Yup. Trump tries to say it is Biden's economy, but it was the threat of tariffs that caused this historic slump in the economy.
And he Trump continues on with this tariff nonsense, it will only get worse.
plasticmonkey
When Jimmy Carter gave his famous speech about the need for Americans to stop expecting that the world is their oyster, he was making a point about sustainability. Trump is just telling the common people to suck it up for the sake of his idiotic tariffs. He simply doesn’t care about people.
plasticmonkey
I defy anyone to cite an economist who thinks this is true.
Bobby Franks
But not the Trump kids.
Trump, his family, and their associates have made out like bandits financially during the current economic downturn.

Yeah, they may only have two sets of clothes and one meal a day. Thanks, Trump.

30 toys down to 2 is over 90 percent reduction. The new Barbie comes with a letter of termination and cardboard box for clearing out her desk?

Donald Trump presidency administration, must find the humility to compromise.
The supply chain globalised economy cannot be simply switched off.
Collecting political global adversaries, a growing number trusted allies is counter productive
Once carefully crafted diplomacy logic reasoning, is in danger of giving way to blustering bullish populistic "ra ra" rhetoric.
It is only through calm trade negotiation can change begin.
The Tariff shock and awe must give way to a level playing field, rules based international order/treaty over an agreed managed time frame.
MarkX
It is just unbelievable a US sitting president would tell his own people that they have to do with less, just because of his stupidity and vanity. If a Democratic president ever said that, it would be like the end of the world for republicans!
wallace
The 10 grandchildren of Trump will have no problems buying their dolls. No reductions there. Maybe they can donate some.
plasticmonkey
For one, Trump is offering VIP tours of the White House to the top 25 holders of his meme coin. The value has gone up as schmucks scramble for the big chance.
That’s basically selling access to the president.
Blatantly unethical and illegal.
While telling the little people to put up with some “turbulence”.
JboneInTheZone
You’re right, it’s going to be short term hardship. The only part he left is that it’s also going to be long term hardship. We’ve already seen the effects of the tariff policy on the stock market. It won’t be long until it starts negatively effecting the economy

Tax cuts aren’t going to make up for the loss in jobs and market losses as a result of the tariffs.
They’re both still below what they were on liberation day lol
wallace
Any tax cuts will not cover job losses and price increases. The GDP decreased 0.3% for the first three months, mostly because of an increase in imports by companies trying to beat Trump's tariffs. Experts are predicting a recession later in the year.
Bob Fosse
“we have to get rid of the Biden ‘Overhang.’”
He’ll still be blaming Biden years from now. maga can’t look at the present, always blaming the past and dealing in fantasy hypotheticals.
Economy shrunk since 47 took over. Fact.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has dropped 6.8% since Inauguration Day on Jan. 20. It was the worst start to a presidency for the index since the start of Richard Nixon's second term in 1973, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
The S&P 500 is down 7.3% in that period and also had its worst first 100 days since Nixon's second term.

Billionaires like Trump and the 13 in his cabinet will have zero problems with tariffs, and come birthdays and Christmas, their kids and grandkids will still get their gifts, Chinese-made or not.
bass4funk
No deflections, straight like an arrow to the point.
But he hasn’t and the Dems every time when asked to prove it, they clam up, but back to China, they are hurting and the tariffs are doing what they were intended to do and that is enraging China, putting a dent in their economy and making them come to the table for negotiations.
YouTube? Why not quote Rolling Stone?
bass4funk
Not just them, most people won’t have problems this year.
ian
Lol who said that. Hahahaha
quercetum
Im not sure anybody in the US of A or China takes this seriously. No one believes in this type of cheerleading. Just sit back and watch. No phone calls. If it goes down, it’s on Biden. Trump has covered his bases.

Relax. The price of Japanese dolls will be alright.

Nearly 90% of Americans expect tariffs to raise prices, Gallup poll finds. Trump's approval rating of 20% for his first hundred days is the lowest in 80 years. Trump gets an F.

Trump claimed it was his market at the end of Biden’s term as a result of anticipation for his next term. So are you saying that it went from being Trump’s market to now not being Trump’s market again?
Blacklabel
im not saying anything. Signified by a question mark:
“is it Trump’s market?”
Bob Fosse
Lutnick went to a chip factory in Arizona that was started under Biden and tried to pass it off as a result of tariffs. These people are liars.

Not being able to answer a simple question is a classic sign of knowing that you’ve been cornered. At any rate I’ll accept your concession

Trade wars always bring up who’s winning or losing by idiots who believe in them, but fact is, both sides lose.
Blaming Biden? Who’s falling for that joke? Oh, right. MAGA. It’s the tariffs, dummy.
Blacklabel
There we go! Good job. No take backs when the record high under Trump gets exceeded again.
although Trump wasnt even President for whole Q1 for GDP as we know, I would say his tariffs caused that neg GDP- so fair enough.
Bob Fosse
Yes. It’s also his fault it’s going down the pan. You’ll still be blaming Biden when it gets worse, everybody knows it.
TorafusuTorasan
If you follow the unwritten rules that everyone knows, take backs are allowed by reciting Ollie-ollie-oxen-free. Yes or no?

