quote of the day

The annual quota for flight departures and arrivals at Narita airport will increase from 300,000 a year to 340,000, effective in October, in order to meet flight demand in the Tokyo metropolitan area and better compete with other airports in Asia.

Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai. The expansion of the quota for the airport in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, the first since 2010, comes in response to increasing demand for flights, including among inbound tourists.

Is there any guarantee there will be no collision just like what happened in Haneda last year?

340 thousands departure and arrival, that means over 900 per day. Narita is not 24 hour departure and flight, only around 18 hour so it will 90 flight per-hour, hopefully those flight are safe.

They need to desparetly expand their immigration screening capacity. Last time I was there, it was about 30 minutes for the re-entry line. There were hundreds of foreign tourists overflowing the concourse, and were barely moving, most waiting in line for over an hour. Meanwhile, the Japanese just breezed through with no waiting.

My suitcase also didn't get on the carosel until well after an hour of the flight landing. So, here's praying that the authorities do a proper job of expanding the capacity.

@JeffLee

Forgive me if I'm wrong, haven't been able to afford to leave here for quite a while,but aren't those on non-tourist visas able to join the Japanese resident/citizen queue on re-entry?

Yes, the queue is really different, however @JeffLee might want to point the long queue for tourist visa which is really happening in many major Japanese airport.

This situation won't be get any improvement anytime soon, immigration and custom being done by government officer and so far there's no plan to increase those officers. Also those job can't be outsourced to 3rd party. So far there's no plan to increase employee being announced.

Last year there was a flight from Manila that being rejected because by Fukuoka airport because it's too late and airport just can't handle international disembarkation which require custom officer and immigration officers.

We're talking about Japan, not Heathrow London. In fact, any Tom, Dick or Harry from Japan and US, etc can join the same line as the locals. Strange how none of this is reciprocated for the Brits anywhere else.

No. you go to a "re-entry" queue if you have a working, study visa or permanent residency. There's usually only 2 immigration booths open yet when flights from certain Asian countries arrive, there's tons of visa holders who need to go there and it takes a long time to get thru. .

I hate Narita Airport with passion. It's the most full, boring and lifeless airport in the world by far. Not yo mention is more than 2H away from anywhere in the Tokyo.

To add insult to the injury, why do they have buss shuttles only until 6PM in the evening, when there are flights all the way up to 1-2AM in the evening?? Instead of 1 bus ride, you have to change at least 3,4 trains after 6PM.

This is ridiculous.
