Good move .
Need more co operation...not the zero sum game currently upon us globally
Ricky Kaminski13
I have been waiting all week for any news on China, especially considering the reports of inner turmoil and leadership jostling that have been happening in real time for a good fortnight or so now within the higher ranks of the CCP. There have been some bombshell happenings and signs that one of the greatest threats to global security and regional stability, communist China, is going through a radical transition period, and that Xi Jinping is said to be in a life-or-death power struggle. It's sort of big news, wouldn't you think? That's why I note the relative media silence. Credible reports from serious China watchers suggest that Xi Jinping's fate may already even be sealed. The murky nature of the CCP doesn't help, but if you have taken an interest and are following the daily updates and power shifts, it looks like something huge has just happened.
This business-as-usual article about China's rising influence that sees Wang playing his role for the cameras and acting like nothing is happening (for the comprimised western media?) is fascinating.
If I am wrong, apologies to the editor and I will gladly eat my words, but there seems to be some serious time lagging going on right now. Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? Any netizens care to enlighten us? Not trolling whatsoever, just can't understand why it's not in the print media.
TaiwanIsNotChina
How about conforming to the SCS arbitration ruling? That doesn't require any mediation at all. Also how about not looking the other way as Ukraine is assaulted? No yuan in that I guess.
TaiwanIsNotChina
I guess it is fitting that this is located in Hong Kong so they can all take lessons in how to mediate dissidents into prison cells.
max-velocity
Hong Kong released a number of protesters from prison today.
Fighto!
A ragtag cohort of banana republics, crooked tyrants and "strongmen" pictured.
"Chinese wisdom"...and brown-paper bags.

With no doubt the ccp having final say and absolute control over these "dozens of countries".

This is a test Script for a new Asian Comedy Program; Yes ?
…based on multiple Countries / Characters Political Affiliations?
Should be an interesting one
WA4TKG
Does this “Chinese Wisdom” come into play in the SE Okinawa Prefectural Waters ?
Say around Miyako Island and anywhere chinese helicopters and “Coast Guard” ships are harassing marine traffic (this includes ANYWHERE in the Pacific Region)

Totally ridiculous to think that China could be trusted on anything related to the law. Other than authoritarian nations, those taking part are likely just paying lip service to the CCP.
This would be the same HK where the CCP destroyed the rule of law to such an extent that the once-admired foreign judges have mostly left? The one where the courts are controlled by the CCP?
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c722094n135o
And the same HK where the CCP refuses to uphold its own legal obligations in the Sino-British Joint Declaration?
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/foreign-secretary-statement-on-radical-changes-to-hong-kongs-electoral-system
Hell-holes like Pakistan, Belarus, and Cuba may choose the lawless dystopia that is China, but anyone else needing dispute resolution in Asia will continue to use reputable jurisdictions like Singapore or Tokyo.

Shrewd move by Beijing as the multipolar world takes shape.
No more Heads I win, tails you lose hypocrisy from the self-declared our 'rules-based-order'.
RichardPearce
The problem with the existing international institutions that have grown into farces is that the White Bloc states have either exempted themselves from their jurisdiction while making themselves the major influence on their composition or simply refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of rulings against them for so long the notion of the rulings having any real effect disappears.
Is it possible that the ones China is helping the majority of the world create for themselves will be perverted the same way? Yes. But the likelihood is much smaller.
JJE
The location couldn't be more appropriate for a body that espouses mediation.
Hong Kong's return to its motherland itself stands as an undeniable positive example of peacefully resolving international disputes. The runaway success of the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework, the unique legal system and bilingual environment as a global gateway and international business hub all make HK an ideal jurisdiction for this new global body.
Ricky Kaminski13
Just wow. Did you perhaps ask how the Hong Kongers feel or did you also decide this yourself?
Quite remarkable times we are living in. Am hooked, line and sinkered!
JJE
Yes. Did you? Or did you just assume the default setting?
KnightsOfCydonia
Hong Kong is a fitting place for this rising cabal of despots. An island that has lost it's freedoms and imprisons those that dare speak out against the new masters.
Ricky Kaminski13
Authoritarians promising a one country two systems deal, breaking that promise, then going about creating a system they claim to be one of stability by crushing dissent. You’ll have to forgive me if I’m not buying it.
By this logic the most stable country in the world could be North Korea. No dissent there, everyone very happy.
JJE
Safe bet that is an academic no then.
Straw man arguments about NK nor distorting the fact HK was never a democracy under colonial administration attest to that. Forgiven.
Ricky Kaminski13
Ah the grievance based mindset. Hong never was a democracy. Roger that.
We can agree to disagree then. To you guys the new Hong Kong is a victory, to the free world Hong Kong is a tragedy and a reminder to us all of the dangers and perils of communism. Promises mean nothing. But hey, horses for courses right.
No one touched my original question in this thread either, ( actually one guy did but we were immediately moderated ) so the complete ignoring of the simple original query is in itself really an answer. Either way, we are all watching with great interest how this all plays out, and will leave it to the historians to figure out which of the two sides were good faith actors, and which one had the most bitterness in their heart skewing their take on reality.
You have yourself a lovely evening now JJE and thanks JT for letting this one play out. Omoroi!
TokyoLiving
Excellent, China's is leading the way for a new world order..
JJE
And great to see the UN taking an interest in this decent project. Important to note a positive mediation actually requires the relevant parties to be present to make it an observed arbitration. This applies to certain non-mediated UNCLOS non-events too.
KnightsOfCydonia
Actual mediation requires more then just presence but a meaningful willingness to negotiate.
JJE
Yes. And meditation also requires sovereignty of decision, devoid of the string puller, who is cynically using the one being pulled, to achieve one-sided gains.
You see, to give Manila custody of certain shoals, in true arbitration, would require reciprocity and to acknowledge other's inherent sovereignty over the Paracel islands, which are much closer to Hainan. So it's takes two to tango, as they say.
Once again, it's only a lopsided 'arbitration'.
deanzaZZR
30 countries, at a minimum clearly disagreement with your biased assessment.
The future is multipolar and darker skinned. Sayonara racist Trump American and the EU Parliament bureaucratic state.

