.
trump has no principles other than his own aggrandizement and has surrounded himself with incompetent fools. he’s a hothead with a big mouth. he famously asked in his last term what was the point of nuclear weapons if he can’t use them?
the u.s. is not going to win a conventional war in asia, so what will troops in japan be called to do? probably nothing.

The situation is not as simple as Trump's limited half-baked understanding.
It is true that Japan is not obligated to assist U.S. forces in wars that do not directly threaten Japan, ie; in other parts of the world. However, if North Korea, China or Russia attacks U.S. bases in Japan or a conflict in Taiwan threatens Japan’s security, Japan is legally allowed to respond under collective self-defense. This has now been extended to include situations where US Forces may be under attack while Japanese forces are not,
The US-JPN Mutual Defense Treaty was a US idea, with Japan obligated to provide bases in return for US obligated to provide protection. Trump is backpedaling on the terms of this security treaty.

Basically the media of most countries (excluding Russia, presumably) are now showing open disdain and mockery for Trump. He's managed to make himself, and his country, a disgrace and a laughing stock - simultaneously - within a matter of weeks.

The Dump has one orientation - they wronged us - let's make a better deal for us and worse for you. It's that simple a strategy and of some reason, perhaps readable in former agreements of different kinds, many nations are afraid of standing up to the bully. It's time to disconnect the US. Stop agreeing to idiotic deals. I think everyone knows that Trump is doing these things on a crowd pleasing base. That means in two or three years he is coming back with more of the same. Better to create new networks and trade alliances that doesn't suffer from, well lets put it mildly, a loose cannon.
JJE
Talking about it for 40 years - bingo!
Whatever one may think, DJT is certainly consistent. His public criticism of lopsided economics in defense alliances-spending commitments stretches back decades, to the 80s, when he was a democrat. This includes interviews on prominent TV programs and also going so far as to pay for adds in major newspapers pushing the same point.
One of these ran under the headline "*There’s nothing wrong with America’s Foreign Defense Policy that a little backbone can’t cure.*"
"For decades, Japan and other nations have been taking advantage of the United States" and that it has been "costing this nation in terms of the economy, deficit and taxes..."
"Why are these nations not paying the United States for the human lives and billions of dollars we are losing to protect their interests? ... The world is laughing at America’s politicians as we protect ships we don’t own, carrying oil we don’t need, destined for allies who won’t help."
The free lunch is over. Trump doesn't want America to continue on the path of declining hegemon. Rather he intends to change gears up and reshape it as a global great power in the new multipolar world, within a concert of great powers and decent sovereign states, utilizing evolving geoeconomics while making diplomacy great again. As such it needs lifters, not leaners. Backseat drivers and stingy passengers who think they ride for free need to get a reality check. Hand over your minerals or put your money where your mouth is.

There is lately everywhere on the globe the same pattern, even regardless of country, political or ideological system and such. Starting very promising, proceeding miserably without any expertise, and of course then ending in a catastrophic outcome. Obviously also Trump follows this pattern, intentionally or not, forced by the circumstances or not, that's not on me to know or judge. After World War II, it was America that forced Japan into the current, almost unamendable Constitution, and it was America that forced Japan to create the Self-Defense Forces after the Korean War. Japan should have been given the right to its own defense from the beginning, but it's more than half a century too late to change that now.
It's not Trump's fault, but it's a postwar American mistake, so it's pointless to hold Japan responsible.
Relocating US forces in Japan to Guam would serve as a reminder to Japan that the responsibility for protecting their own country lies with the Japanese people.

It is hard to have much sympathy for Japan which tried to do a deal with the US instead of standing firm with other trading partners. Japan was wiling to throw Canada under the bus by walking away from its MOU with Canada on the EV supply chain to try to avoid Trump tariffs.
Japan is reaping what they sowed.

