Good luck with this attempt, they'll need much of it. From my experiences, voice recognition is surely interesting, but the development is very slow. I had this technology already in use in the early 90's , when the user could train the software by a microphone and give som easy commands to the personal computer by voice, like opening certain windows or applications, inputting some data vocabulary like numbers etc and give closing commands, for example. Now, quite a few decades later, everyone can try to do a lot more of course, but the average failure rate is still extremely high, even independent from the device type. The voice assistant based car navigation device doesn't work sufficiently accurate and smartphones also still don't. In fact, nothing has become much better, only the various possible kinds of usage have been broadened.

I think pirates would appreciate a robotic parrot, stable perchability, low-weight to maintain shoulder comfort, quite private, as it could squawk in your ear, iMac style range of plumages, talon-based security.
