Reads like they are doing all they can to contain it. Hopefully, China is sharing all their data world-wide so everyone in the field can work on a vaccine and effective treatments.
2 week incubation period is difficult. Means we won't really know how effective the steps are for at least another week.

Did some of you see scenes of that live exotic food market in Wuhan? Live beavers, snakes, deer, rats, etc., all alive and crammed in little bitty cages. Like a dirty little zoo. No wonder there's a problem with diseases. The Chinese government should shut such places down.
OssanAmerica
Has the WHO made any declarations yet? The numbers of infected and dead are increasing at a scary rate.
CrazyJoe
The total confirmed cases of infection has grown from 1275 to 1975 in three days; this translates into 15% per day of cumulative exponential growth.
If it continues in this growth projection the total cases could reach 13,800 in two weeks.
Let's hope it will be brought under control very soon!
Bugle Boy of Company B
There are videos surfacing where nurses, etc who are working in the hospitals treating these people stating the problem is much larger than the Chinese government is letting on.
Fighto!
Yes. Dogs, wolves, cats, bats and rats. In fact, anything that moves is considered edible there. Chinese diners eat live mice, which is considered gourmet food. All for sale in the street markets, considered delicacies - and all extremely dangerous in terms of spreading viruses to humans. If the Communist Govt. were serious about protecting its citizens, it would ban the barbaric practice of eating these animals as part of some "traditional culture" nonsense.

Wuhan food market :
The food market where the deadly virus surfaced offered a range of exotic wildlife for sale, including live foxes, crocodiles, wolf puppies, giant salamanders, snakes, rats, peacocks, porcupines, camel meat and other game.

Xi has no business fanning the flames of sensationalism.
The virus has been controlled for the most part within city boundaries.
There have been a few cases here and there globally, but only a smattering and not anything that is very concerning.
blahblah222
It will probably get much worse in Japan than in China.
At least the Chinese government is doing something.
Japanese government aren't even quarantining or isolating confirmed cases, not to mention that the guidelines are very strict requiring high-fever + respiratory symptoms + history of being in Wuhan (and only Wuhan city) to even become a suspected case.

He is no longer a "president." Xi has announced that he is the president-for-life. President-for-life is EMPEROR. He is now Emperor Xi of the Chinese Empire. Call it what it is. Think I am joking? Then you are insane in an insane world.

To slow the spread of a virus that is spread from person to person, wouldn't it be more logical to ban taxis and other public transport, but NOT private cars? You are much more likely to get sick when you use transportation that is used by many other people. Logic, anyone? It seems China is using this emergency to see how much they can control people, not just control the disease.
JJ Jetplane
The virus has killed mainly old men with health issues. Also, primarily old people with health issues. Most young and middle-aged people have recovered.
What scares people is that all previous drugs for all the previous strains are not effective against it.

Fighto!
@ Mark McCracken - thanks for the link to the preliminary study. If proven by peers, the findings are alarming. The key points: The incidence of this virus is up to 20 times higher than reported by the PRC govt. Possibly up to 50,000 carriers now. Carriers of the virus are infecting between 3.5 and 4 others.
Some of the posters who have posted dismissive comments like:
Should absolutely read this report.

Fighto!Today 01:45 pm JST
But when it’s whale, the “eating these animals as part of some "traditional culture"” attitude is OK, right?
You know your mantra, “Their country, their culture” etc. etc. etc.???
albaleo
True, but the other consideration is what happens at the destination (office, supermarket, whatever). If the aim is to reduce the overall level of person-to-person contact, and the number of taxis is limited, banning private car use may be better.