@Agent_Neo The Japanese constitution is perfectly amendable, the problem here is strictly political not one of legality. If there were responsible people in the spheres of the CDPJ, DDP and Komeito, in the current situation. Right now they would be holding multi-party summits together with the LDP and Ishin.
Unfortunately, the main organs of these parties are 6-year-old children in the bodies of adults who have to satisfy, in ideological matters, their voters.
For the CDPJ, the vital issue is the question of married women's surnames, with their former maiden name.
For the DDP, it is to reach an agreement with the Rengo union confederation, in order to have the electoral support of its affiliates.
For Komeito, it is pacifism at all costs, as indicated by the religious doctrine of the Soka Gakkai.
Except for the honorable exception of Ishin, who is the only one who advocates a more intelligent sense by telling uncomfortable truths. And also some legislators of the LDP, non-Abe faction. The rest will continue to deny reality until the situation blows up in their faces. And when that happens, none of them will be prepared to digest the blow and their voters with terror on their faces.
And only then will there be a real situation to change the constitution by applying Article 96.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Article 9 was proposed by PM Shidehara:

Also most constitutions are hard to amend. That's not an excuse.

A mind-boggling comment, indeed. On the contrary, we've felt the treaty was very unequal, giving many favors to the U.S. side.
For example, Japan provides USFJ with many bases and facilities for free. It shoulders a significant amount of operating costs of these bases. Japan must shoot down enemy missiles supposedly targeting the U.S. mainland. U.S. service members enjoy many a perquisite while deployed to Japan.
And so on and so forth.

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan is not possible. China knows this, the Pentagon knows this. The imagined threat is a con by both China to exert pressure on Taiwan and the US for its usual anti China policies.

Both Japan and China are getting rid of US debt.
Japan was doing so to prop up the weakening yen.
China is doing so in order to sanction-proof its dollar assets.
Japan has started buying Chinese debt.
What the headlines say is different from the available data. The articles chosen show a lot of shaking hands with VIPs of allies, but data shows Japan is working with China.

How many times has the US Constitution been amended since 1945?
And how does the Japanese Constitution, which has never been amended, differ from the US Constitution in the way it is amended?
That's simply a lack of knowledge on your part.

On February 4, 1946, a working group was set up in the GHQ Government Bureau,
and they began drafting the Constitution of Japan (GHQ draft).
On February 13, the GHQ draft was presented to the Japanese government.
At a cabinet meeting on February 22, the Japanese government decided to amend the constitution in line with the GHQ draft. (There was no way they could say no.)
Can you stop lying about Shidehara proposing it?

Trump's been complaining about Japan's high tariffs and low expenditures on defense, forever, and some of the first political statements he ever made, as Japanese bubble investors were pouring $money into NYC in 1980s.

Reciprocal tariffs coming April 2nd, so Trump's achieving a long-held goal of fair trade with the entire world, including Japan. Hopefully, countries like Japan decide to lower their tariffs and other non-tariff trade barriers.
Consumers across the globe will benefit if tariffs fall and they have more choice and resulting competitive pricing.
And Consumers in Japan, US and everywhere NEED affordability relief, that more trade with lower tariffs!
HopeSpringsEternal
One great feature of DJT Admin policies, the massive increase in foreign investment it's attracting in order to avoid tariff risk, while benefiting from lower tax rates, less regulations and lower input costs, like energy etc.
Trumps just announced natural gas projects in Alaska will have Japanese and South Korean investors, eager to secure clean LNG easily accessible, supposedly largest ever LNG project that'll improve Japan's energy security.

Trump touts plans for “giant” Alaska LNG project with South Korean and Japanese support as he pushes for American energy independence. However, specifics remain scarce and even with Asian support the economics of the project remain in question, especially with a number of cheaper LNG projects coming online in the coming years.

Grump has a list of countries in the world. He will try to shake down as many as possible, breaking previous agreements, and lowering US status every time. He is currently on the J's. Japan's auto plants employ a lot of people in the USA, but that could change.
HopeSpringsEternal
DJT's natural gas and LNG Alaskan project specifics are scarce because this is a private sector matter, not Govt. $money like Biden Admin. Trump's just green-lighted the project, approved what Biden refused to do for 4 years.
Great way for US to better equalize its trading relationship in Asia with countries like South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, etc. = sell them LNG they so desperately want = DJT MAGA & Asia More Energy Secure!

