Japan has to build up its own military. Not for war, but for balance of power. It's an unfortunate thing but necessary, whether we like it or not. China is and has been growing into a monstrosity of a bully and at this moment with America First mentality blinding Americans to what is happening globally, Japan needs to get into warp speed mode and build its defense capabilites to the max.

The average American cannot sit through 5 minutes of watching a movie in a non-English language.

Perhaps the "average American" could use a good dose of better education so they can appreciate how people (excellent actors often) are giving us all the nuances and emotions of their particular characters in a movie. There are times I watch movies dubbed in English but it is always much better and satisfying in the original language. Always.

It's unworkable. Trump has not thought this one out.

He has not "thought ANYTHING out" as far as I'm concerned. Simply tariff (tax) this group, that industry, those countries, heck.. all countries including our closest friends and put them all in the same basket as our "adversaries". Let's not forget his truly well thought out decisions to cut and tear down the American universities, leaders in research and sciences of all disciplines. I'm not going to mention DOGE because obviously, that one was truly well thought out..wow, so well executed and professionaly managed. Other countries should take note how it should be done. Fire people in all departments, even if they are in the middle of vital work, perhaps even in the middle of cancer research and cures, and just like that...fire them the day of showing up for work and let all their work go to waste. The taxpayers will save so much money..wow!!! Oh, if more people die of cancer, well...we have to be patient. Our great President has a MANDATE to do all this, all in the name of Making America Great Again..but for who exactly, is my question? Putting a tariff on the movie industry..hmm, I think at the same time He should also mandate the film industry not only to make films in Hollywood but also to mandate contents to make sure the material is always highlighting the correct patriotic values of the current administration. America first, screw everyone else. Seems to be the current administrations theme. The film industry will have an absolute field day making movies about this mess...one day.

Posted in: Trump vs Toyota? Why U.S. cars are a rare sight in Japan See in context

As an American who has lived and driven many, many miles in both countries my thought is Japanese cars suit Japan perfectly due to their great dependability. I am still amazed at how simple and trouble-free the maintenance has been on our cars in Japan (Hondas and a Toyota). Also, these cars are designed with certain Japanese road conditions and regulations in mind. Cars need to be able to turn on a dime and be able to maneuvre in tight and limited spaces such as parking garages with ease. Also, cars need to be able to run the AC while sitting in traffic hours on end in extremely hot conditions. American and European cars are finicky when it comes to heat. They don't like it. And this in turn wears out key components in the engine and thus develop more "issues". That said, American cars could sell better with some more effort on behalf of the manufactures focusing on the consumer more and showing more commitment to the market. Toyota and Honda put in lots and lots of years of effort to understand the American consumer. They studies and did their homework. American companies can learn from this.

So some research will be cut. While other research that was previously blocked will finally be supported.

The current admin has uncovered massive amounts of waste and corruption. But of course, we'll never read about this and instead get countless negative stories about Trump, Musk, RFKjr...

You can defend your beloved admistration, that's fine. But shutting down yourself to ANY information other than from your beloved administration means you would be a perfect model citizen if you were to live in Russia, China or North Korea, to name a few. You may think you are a patriot, but based on what country's principles? Not that of The United States, that's for sure. A true American would stand up for what's right and defend the innocent and weak. A true American would stand up to bullies in the name of defending real American values. Do you want to be a slave to your master? We had that in our past and it was a very, very shameful chapter. But we all have been trying to go way beyond that past and learn from mistakes and improve the lives of all. All races and from all walks of life. And, we have been doing darn well in developing treatments and cures for aweful diseases thanks to hard-working and well-funded research. Cancer is a bully. We must stand up and fight it. Our President should know better than weakening our medical know-how and world class research all just to save a buck. Although it SEEMS unbelievably stupid, I refuse to accept the fact that he is stupid. But is he making an unforgivable, GIANT mistake, yes.

