If only somebody had warned us 30 years ago. We could have done something.

If only somebody had warned us 30 years ago. We could have done something.

Climate change warnings started 50 years ago.

They had said this 20… 30 years ago and sea levels in a he pacific islands remain the same. The climate agenda is for climate lockdown sequestration and control.

Environment protests started in the mid-1960s.

4mm…..

Why do conservatives dislike people who actually study stuff ?

Is it a religious "having faith is not asking questions" thing or are they actually scared of science ?

Why do conservatives dislike people who actually study stuff ?

More like 4mm is inconsequential.

not even centimeters but milli meters?

100s of billions of dollars to change that to 2mm? No thanks

I find a bit of this but there are intelligent conservatives.

I see it more like there are types that like to be led, and given their intellectual capacity, they need to be led. They have been sold the idea that by following a set of ideas, they are actually intelligent and ‘free thinkers’. It’s a bit cruel.

I wonder how many climate refugees will be forced into the US in the next few decades.

I'm all for mitigating human excess but would anyone miss Florida ?

The problem isn't missing Florida; have you ever seen what happens to the rats when a ship sinks? They all jump on the closest ship...

4 mm SO FAR. Sea levels could rise by multiple meters over a relatively short period of time.

Jesus, how thick does one have to be to have one's head this obtuse regarding science and physics?

Multiple meters? Where would the water come from? Maybe learning basic science first would be a start.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

That's 4mm a year for those who can't read. Just to do the maths for you: that's 40mm in ten years. Anyone who thinks that is inconsequential has never lived near a beach for ten years and seen highest tide in an onshore storm and the damage that does to dunes and littoral forests (To say nothing of the human property). But then, who would expect the free thinkers (dutifully following the propaganda of Big Carbon with their trillion dollar profits for 50 years) to care about anything other than their own selfish selves.

They have been sold the idea that by following a set of ideas, they are actually intelligent and ‘free thinkers’. It’s a bit cruel.

Or as Bertrand Russell once put it:

The fundamental cause of the trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt.

More like 4mm is inconsequential.

The article says "4mm per year". Why does the boiling frog idea come to mind?

Multiple meters? Where would the water come from? Maybe learning basic science first would be a start.

The Ice sheets of Greenland. The Ice currently trapped on the continent of Antarctica.

ANY land-based ice sheet that melts (as Greenland's is doing now at an alarming rate) is going to put more water into the oceans. More water in the same basin is going to cause the water level to rise.

You were saying something about learning basic science?

Science is politicized by those without the cognitive abilities to understand it.

For the rest of us, Science is not political. It's science.

Melting of all ice in the world would not increase sea level by multiple meters. There is not enough water for that to happen.

You were saying something about learning basic science?

Please check how much ice there is estimated to be in the whole world. Then check how big the body of water is and how much is needed to increase global sea level by even 1m.

The climatologists, you know, the experts that actually know this stuff, say that I am right and you are wrong.

So I will go with them.

In addition, there is expansion of the volume of sea water from increased temperature. I've read that 34% of the increase in sea water levels over the last 20 years or so is from thermal expansion.

Many locations with coast erosion from increased sea levels.

I'll just leave this here for the anti-scientific geniuses here.

There's also this:

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/07/climate-change-is-making-some-homes-too-costly-to-insure.html

As climate change threatens the U.S. with more natural disasters, it’s becoming increasingly costly for Americans to insure their homes — and it’s only expected to get worse, according to experts.

Exactly. See coverage of the cabinet minister of Tuvalu a giving Cop26 speech from (wait for it) the sea? That's because where he gave the speech from was above sea level just a few years ago right?

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

You actually believe them ?

Nice to see a new poster on this topic.

Are you educated in climate science?

Read some fraction of the literature on the topic?

It's just that we've had rightwing North American podcast watchers commenting on this. They offer nothing useful whatsoever. They often talk about Bill Gates and stuff like that - stolen elections, scamdemics, proxy wars, EVs a scam etc.

Looking forward to a new perspective.

4mm...

A statement of pure ignorance on the subject.

Not only a rise, but warming of the waters with an increase of volume in the oceans of the world.

It's incredible the amount of stress only humans can cause the world's ecological problems and likely demise, as many people like 4mm don't care, and don't have the wherewithal to study and comprehend what 4mm actually means in the context of damage to the earth.

The hand the feeds, the earth itself, reciprocates from being bit so much, so often, and so carelessly by humans. And the sad thing is, life on earth is already suffering for it, if some would care to open their minds just a wee bit. It's so obvious, one would have to cherry pick it out of their minds to not believe it. Being used to doing such things is detrimental.

That taxpayer dollar would be wisely spent now because you can't live off the concept of money when it has no more human meaning. Billy Zane on the Titanic. That's conservative rich people in a nutshell. Dumb enough to try and pay off a guy who knows he's going to die with no vision of what the future holds.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

How should we make out that the sea level of one particular area of the earth is rising more than the average? Doesn't it also mean the area as a whole is geologically sinking, thus making the sea level rise higher and higher?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The climatologists, you know, the experts that actually know this stuff, say that I am right and you are wrong.

So I will go with them.

I am also going with them too, but just not the same ones as you, obviously. The point is that science should encourage debate and research, and funding opportunities should never be based on whether one conforms to a "consensus" or not. Or the world would still be considered to be flat.

It’s worth drawing a distinction between giants of science and mathematics and the generally useless types who parrot whatever their pathology leads them to believe - seeing climate change as a hoax is inevitable if your mind is wired that way.

I’ve come across types who see themselves as modern-day Galileos.

I think some would be better advised to study what Galileo’s contribution was and just how intelligent this man was.

A better use of their time. Might give some better perspective.