Five times if we ignore the long delayed 27th amendment. And this is in the hyper partisan US.
The Japanese Constitution has a lower bar for amendments as it only needs a simple majority in the public vote whereas the US needs 3/4 of the states.
I think that statement applies to the one making it.

should japan set up bases in the u.s. and send troops to defend the u.s.?

Article 96 of the Constitution of Japan Amendments to this Constitution shall be initiated by the Diet, with a concurring vote of not less than two-thirds of all the members of each House, and shall thereupon be submitted to the people for ratification. Such ratification shall require the affirmative vote of a majority of all votes cast, either at a special referendum or at such election as the Diet may specify.
The LDP has never won a two-thirds majority in the Diet.
And a majority of the people would amount to approximately 50 million votes.
Unlike the United States, where each state has a representative, the reason the Constitution has never been amended even once is because it is difficult, not easy.
You're probably the only one who thinks it's easy.

Controversy over who created Article 9 of the Constitution
Regarding MacArthur's testimony, there has been a persistent suspicion that he was "forcing" the renunciation of war on Japan, but that he was trying to cover it up by saying that it was Shidehara's proposal. Based on recent research findings, the following explanation for this issue is possible.
Professor Ryuji Hattori of Chuo University has revealed that Hirota Yoji, who served as the defense lawyer for former diplomat Shiratori Toshio at the Tokyo Trials, said the following based on a statement by Kishikuramatsu, Shidehara's secretary.
"It is true that Prime Minister Shidehara first spoke about the idea or ideal of renouncing war, and that Prime Minister Shidehara and Marshal Ma completely agreed, but the issue of whether or not to stipulate it in the Japanese Constitution was not touched upon at all. Therefore, when the American draft of the Japanese Constitution was presented to the Japanese side on February 29, Prime Minister Shidehara seemed to be somewhat surprised, and the Matsumoto draft that the Japanese side had prepared did not contain any idea of renouncing war. Mr. Shidehara had no intention of stipulating it in the Constitution at all." (Ryuji Hattori, "Enlarged Edition: Kijuro Shidehara," Yoshida Shoten, 2017, pp. 278-279)
Thus, even if Shidehara considered "renunciation of war" to be an ideal, he did not seem to have any intention of including it in the constitution in a binding form. If that is the case, it would be inappropriate to position Article 9 of the Constitution as Shidehara's idea.
TaiwanIsNotChina
I never said it was easy, I said it was doable. The LDP should be able to work with other parties on important issues.
You said a "majority of all votes cast", which would be about 30 million votes

All I know is others say differently, so it would seem important not to claim the US was responsible without definitive evidence.

Are U.S. forces stationed in Japan to protect it or to occupy? Every evidence shows that it's the latter.
OssanAmerica
The US military is in Japan because it is obligated to protect Japan and it also serves the US as the largest and most important military hub for regional operations. It is in the interests of both nations. The Mutual Defense Agreement can be terminated by either country on giving 12 months notice, but neither country has done so since 1960. Japan has no issues with civilian dependants and employees tied to the US bases, and this is customary under SOFA for all US bases in all countries. They are not expected to perform military activities for which they are not authorized or trained.
The US has no reason to want it, Japan has no reason to do so, and has no military of sufficient size or capability to do so even if they did.
OssanAmerica
This is very true. Trump still thinks all Japanese still watch Sony Trinitron TVs. Even Americans don't watch Sony TVs anymore.
Trump also is unaware of the changes that have occured since then that now enable the JSDF to come to the aid of US forces under Collective Defense.

I love all this winning with Trump. Time for Japan to pay for its defense.

