But you can't start counting the mail in ballots before election day. Also you can't assume the that the election date is the same as the postmark date.

But you can't heckin start counting the mail in ballots before election day. Also you can't heckin assume the that the election date is the same as the postmark date.

Before online voting started we were able to find out the same day except in the 2000 election between Bush and Gore.

“They have to be decided by 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock on Tuesday night," Trump said. "Bunch of crooked people. These are crooked people.”

Trump gaslighting voters again. He knows that it takes time to count the votes.

Do think it will be faster than 2020, with so many Covid votes.

But expect a “quite frankly, we did win” speech and other election denial from Trump.

That guy is a sore loser.

Before online voting started we were able to find out the same day except in the 2000 election between Bush and Gore.

And if the 'stop the count' had been in effect then Gore would have been president, maybe no Iraq Invasion.

“They have to be decided by 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock on Tuesday night," Trump said. "Bunch of crooked people. These are crooked people.”

It was not clear who he was targeting with the “crooked people” remark.

'Trump wants..' . 'Who is he targeting'

It is a psychological tactic of authoritarians to make the focus on reading their whims and gnomic phrases and leaving the burden on others to interpret them and wait out the consequences.

Trump has been projecting his authoritarian ambitions from the getgo.

And moving past dimpled chads and sending 90 year old grandmas to the polling station is a positive.

Before online voting started

There is no online voting in federal elections. What are you talking about?

9 ( +14 / -5 )

Michael Flynn, suggested during a recent interview on the right-wing American Truth Project podcast that violence could erupt in states still counting ballots the day after Election Day because people “are just not going to put up with it.”

Just imagine. This nut job fascist will be part of a Trump administration.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

Let's be accurate here: Trump demands that he be declared winner on election night.

3 ( +11 / -8 )

And if the 'stop the count' had been in effect then Gore would have been president, maybe no Iraq Invasion.

So you’re basically saying if I am hearing this correctly, the election was stolen?.

'Trump wants..' . 'Who is he targeting'

Now what?

It is a psychological tactic of authoritarians to make the focus on reading their whims and gnomic phrases and leaving the burden on others to interpret them and wait out the consequences.

Now I know why Pelosi is in a panick, makes sense

Trump has been projecting his authoritarian ambitions from the getgo.

Translation: Dems don’t want Trump to do what they’ve been doing. Deep breathes

And moving past dimpled chads and sending 90 year old grandmas to the polling station is a positive.

But Dems helping elderly fill out ballots in other words trusting them to help fill out ballots and handing them in is a positive thing

-17 ( +7 / -24 )

Former President Donald Trump is stepping up his demands that the winner of the presidential race be declared shortly after polls close Tuesday, well before all the votes are counted.

Come on, even our MAGA-friends here have to admit this is all "Dictator 101" stuff...

And how many Americans do you want to disenfranchise Mr Trump? One million? Eight million? Fifty million?

You're going to need more than that if you want to cheat yourself back into power....

Over the past two weeks, as Trump's own internal polling show him losing, he's giving us every excuse in the world for going down in flames...

Now he's once again trying to destroy our democracy with him as he self-combusts....

4 ( +10 / -6 )

So, if he demands that the counting be stopped at a certain time and then it transpires that if the result were based on that point in time he would lose, then I assume he'd just demand that the count starts again, wait for a moment which shows him leading, even if by a tiny amount, and then repeat the cycle.

And if the 'stop the count' had been in effect then Gore would have been president, maybe no Iraq Invasion.

It has never been the case that vote counting is stopped before all the votes have been counted. That would be stupid.

Great news!

The Georgia Supreme Court ruled Monday that absentee ballots that were mailed late to voters in Cobb County will only be counted if they arrive back to election officials by Election Day, sparking GOP leadership to take a victory lap!

American Leftiii logic If kamala wins it can be declared on election night. But if Trump wins that should not be declared on election night...

If a comedian .... comedian speaks in the Trump rally anything which is not a narrative for left then that is BIG issue and portray that it was said by Trump...

But the leftieees current president and vice president speak with on mouth any dirty comment then that is just a joke and not a matter to consider

Not too bright to compare the US election to France. No wonder they believe all the stop the steal nonsense if they can’t wrap their heads around such a simple concept.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Trump is free to declare victory at any time. Declare victory now if he wants.

The resilts will not be known nor declared on the night. Many of the races will be close enough to warrant a recount - which will take several days at least.