American dream's not buying cheap trinkets and toys from China. US re-shoring manufacturing and supply chains in order to build US and global economic resiliency
Outsourcing's too expensive, risky and slow and today's tech. innovation requires that companies manufacture, just ask Elon Musk!
Building a larger global supply chain and manufacturing capacity in US and elsewhere will reduce prices and increase global economic growth potential.
Blacklabel
2 consecutive quarters of negative GDP is or is not a recession?
Let’s get that out of the way too, as it wasn’t called recession under Biden.
So I assume under Trump it would be a “recession” as I already see liberal media pushing that after only 100 days.
Underworld
HopeSpringsEternal
There is no US re-shoring manufacturing and supply chains. That will never happen and Trump has made no effort to even facilitate that.
Why would some business decide to build a manufacturing plant in the US when, on a whiim, Trump could just change tariffs yet again.
Nope. It will never happen and it certainly wouldn't reduce prices.
wallace
Trump wants to bring Barbie home to America.
‘Less than 40%’ of Mattel toys to be produced in China in 2025, as trade war concerns grow.

Trump's Economic policy changes are huge and will take time to play out. Trade negotiations with countries and passing the One Big Beautiful Reconciliation Bill will be the $largest legislation in US history.
Getting both done soon, along with much needed Peace in Ukraine and Middle East will provide US markets and economy with much greater certainty an act as a catalyst for spurring the US and Global economy forward.
China's economic agenda, not the Trump Admin's Priority

I remember when Trump took office, and he was benefitting from a booming market from Biden's term, he was fully taking credit for it then. He said this:
“Everyone is calling it the — I don’t want to say this. It’s too braggadocious, but we’ll say it anyway — the Trump effect,” Trump said during a rally in Washington, D.C., on the eve of his inauguration. “It’s you. You’re the effect. Since the election, the stock market has surged, and small-business optimism has soared, a record 41 points to a 39-year high.”
Now, since he placed tariffs on all countries, he blames Biden for the effects? I'm not surprised at all. Trump will always take credit for good things that happen, even if he was not responsible for it, but place blame on others, when he was the cause of the problems.
Ken
Doesn't the blame game get old? The first month was spent firing people hired previously by Biden to be replaced with Trump YesMen and un-doing everything Biden did. Anything that happened February onwards is on Trump
HopeSpringsEternal
Turns out China and the Outsourcing Globalists are NOT going to control global manufacturing and supply chains. for strategic areas of the economy, not including toys.
Record $operating investments being announced in US, due to Trump's trade and economic policies that will drive US job creation, productivity, new company formation, wealth creation, tax revenues & National Security!

Trump's wealth more than doubles
https://www.yahoo.com/news/trumps-wealth-more-doubles-forbes-163047659.html
Trump's crypto project took off after his Nov. 5 election, Alexander's article said, when more investors took the crypto plunge, "spurred by a whiff of deregulation and $75 million of purchases from crypto hypester Justin Sun." The result was a windfall for Trump estimated at $390 million, "or roughly $245 million after tax," Alexander wrote.
Here's a summary of the president's estimated net worth, as published in the Forbes world's billionaires lists, beginning In 2015, when it was $4.1 billion. In 2016, it was $4.5 billion; in 2017, $3.5 billion; in 2018 and 2019, $3.1 billion; in 2020, $2.1 billion; in 2021, $2.4 billion; in 2022, $3 billion; in 2023, $2.5 billion; in 2024, $2.3 billion; and in 2025, $5.1 billion.

Trump might actually be good for the environment in his second term. Maybe he has decided to make the climate great again? Less money = Less consumerism, less traveling and less food. Many more people will be on the bread line so they will not be able to damage the environment as much. Brilliance by Trump.

US Inflation now at the lowest level since Trump 1.0, as the Biden inflation nightmare is gradually fading away but prices remain too high as a result.
Big factor's lower energy prices but also reduced US Govt. spending due to DOGE Digital Audit Advisory and Trump's trade agenda that will build out global supply capacity, making markets more efficient with lower prices!
Chabbawanga
Definitely a lot of insider trading going on. Huge spikes in call options volume before Trumps official announcements about pausing tariffs. Absolute reeks. Not even touching on his crypto scam he had going through his inauguration.

Trump has cancelled Christmas for kids. Better buy their toys now while they are still on the shelves.

Trump really should beat up on the PRC given its appalling human rights record and atrocious Covid debacle. Certainly supply chains will suffer but the PRC needs to be cut out of the trade equation.

from the guy that bankrupted two casinos, yeah right.
Also, billionaire family will still be able to buy 30 dolls. trump and friends will not be impacted, only the uneducated that voted, or not, for him.
theFu
Trump was elected by fools who actually believed he cared about anyone other than himself.
Going from 20 to 2-3 dolls is a completely foreign idea to me and mine. Christmas was more about being together and getting a few "presents." Most presents were practical things we needed, not toys or dolls. Often, Mom would work on handcrafted items for months so we'd have an extra present. There wasn't much extra money, but there was love. I worry that Trump may have confused those two things.

"American Dream is not buying cheap stuff from China", quote from current Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Trump was elected to rebuild US economy from inside out by reducing reliance upon China's manufacturing and supply chains, secure fair-trade deals based upon reciprocity, end wars, secure borders, lower inflation etc.

Apple is not investing a single dollar in new US factories for its iPhones or other devices. Even before Trump became a second-term president, Apple had already planned a $500 billion investment in its AL. Nothing to do with Trump.
The UAE will invest $1.4 trillion. Saudi Arabia intends to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years, according to a statement by the Saudi Crown Prince.
That is $2 trillion, not $8 trillion.

Even if you assume all the container traffic at American ports are imports from China, it makes up 1/4 of the container traffic at Chinese ports.
And guess what happens when, instead of sailing between Chinese and American ports, 1/8th of the ships shift to sailing between Chinese ports and nonAmerican ports? The costs of getting containers to those nonAmerican ports drops, while the reliability of getting those containers on a tight schedule goes up.