OssanAmerica's comment of Mar. 9 08:23 am JST is addressed to Peter Neil, but I take it to be addressed to me as well and so here's my answer to him.
OssanAmerica says that the U.S. military presence in Japan is for the benefit of both countries, but notice that the construction of a new base in Henoko, the so-called relocation of Futenma, doesn't serve that purpose.
Firstly, Tokyo and Washington have agreed that JSDF has primary responsibility to defend the security of the outlying islands; Secondly, the most active elements of Okinawa-based U.S. Marines are to transfer to Guam in the very near future. The infrastructure to house them and for them to train there has been completed with the partial aid of Japan.
In a contingency, could Henoko-based Ospreys transport Guam's Marines to hot spots in the Senkakus in time to defend them? In other words, the Henoko new base is a nonstarter and a sheer white elephant.
Even so, why is Washington trying to force Tokyo to complete building the Henoko new base? One cannot explain this but with the fact that Japan is still under U.S. military occupation.

Under such circumstances, can Trump dare say it's unfair that the U.S. is obliged to protect Japan while Japan is not obliged to protect the U.S.? LOL.

What a shame Japan has never owned up and mended relations with South Korea. All those Yasukuni visits by Japanese Prime Ministers and ministry heads and members of the ruling party just pouring salt into an open wound! Just think of the powerhouse alliance that would be if Japan and South Korea joined hands and where we would be now! The two could create a NATO-like military alliance with other Asian neighbors like Australia, Philipines, Malayasia, Thailand, India and more who fear Chinese, Russian and North Korean aggression. No longer would Japan, South Korea nor other Asian countries have to bow down and accept humiliating terms set by Washington and once again, by the Orange gibbon!
As others have mentioned above, it's time the Japanese to get busy and head to the gym and get in shape, start prioritizing government spending and instead of buying "Made in the USA" ramp up it's own military equipment and weapons capacity. Maybe it's about time to scrap Article 9 of the constitution, maybe consider having nuclear weapons as a deterrent, something I never thought was needed until now. America has lost her way and can no longer be trusted and it's time for us to find new partnerships and wean ourselves off the American teat for good.

US is fair weather friend who can not be trusted particularly in this tense and stressful global environment. Trump does not or never honor the treaty . He may lose the memory about Japan constitution was written by US after WWII. US wanted Japan to become pacifist nation without glorifying the military adventures of the past.
Although Japan has defense force, it is limited for natural disaster relief. There have been ongoing speculation about amending the article 9, it has not been speedy and productive enough.
US has never ever fought with Russia. It will not risk for close combat or long range war with Russia even Japan will face the Russia aggression same as Ukraine.
US has fought with China in Korea war. However China in 2025 is no longer same as China in 1950. If Japan and China will get high noon, more likely US will support Japan with weapons, logistic supply and intelligence sharing. Very unlikely it will involve with own troops. Japan population and military resources are very limited unlike superpower US. Japan is not strong as US.
If Trump will make unrealistic demand like pay more or else, Japan should choose later rather than former. Okinawa has been burdening for hosting bases for 81 years. There have been countless crimes committed by bored and frustrated service men. If they do want, they are free to pack and leave.
Sun will still rise from the east without US bases.

The America-Japan relationship has been unequal since the end of WW2, and arguably ever since Perry sailed his ships into Tokyo Bay. The current inequality is by U.S. design. The U.S. wanted Japan and Germany never to war again and to remain essentially vassal states under American hegemony. The way to achieve this was through permanently stationing tens of thousands of American troops in both nations.
For 80 years, this more or less worked. However, American hegemony has weakened in the last 20 or 30 years. Globalists desperately want to keep the game going. Trump, as a populist civic nationalist, is keen to undo as much of that globalist framework as he can. Politics ceased being right-left. The important divide is now globalist-nationalist.

On one hand, yes, I agree that Japan should pay for its defense…if America and Japan were equals.
America and Japan are not equals. Japan functions effectively as a vassal state. Oddly, Trump’s demands would push Japan more toward becoming an equal, which might not be a bad thing 80 years on from the war.
As it is, America does not pay for Japan’s defense. America pays for Japan’s disarmament or, more properly, Japan’s renunciation of war.
America also pays to have an unsinkable aircraft carrier in East Asia, without which America would have struggled to fight in Korea or Vietnam.
