Just switch to brown rice, which is still available and reasonably priced. Barley too. Both are healthier than polished white rice, thanks to their higher fiber content, and personnally I prefer their flavor.

If the food banks are "on the brink of collapse" due to the rice issue, it seems this association desparately needs better executives. LOL.

No need to make things complicated. Just import the rice, Japan doesn't need have to produce things by its own.

Brown rice is often more expensive than white rice. 90% of the rice we eat is brown. Also, whole wheat flour for bread baking.

Some of the government-released rice needs to go to the food banks.

So, my next rice nag, whine, moan groan, whinge.

Why wasn’t a portion of this LDP, end of the rainbow public owned paid for rice mountian, made available for food banks nationwide?

I buy brown rice, mercifully our farmer neighbours tutor me.

On how to store it, soak rinse it, then cook it properly