Anyone with a drop of decency in their blood. Anyone with a minimal ability of utilizing their brain to do the right thing. Any American, whether Democrat, Republican, Progressive, Far Right or whatever, should see that this kind of reckless disregard for the basics of human development and the search for cures for the diseases which we are all hoping to conquer, is such utterly and amazingly unacceptable decision-making and must not be tolerated. Even if you are MAGA supporters you should know right from wrong. If your leader makes a mistake, and especially when it's so absolutely obvious in this case, please choose to listen to YOUR better side. Speak up. Don't let yourself be misguided all the time. This one will hurt us, all.

Posted in: Why are American cars a tough sell in Japan? See in context

Just read OssanAmerica's comments above. He makes a very good point. Other than the humongous pickup trucks being American makes, most Americans seem to prefer Japanese, German or Korean cars/suv's in general. Ford is relying primarily on its F150 pickup to survive. They mostly gave up producing passenger car models. Chevy and Dodge also rely mainly on their pickup sales for the bulk of their business. Jeep seems to be an exception. I don't believe this is a permanent thing though. As EV's begin to dominate, the Chinese will be prominent and hopefully the US,Europe,Japan and Korea will succeed to innovate and continue to lead this field. The US already showed what it can do buy being ahead with its Tesla. It's a bit unfortunate that the CEO is a bit of a disaster though, but that's beside the point, sorry ;)

Like we as fellow Americans suddenly care who the elected leader of Canada is. lol

Trump is so powerful his mere words and presence determines the leaders of other counties. Amazing!

Wow. It's this false prophet-of-a-leader Trump and supporters such as yourself who are so ignorantly and unashamedly ruining our once globally admired, even reveered nation's reputation, status and furure. I say, "shame on all of you and your fellow so-called patriots". You are supporting the downfall of our country. Do you not see what you're supporting? Read the news. Not only the stuff and source you want to read. Read and think. Think. Don't just blindly follow. Think.

To the good people disagreeing with my posts. Dare I say? Truth hurts. Y'all are following Vladimir's puppet to America's demise. You can be proud, but no other person in the world in their right mind will agree with you. Only the likes of the brainwashed souls in the USSR (Russia now but, not really) and some other beautiful dictatorial nations in our world will.

God Bless America. I hope Mr. Trump wakes up one day and realizes HE needs to change or his country, OUR country, will wake up to something truly unpleasant for all.

Do the people being horribly being misled by Trump not understand that ruining relations and relationships with "healthy, democratic nations" is not only not necessary but absolutely the wrong way of going about it ?!

The US business leaders and our elected officials are the ones who created the "mess" we're in regarding a lack of self-sufficiency in many industries. Punishing others and hurting our own people is childish and reckless. I understand our President is clueless, but the fact that so many Americans follow his lead down the wrong path is beyond words. I try to keep hope alive and pray the future generations only read about this in history "books" rather than be living in the aftermath. My God, sounds like an apocalyptic movie. MAGA fans, beware. It will be on you.

I wanted to comment but upon reading the other comments I just would like to thank the poster Peter14 for his. It's a sad moment in time to be an American. No matter who you voted for, we are all being damaged on so many fronts by this completely inept, careless and reckless man who is willing to sell the soul of America to the devil all while posing as a fighter and savior of Christian values.

The war is coming to an end. The U.S. decides not anyone else.

Perhaps 100% correct in this respect. However, if "peace" is artificially forced onto the victimized nation on the terms of the aggressor then we the "free world" are giving up everything we believe in and are handing over unchecked future powers for aggression to the leaders of nations who are hungry only for one thing, absolute power over everyone at no matter the cost.

The current US administration will give the USA a humongous black eye in the history books and will tarnish their children's futures for a long time to come with this kind of short-sighted thinking. In the name of blindly following your "great leader" you may very well be doing your own, our own country, a monumental disservice. Please try to read and listen to the others' viewpoints rather than always only the ones you "know" are speaking the truth. The citizens of Russia no longer have that freedom. Let's be very careful not to follow in the wrong footsteps.