But Trumps supporters do not care for reality nor due process. My money is on them getting violent yet again and shaming that country.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

And if the 'stop the count' had been in effect then Gore would have been president, maybe no Iraq Invasion.

So you’re basically saying if I am hearing this correctly, the election was stolen?.

MAGA reading comprehension...

In your example, and in what Trump is proposing, by the election night vote count Gore would have won the election.

In the real world Gore conceded after the vote count was stopped by a Supreme Court decision, he conceded, attended Bush's inauguration and the rest is history.

No Seattle riot WTO anarchist/Marxist mob storming the Capitol.

Therein lies the difference.

Have you been educated?

The Dems as well.

The resilts will not be known nor declared on the night. Many of the races will be close enough to warrant a recount - which will take several days at least.

Or whoever reaches 270 or too close then you can somewhat make a prediction, anyhow, it’s going to be hard for any serious irregularities to take place because unlike last time the GOP have almost equal to the Dem poll watchers at every site to ensure the count is fair

But Trumps supporters do not care for reality nor due process.

You mean, the Dems, they are the ones that devised this system and demand that we rely on it, yeah, don’t go there, we did fine for centuries with paper ballots, but now if we don’t have them electronically counted it’s impossible to know? You kidding me???

My money is on them getting violent yet again and shaming that country.

I feel the same about the Dems should Trump win, my money is on that.

Yes it should be counted non stop until it is done and a winner announced.

because every ballot should be available to be counted on election DAY.

-16 ( +3 / -19 )

But does this also apply to federal elections?

all registered voters are doing is returning their ballot by fax, email or an online portal to upload it, depending on the state.

the ballot is tracked and verified like any other ballot, since it’s the same form.

As expected, and has been alluded to in previous posts, the MAGA-spin machine is overloading...

Is there any more damning example of a MAGA-cult than when the leader says "stop counting votes and declare me the winner"....that's George Orwell 1984 stuff...

The US is a democracy founded upon the principles in the Constitution - and this wanna-be dictator wants to violate all of them...

And those that refuse to see that because of their blind devotion are just as guilty as he is...

10 ( +12 / -2 )

all the votes arrive on election day, you sit down from 7pm and count them to completion, report the totals that night/early morning and announce a winner,

And in some states even the ballots that arrived before election day can’t start being counted — by law — until election day. Pennsylvania is one of those states, so their actual results will come in slowly.

But despite the clear nature of the laws, you think disenfranchising voters who follow the letter of the law is a good thing?

"I WON BIGLY - I'm here to announce I have won this election by a 500 million votes! I don't care if there is only 350 million people in the US - it just shows even the unborn vote for me! So I want to thank all those unwashed, basement-dwelling, fat pigs - my great supporters - they're so stupid and easily suckered. Now on to more orange greatness - first thing we do is implement Project 2025 - then tax cuts for the super-rich and screw the rest! And open the border more - I need more maids and groundskeepers"...

11 ( +12 / -1 )

Why is the GOP so afraid of voters voting?

all eligible voters knew from years ago what day election day was and could plan accordingly. By mailing their ballot so it was received prior to or on election day.

or by voting…(gasp!) in person. All this absentee voting by people who are not absent is opening up for fraud and distrust.

-15 ( +2 / -17 )

Nothing wrong with this. In Australia the votes are hand-counted with scrutineers from the parties watching over the count, and in almost without exception the results are known on the same night. No reason why the same can't happen in the US. It'll also minimise the chances of shenanigans in the following days like what happened last time.

Where did that come from? The state election laws, of course. And in many states they allow the counting of votes up until three or four days after election day.

So the voters have planned accordingly, following the laws of their respective state.

There are several reasons why the same can’t happen in the US.

The article gives some but I’ll give you two very good ones to get you started.

Firstly the number of voters on the US is about 10 times that of Australia. Secondly the US decentralized system means votes need to be counted in many thousands of separate districts each with their own particular laws.

So what? In Australia the votes are all counted at individual polling stations in the same way, and the results are passed on to each central station for the district in question. I have experience here both as polling station staff counting votes at a couple off state and national elections, and at other times acting as a scrutineer for a party. Sure, the US has a lot more districts to count, but the population of each district in the US is not dissimilar to that in Australia. Postal votes may arrive later than the in-person votes, and they are counted, but very rarely will they be in numbers large enough to influence the result in any given district, and have basically zero influence on the overall result.

So your "argument" holds no water.

Yes. To add to this, Bernie Sanders even called this before the elections. Trump is lying like usual and his silly supporters are just regurgitating those lies.