Here is Ricky's source.
"Two weeks ago China was in grave economic danger! The very high Tariffs I set made it virtually impossible for China to TRADE into the United States marketplace which is, by far, number one in the World. We went, in effect, COLD TURKEY with China, and it was devastating for them. Many factories closed and there was, to put it mildly, "civil unrest." I saw what was happening and didn't like it, for them, not for us. I made a FAST DEAL with China in order to save them from what I thought was going to be a very bad situation." @realDonaldTrump
You can't make this stuff up, folks. More accurately, this guy makes pretty much everything up.
JJE
Interesting the "media silence" mentioned. Seems like China 'controls' the Western media now, to conceal that current secret, or maybe it's a lack of regular bashing that indicates something larger, which has perplexed the alleged academic thought process, in those third-tier places known as the refuge of a safe home on other people's dime.
Precisely why a new mindset is required. A new naturalised one at that.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Yes there are at least 30 dictatorships and grifting countries in the world. China is among them.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Then I am sure refusing to resolve disputes is itself is a violation of UNCLOS.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Just because HK had no army and no strait with which to the resist the PLA doesn't make it a model which will be followed by Free Taiwan.
Sh1mon M4sada
Look at the whose whose of despots rulers linking hands. LOL. They certainly deserve each other.
TaiwanIsNotChina
China's "international institutions" are already based in Peking, showing who is in charge.
Tamarama
Whilst the US is using coercion, intimidation against 'good friends' like Japan, Australia, Canada etc, China is in an international charm offensive.
And just look at how rattled some of the Stars and Striped wavers here are, eh?
Just because your paranoid, don't mean they're not after you!
bass4funk
That was the funniest thing you’ve said yet on this site. Lol.

I'm hopeful this group can do good.
I fear they will just waste time.
Anyone care to list all the Chinese coercion and intimidation from the last 10 yrs? Probably more than these posts allow.
The problem with both China and the US is the same. We have leaders who never want to step down and think authoritarian rule is best. At least for the US, we know with 100% certainty that leader will be gone in 1330 days. For China, who knows?

Yes, this is correct. 100%
*T**otally ridiculous to think that China could be trusted on anything related to the law. Other than authoritarian nations, those taking part are likely just paying lip service to the CCP.*
Not many people, countries trusts USA anymore and so this is actually good.
Pukey2
ricky:
Yeah, like the number of times I've heard Xi or Putin get cancer or is about to die, blah blah, blah. More theatrics and kabuki theater from the western mainstream media. Wishful thinking.
Ricky Kaminski13
Pukey2 finally someone chimes in. Very dismissive, zero surprises there, but better than nothing! Not wishful thinking from this end though, as the guy rumored to take the throne if the rumors and whispers are true, Zhang Youxia ( heard of him? ) may be even more dangerous to regional security that Xi. Either you guys are just completely avoiding your inner secrets from being exposed and buying some time, or you haven’t a clue what’s going on which would also be a surprise as it’s your country. Not that lying is the norm of course, so which is it exactly?
Where there’s smoke there is always fire Pukey, always.
