Remember that big, beautiful border wall, the one that Mexico was going to pay for? The one that blows down in a strong wind, in the few places that anything got built? Anything Trump says is to attract attention.

Thanks to engineering advances by Israeli engineers, desalination is now a cost effective way to provide water to places that need it. Many lives can be saved by the judicious use of desalinated water.

And what if the deal is concluded before the Big Orange is inaugurated?

As for tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, the US's two largest trading partners, one should notice that the US exports more to those two countries than it imports, so the loser in a tariff war will be the US.

We could get bullet trains built over here, if Big Oil would just tell their GOP puppets to let them get built.

Posted in: Trump's mass deportation plan could end up hurting economic growth See in context

I remember the deportations back in the 1950s. They were just rounding up people with brown skin, so a lot of US citizens ended up getting sent south of the border. It was a real mess.

His deportation plan will go into effect just after he gets Mexico to pay for a wall all along the border. You know, that big, beautiful wall that only he could get built.

Same old GOP game plan; cut taxes on the super wealthy, and balance the budget by cutting services for everyone else.

I remember a conversation I had with a bisexual woman. She said to me that sex with a woman was far better than sex with a man, because another woman knew what she was experiencing. Something to think about.

Posted in: Auto industry's shift toward EVs is expected to go on despite Trump threat to kill tax credits See in context

While sales of EVs and plug in hybrids in the US are not overwhelming, they have neared 25% of new car sales in California, and as California goes, so goes the US, eventually.

If petroleum imports from Canada and Mexico are taxed at 25%, that will be a further incentive to purchase an EV or PHEV. Of course, anything the GOP's orange man says should be taken with a large dose of salt. Remember that big, beautiful wall he was going to build from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, the one Mexico was going to pay for?

I am surprised that no one in these comments has come up with a reasonable explanation for the actions of the police in referring the matter to prosecutors. Surely someone, somewhere, has an inkling of an idea of the rationale of the Japanese judicial system in this matter?

Posted in: Young women preying on older cash-flush men in Japan: How can men fight back? See in context

My problem with the situations described in the article is that the men are unsuspecting dupes. I would have less trouble accepting the relationships if the transactions were above board and honest.

I knew several young, attractive women who let themselves be supported by older men while they were attending university. It enabled the women to avoid going into debt, and they had the company of rich, courteous older men, without any expectation of being together forever. One later became a school teacher, another became a psychiatrist and successful author. They seemed very well adjusted to me. Both came from low income backgrounds, but were very beautiful and very smart. So far as I could tell, no one was hurt.

Of course some women allow themselves to be kept because they don't have job skills, and it is the easiest way for them to support themselves without going on the dole. I try not to judge.

The Olympics should be conducted without influence from politics. They were held in Nazi Germany, Putin's Russia, Xi's China, and Kim's Korea, so let them be held in Saudi Arabia. The benefit may outweigh the detriment.

Posted in: K-drama for mental health? Binge on, one expert says See in context

BTW, there are some really good Japanese TV shows and movies. Just not as many. I find Chinese shows interesting for the view they give me of life in China, but the strict censorship in China is a turn off.

Also, ever notice how Korean shows never touch on the elephants in the room, companies such as Hyundai, Samsung, and LG? There is a recent show about a corrupt mega corporation with a name that begins with "H," which one might choose to equate with Hyundai.

Here's the thing; even as an admitted k-drama fan, I find that most of them are not worth my time to watch. I will start a drama that looks interesting, and then, usually, stop watching because I find it boring. That said, there are a lot of really, really good K-dramas, and those are the ones I try to watch.

My GP and I were discussing k-dramas. She also is a fan. She told me the title of the one she had just finished watching. She said that she knows it is not a heavy watch, and more of an escapist thing for her. I checked out the show she said she had just finished watching, and found it was not to my liking. That said, it still, IMO, had the normal high production values of most k-dramas.

Having been watching Korean dramas since we discovered them in 2009. I have spent many, many happy hours watching them. While most are no big deal, some of them have great production standards.

Posted in: Rising pit bull attacks in Japan put spotlight on negligent owners See in context

I am not an expert, but I agree with the view that this breed was bred for traits that make them inherently dangerous to humans.

A neighbor who lives with her elder mother has a pit bull. She raised it from a puppy to be loving and kind, and I think it gives her a feeling of security. Still, there is a danger involved in the breed that should not be ignored. I suspect my neighbor is in more danger from her pit bull than she is from an intruder.