Sanders said he is worried about what some Democratic strategists have called a “red mirage”: The appearance of a Trump lead on the night of the election in some battleground states, even if he lost, due to the fact that Republicans are more likely to vote in person, whereas many Democrats are planning to vote using mail ballots, which will take longer to count

She can't riff off script if her teleprompter gets stuck. She can't secure delegates from her own party and gets railroaded into her position as the DEI hire. She has a disgraceful record as AG in California. She patronises her supporters with lame celebrity endorsements. She steals her opponent's good policies and disowns her own performance as VP.

Let's indulge you for a moment and assume that even half of what you said is true: then why is she quite definitely in the running to win the election?

45 lost against Biden and will lose again against Harris. That’s how bad he is.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

Indeed. I prefer candidates who don't emulate sex acts with microphones.

I prefer candidates who know how tariffs work.

You prefer anybody but Trump. We have known this since you joined JT and talk about him several times daily here. Now please break down something about Kamala. I haven't heard anything yet.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

They don't do too bad a job when it comes to Japanese news, but anything from overseas has an obvious leftward slant to it. Honest left-wingers should be able to see that without any difficulty at all.

No, can that repeated nonsense.

The MAGA Overton Window is so warped the 'centrist' neo-liberal consensus mass media you interpret as 'left' while your preferred outlets give you the same policies with some anti-immigrant, anti-trans slant and you see that as the alternative.

Delusion.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

Yes. He's garbage, just like his Maga movement is. Whine moar.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Midnight in what time zone? At midnight Eastern Standard Time the polls are still open in Hawaii and half of Alaska.

5 ( +10 / -5 )

JT is doing fine with the articles published. Some people just love a good moan.

It is fine if YOU agree with it. 2 days ago they actually printed a non-biased article. It isn't that hard.

a couple off state and national elections, and at other times acting as a scrutineer for a party. Sure, the US has a lot more districts to count, but the population of each district in the US is not dissimilar to that in Australia.

Risible nonsense. The population of southern California, not the whole state but just the seven counties that make up Southern California, is greater than all of Australia.

According to the AEC website "Australia’s much-admired, manual system of federal elections has one of the most complex and time-consuming counting operations in the world. While it can at times require patience, the federal election counting process delivers integrity to the results, concentrating on accuracy in a highly transparent manner."

Now watch this video from the AEC and tell me if someone is blowing smoke. Note that the narrator states very clearly a mere 9 seconds into the video that "the AEC never has and probably never will declare a result on election night"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjnIz0eCjkA&t=28s

Per the video results takes days or weeks to declare.

Hoping when the election is over we can go back to Japan Today and less US articles.

There are many Japan articles and this is in the "World" section. I don't understand your issue.

Your candidate has absolutely nothing to offer the country.

She built a reputation as a prosecutor putting people like Jupiter in jail for sex abuse/rape offenses. She took victims other prosecutors were afraid to try to defend because the victims were themselves so badly flawed they were afraid to present their cases to a jury fearing they would lose. Kamala Harris took those cases and won them. In the course of one case where a girl sent to a lock down facility escaped and was sexually abused, she figured out the leaders of the lock down facility were pimping some of the girls out. She put the leaders in jail too.

I'm not fully familiar with the whole US election process - what happens if it is officially called for Harris, but Trump refuses to concede? Does the presidency reside in a sort of "Schrodinger's Presidency" state until Trump either gives up and concedes, or manages to convince his Supreme Court buddies to give him the win?

I looked this up and it suggests that a concession call / announcement is not actually a legal matter, just one of tradition, so I assume that if Trump refuses, Harris will just move into the White House regardless, but I wonder what kind of shenanigans could go on until it's made official?

As someone who has first-hand experience of it, yes the Australian system it is cumbersome, but it does work. The House of Representatives seats are almost always counted on election night, and the seats can be called on the night. Occasionally recounts are needed when there are razor-thin margins but they aren't common. The Senate takes much longer to count due to the complex nature of proportional representation, but because the House of Reps determines who governs, this is less important. So that's what the AEC means when they formally declare the election. It's Senate counting that delays the official declaration. They may not formally declare the election straight away, but everyone knows what the results are and 9/10 times, governments and oppositions both know by the morning after the election who will be governing from then on based on the number of seats won and lost.

Maybe she should've stuck with prosecution instead of jumping into political waters way out of her depth. There hasn't been one moment during this campaign where she's convincingly demonstrated why she should be president.