For those that want to track the world-wide spread of this virus, use the link below:
https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6
As I post this 18:47 JST, there are now 2,019 confirmed cases world-wide, 56 dead and only 49 that recovered from the virus. Those aren't very good odds.
blahblah222
On what data are you saying people are recovering?
Based on the published data, very few have recovered. The death rate will inevitably go up as most cases are still under-treatment.
oldman_13
Despite the hysteria and sensationalism, this thing is pretty much under control.
The fact that they are able to even track those infected outside of China, and that those numbers are incredibly small, proves this.
blahblah222
Maybe controlled in other country, but not Japan.
Part of the reason it is low in Japan compared to other countries which have less tourists is because Japanese guidelines makes it hard to label someone a suspected case to get tested, which requires someone to have high fever (37.5+) AND respiratory symptoms AND came from Wuhan city (and only Wuhan city).
The MHLW won't even admit that this disease transmits human-to-human in yesterday's news conference regarding the 3rd confirmed case, which by the way is treated on an out-patient basis, and not isolated.
Fighto!
@ Old Man - Under control? Do you seriously believe the official numbers released by the PRC, notorious for downplaying disasters to prevent domestic unrest? The "Early Estimation of the Epidemic" - conducted in a joint study by medical universities in Scotland, England and the USA - predicts that by Febuary 4 there will be 190, 000 carriers of the virus. 190 THOUSAND.
Furthermore, the countries "most at risk of importing the virus are Taiwan, Thailand , Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan. (See Mark McCrackens link above)
Incredibly small numbers? Under control?
The time was last week to turn back all arrivals from China, and mandatorily quarantine those who got in. Starting now may at least minimize the extreme risk ahead.
Madverts
If the Chinese government seem to be being truthful here the problem has got to be much, much worse.
WilliB
It has left China now... there will be a lot more infections.
MSR Japan
Its much more serious than many think, why would you lock down 50 million people for cold symptoms? Ask yourself how serious is this thing?
C'mon no BS seriously use some intellect and critical thinking here please.
There is about 90,000 cases infected as of this morning, lets see what they report tomorrow.
Believe it or not you do not lock down 50 million for a cold ! That is the red screaming alarm warning to you pffft its a mere cold thinkers.
Jimizo
Link, please. You said you read this in the news.
Jimizo
Cobber, your childish trolling on tennis articles is one thing, but on serious issues you should approach things with a bit more maturity.
I don’t know why you do this.
Yrral
This virus is entering human by people coming in contact and consuming wild animals, then it been spread from humans to humans
rcch
... people saying there,s already 90,000 cases of infection (sensationalism) . . . seriously relax folks, we got this. ( it,s not gonna be long until the whole thing is contained but until then better be careful and take precautions ) . . .
Jimizo
I just want the link to the news story the poster claimed to have read.
I have friends and coworkers in China. I am genuinely concerned. Childish trolls and people not posting links to things they claimed to have read is very annoying.
rcch
@Jimizo
apparently it,s a Chinese nurse claiming that the real number is 90,000... i read that in the Daily Mail ... but there,s no proof or confirmation... i understand your concern... let,s hope for the best.
theFu
Are the people who recover immune or can they become re-infected?
If they are immune, you have a few more people who should work caring for the other sick people.
Robotron
It's a voice recording of supposedly a nurse from a private conversation that the person decided to upload. It can be found reuploaded on YouTube under the profile Mastrangerma.
Chip Star
The government also reported five cases in Hong Kong, two in Macao and three in Taiwan.
Taiwan is not China.
MSR Japan
Please look around the info is on the net, there are videos too. Some one even mentioned Daily Mail !

Jimizo -
here is a link and I hope this now ends your doubt , but note this news is from TODAY not yesterday when I posted -
https://7news.com.au/news/health/expert-says-coronavirus-spreads-before-symptoms-show-as-whistleblower-claims-90000-affected-in-china-c-666302?fbclid=IwAR3n7_ib4-B6hoXSO1qx8Y4ZHQg5GX0iV1SOSdAOzb_JyTUq2Nj5_lJGOTE
Jimizo
A supposed voice recording from a nurse, eh? Great source.
I’ll take it under advisement.
The Daily Mail is a trash rightwing tabloid. It is notorious for fake news. Read something decent.
rcch
Jimizo ... wanna know something funny? (about the 90,000 infected) i already knew it was fake even before i checked it online (because you asked) (happened to be the Daily Mail, could,be been something else). the fact that you believed it, i accept if you have some lack of experience in reading the news or if it,s your concern blinding you, but what i don,t understand is why you,ve been asking here all day (from morning until the end of the day) for links, all worried about your friends and you didn,t took 1 minute of your time to find it online (which is super easy). interesting huh. not 90,000. it,s serious though, we have to agree on that. but it,s also not the end of the world.