I can't see the upside for Tesla in doing so.

Agree. However, I am biased at this moment. If I owned a Tesla today, I would get rid of it ASAP. I couldn't with a clear conscience be driving around with Musk's "presence" all around me. Or simply take a chainsaw and finish it off then and there :)

Shame on these "men" called the Taliban. They fear allowing girls from becoming smarter and better than they ever could be. Shameful bunch of "men" not allowing girls to thrive and live without their almighty control. Japan should not support in any way, shape or form these low-lives and scum.

So russia is back in the G8 and the US is soon to be out. Winning everyday under the Trump administration

I am very sad to say, you are 100% correct. All of the US's adversaries are celebrating/laughing/peeing their pants in laughter while the US's concerned citizens and allies around the world are perhaps witnessing before their very eyes the demise of the America we all hoped and dreamed of succeeding in its pursuit of that dream for ALL.

I AM SAD. Although I am an American, I can not with a clear conscience say that I am a proud American at this moment in time. On the contrary. And I can't believe that after fighting, protecting and dying for the freedom for future generations, our predecessors' sacrifices is coming to this. Oh my what a heartbreak.

I truly hope, someday, I will be a PROUD American, again.

Toyota seems to like joint ventures. Maybe Nissan can grovel over that direction for some $$.

Actually, I think Toyota does joint ventures rather cautiously and doesn't seem to make the same HUMONGOUS disasters which Mercedes made with Chrysler or the entire Stelantis debacle. Platform sharing and cost-cutting alone is not what draws and keeps customers to your showrooms. It's trust built on dependable and quality engineering. The resale values of vehicles tells a lot about this point.

Honda would be better off progressing ALONE, Well Done Honda.

101% AGREE!!! Honda would lose many of its loyal customers eventually if they'd become one entity with an inferior company such as Nissan. Sorry Nissan but "cost-cutting" alone is not what customers want, it's quality. However, with EV's being the next "standard" in cars I do believe Honda may need a partner to be more competitive. I hope they find the right match.

Seems like more boxing and WWE fans here wishing to turn ice hockey into a farce. Real athletes are masters of their sport. Athletes who resort to fighting during or after any game are just not respectable athletes. There are other words to describe their behavior and they aren't positive ones. I feel like a few too many American fans prefer fights to break out in any and all sports as a kind of entertainment rather than enjoy the true sport.

Oh and, this mentality seems to have seeped into our politics. Very, very unfortunately.

The thumbs down crowd here proves my point, btw (-_^)

As a kid I was amazed by the wonderful sport of ice hockey. The Montreal Canadiens with Guy LaFleur were just awesome to watch. The best hockey and truly all sport without the ugliness of today's standards. I wish the rules would make players stick to technique and ability rather than primitive body blows and fighting.

I'm glad to hear Honda is thinking to make Nissan a subsidiary rather than merging the two companies. Really glad. If Honda is not in charge of this union then it's better for Honda to not take part. I hope it works out and creates a stronger and more competitive player in the future of automobile production, be it EV, fuel cell or whatever. BYD is forcing all automobile makers to regroup. It's a sign of the times. Maybe a good thing, who knows.

100% agree. Either Honda runs it the "Honda way" or all three will be the next victim of a take-over. Honda must be cautious and smart in how this is carried out.

What a photo of Mr. Ishiba. He seems out of place and lost. Although changing prime ministers too often is not a good thing, I feel Japan should consider changing him out sooner than later. So sad in so many ways. The ones making these decisions to continue until the other gives in are all making humanity look real bad. Shame on those Hamas leaders who acted in such an absolute despicable way at the beginning. Shame on the Israeli leaders for not having the decency to know when to stop killing and to try to bring back their own. And, shame on the leaders of the US for allowing this to go on for so long.