There is zero sense in attempting to draw similarities between two completely different election systems in two completely different countries.

I like your "women, know your place" vibe. I can see why you lean towards the republican POV.

I love the Onion, one of the US' great satirical publications. They just came up with a corker:

"Georgia officials remind voters to bring 2 forms of weapon to intimidate election workers".

Harris ain’t perfect but she ain’t the other guy.

Thank God that people realize it, no wonder CNN is turning on her. Even they see what a disaster this woman is

45 lost against Biden and will lose again against Harris.

How? She will magically change the polls to her favor?

That’s how bad he is.

Desperation is the Dems name

It is more about the fact Harris has been a mediocre VP at best. Nice enough lady, just not presidential material.

We’ll see if the people agree with you… or not…

She did get the better of Trump in the debate. Looked more poised and in control of the facts and her temper.

He threw his toys out the pram and started gibbering about eating cats and dogs.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

How? She will magically change the polls to her favor?

Nate Silver, your polling champion, has decanted the election ‘a toss up’ giving 45 a 50.4% chance to win.

Explain.

What are Harris's flaws?

What are Harris's flaws?

Why not include the eating cats and dogs bit? Strange.

Anyway - Harris:

Not a great speaker - waffles a lot.

Not great thinking on her feet - can be slow with a retort.

Wooden - not a natural performer.

Looks nervous at times.

The main positives I’d give her in a choice between the two are what she isn’t:

Senile and in clear mental and physical decline.

A pathological liar.

A conspiracy theorist.

A convicted felon.

Hardly a ringing endorsement but that’s how I see it.

burgers and beer wrote: Our experts said Harris is leading by "11 million plus abortion". Apparently it will be Harris landslide, so it should all be clear within a few hours of polls closing.

This is true. Kamala will win in a landslide. Good call.

If she is so much more poised and in control and he is an unhinged fascist dictator why are the polls supposedly so tight?

Who called Trump an unhinged fascist dictator?

I didn’t.

I see him as a grifter and a conman with no principles. He’s quite good at it though. A lifetime of practice. Check his CV. Littered with scans.

Meaningless MAGAism from a throwaway shill but let me just put one last thing out there that made me not regret throwing my vote to Kamala. From an independent.

Seeing her sit down with Aday Barkan, a health care activist and have a heart to heart talk.

Compare that to Trump and his never ending concepts of health care plans and mocking of the differently abled.

Easily manipulated, under-educated, fascist-leaning, cultists...

They're actually not. Just like your call, she's winning by a landslide.

There is no online voting in federal elections. What are you talking about?

In a nutshell, as to why this woman is still working in politics is a mind-boggler. Oh, I remember her, she’s the weird one that tried to throw Trump off the ballot, but then puts the password of thousands online

https://x.com/amuse/status/1851785699424399592?s=46&t=YGWP_lcRZjddiWlx4QxURQ

So, as usual, no response to a simple yes/no question that even a child could answer.

I checked out the link. In a nutshell, nothing at all to do with online *voting,” in either state or federal elections. Nothing. At. All.

So then the deflection to “why this woman is still working in politics…”

No connection to the original allegation:

”Before online voting started…”

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Ha! Just as expected. The deranged orange clown wants the winner (himself) declared before all the ballots have been counted. As usual he doesn't give a damn whether something is legal or illegal, This is going to be a fun election year. At least until some MAGA zombies resort to violence, National Guard already on standby in Washington State.

Those are within the margin of error, horrible for Kamala, no wonder they hired so many lawyers.

I'm always willing to knock my home country (UK), but looking at this mess, it does make me a bit proud to see how smoothly our elections go and that we've never had a Prime Minister or leader of the opposition so unhinged that they would try and stop the fair results of an election being decided and recognised by all the parties involved.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

They have to be decided by 9 o’clock, 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock on Tuesday night," Trump said. "Bunch of crooked people. These are crooked people.”

This from the man that ordered officials to "find me more votes" well after the election had been counted and called. Trump simply wants everything his own way, legal or not.

Basically Trump is full o crap! Keep him out of the white house and put him in the jailhouse where he belongs.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

According to American election rules the popular vote does not elect the president. Trump will once again lose the popular vote. Just like he did twice previously. The EC decides on the winner and does not meet until sometime in December.

No doubt none of that will stop Trump from declaring himself the winner and any other result a fraud. Already fraud cases are being prepared to file with the courts.

In 2020, Trump filed more than 200 cases and every single one was ditched by the courts for the lack of evidence.
