This is something you just absolutely cannot protect yourself from.

This isn't the first time that this happened in Seoul. About 10 years ago, 2 people, a man and a woman, were walking along a sidewalk in Seoul when a sinkhole opened up below them. They fell in but luckily they survived.

Sinkhole accidents are rare in South Korea, with fewer than 200 reported cases every year on average -- significantly less than the number recorded in neighboring Japan.

Rare? What is the basis for that assessment I wonder? Also, is this supposed to make the people there feel good? I doubt hearing that is a relief to the people living in the areas affected. South Korea is significantly smaller than Japan so that would be a reason for a lower amount of sinkholes I'd guess. RIP to the deceased. Must have been terrifying.

So this implies that Japan has significantly more than 200 sinkholes recorded per year? Like one per day? Can't say I've noticed the reports.

.

If almost 200 cases (reported) per year is rare

.

I wonder what an uncommon number would be.

.

365 / 200 = 1.825 days average between them.

.

3 or 4 a week.
