So why did they loot, attack the California police, why were they throwing scooters, bicycles, Rocks, and anything else they could off the highway over pass at the California/LA police, why loot the stores that have nothing to do with any of this or what Trump is doing.
You make excuses for these criminals just because you don't like Trump.

The supporters of these "protestors" and Media are constantly lying, no other way of putting it.
They say the Republicans etc... are against immigration and that isn't true but hey why bother with facts
They are againsts illegal immigration.
Now I am willing to bet most commenting here that are not Japanese citizens had to go through several legal steps to obtain their visa/PR.
So how would you feel is the guy you are working, living, taking your job, etc... just got off the plane and decided
" hey I think I will just remain here, I will work illegally at below minimum wage and then if they try to deport me I will yell racism"
In the meantime thousands wait patiently and legally to enter and work here.
Well that is the situation in the USA and many other western countries that have immigration.
For every illegal that ends up being permitted to stay one person one family that has gone through the legal process gets their entry and permission delayed.
So what these people want is for people that didn't follow the law to get in and penalise those that are following the law.
But ask yourself this: If they are fine with breaking the immigration laws what does that tell you about their moral character and their respect for the laws of the country?

Fair bet that most Japanese police, like all police, can profile effectively and thus are fairly skilled at determining who's a resident vs. tourist, the exact same way they profile Japanese citizens. That's their job!
Don't become an odds maker.
My daughter is a mixed Japanese citizen from birth her husband is 100% ethnic Japanese both have high level security clearance, she does government contracts he is a government employee high high level security far beyond any beat cop.
She has been stopped on multiple occasions including while with her husband and the cops ask for "proof" of citizenship.
Her husband pulls out his papers and tells the cops to pound sand and my daughter doesn't have to prove anything.
Once the police see his papers they hightail it away from them as fast as they can.
So NO the police are not very good at profiling.
I have actually been stopped in my car with a member of the National Diet and the cops asked him if he was Japanese. Real geniuses!

> Voluntarily speaking to Japanese police without legal counsel greatly increases your risk of being detained and indicted. Their performance is likely evaluated on how many cases they solve. Hence, they will be incentivized to get confessions. These risks begin the moment you agree to engage with police voluntarily, including visits to a koban or being questioned on the street
Again look up the law! Don't give advice that will get people in more trouble.
If as a non citizen you are stopped by the police you are required by laws to present your Zairyu card or passport (if you are not a resident or haven't yet received your Zairyu card).
Refusing or refusing to cooperate is grounds for being detained.
Go to any Embassy website and read what they say and recommend and the warnings they have.

If you are not then you do not have the same rights and protection.
This was confirmed by the supreme Court many years ago!
People have gone to court over this and lost.
Refusing or discrimination against a citizen for skin colour, disability, background, etc...is illegal but the courts have made it clear doing so to non citizen is not protected under the construction or laws.

> Repeated stops by police can get rather annoying.
> I’m white. In my first five years in Japan (early 90s), I was stopped regularly. On one occasion, they told me it was because I was riding my wife’s red bicycle. Guy’s apparently didn’t commonly ride red bikes at that time. Months later, my wife and I were approached by a cop at a station bike-parking area and then detained for several hours at the nearby koban, accused of stealing that red bike — until they ran the registration number and discovered my wife as the rightful owner.
> Why didn't you/your wife register the bike and get a sticker to put on the bike?
> This bicycle theft prevention registraton system (防犯登録)was made Mandatory by law under the "Basic Bicycle Law" (自転車基本法) in April 1993. It was available as an option (not mandatory by law) as early as the late 1980s. Registration can be done at most stores that sell bicycles.
Would it actually make a difference?
Not only did I register all our bicycles, my children and I got stopped so often we carried our official copy of the regulations on us at all times.
So when stopped we not only had the sticker but presented the papers.
Do you think that made any difference? No!
But we all knew what was coming next, search of bags empty pockets, while they supposedly verified the registration despite having the official copy in their hands.
I long ago got rid of my bicycle it was just too much trouble.
My children (now late 20s early 30s) did the same and instead use share ride rentals.
They still get stopped but the excuse if " stolen bicycle registration check" fake reason is now a moot point and the police struggle to come up with a reason.
Being citizens from birth, the two of them nearly always demand why they are being stopped, demand the supervisor come to the location and call their company lawyer. Funny once they say those things, the police suddenly drop the matter and leave without explanation.
Folks, Japan has flaws like every place but is still a great place to live and raise a family, but ignoring the flaws doesn't help, despite being a great place to live some things need improvement and saying that isn't a bad thing.

Apples and oranges!
There is a major difference between investigation/criminal probe and randomly stopping people based on ethnicity for no reason.
Give us the numbers of "pure" ethnic Japanese randomly stopped and the number of mixed ethnic Japanese, naturalised citizens and foreigners randomly stopped, because the above information does not reflect how many are just stopped for no reason and no investigation is involved!

My brother in law's family spent 4 years waiting for permission for their family of 6 to immigrate from Italy to North America.
My sister's friend is sponsoring her brother from India and they have been waiting for just over a year.
Few are complaining about "immigrants" they are saying follow the laws.
I may not care much for Trump but the laws are the laws and for every illegal that ends up getting to stay means that the yearly quota of immigrants reduces or delays another person that has applied legally and is waiting patiently to get in to the country.
Most people I know from the USA and Canada are fine with immigration, most are descendants of immigrants, what they are not OK with is line jumping and that is what illegal immigrants are doing.
Why should the Indian, Filipino, etc.. legal immigrants that are applying and sponsoring family have to wait longer via the legal process because they don't have a land border with north america and require a visa just to board the plane to visit, in the meantime tens of thousands just cross the border without permission and then demand the right to stay?

I was sure this was illegal but apparently there are so many loopholes in the system that this is actually done within the legal parameters of the laws.

Yes it does especially coupled with laws!
You can no long hide these children which was common just a few generations ago.
I went to a school for children with these problems and this was in the 70s and it was crazy the number of others that didn't even attend any sort of education or treatment.
Send the kid someplace, hide him or her away, etc... this was common and it get worse in places where laws are not universal and vary state to state province to province and record keeping was spotty at best!
In my school only one boy was officially diagnosed as "autistic" the rest had multiple other labels and most like myself were not diagnosed as being on the spectrum until early adulthood in the early to mid 80s.
I know it is easier to blame a vaccine than just accept that it is genetics or nature, but the facts are the facts.
If it was just the USA saying there is no connection between vaccines and autism then maybe there would be something to it, but the fact that research from dozens upon dozens of countries all say the same thing, vaccines do not cause autism.
It would need to be one extremely big and insanely organized conspiracy that all the research from countries as different as China, USA, Japan, South Korea, every EU country, a multitude of other Asian countries, south America, etc ... Would all be in a great big conspiracy together!

The anti-vaxers like to put false information out, the parents of these children want to blame someone or something other than their genetics and just plain nature.
Here are the facts. Autism has "increased" only because a better knowledge of it and a better diagnosis.
It is that simple.
Until the 1980s despite the word "autism" having been around a while, most were not diagnosed only the most obvious ones often the classic view.
And in many cases autistic people were wrongly diagnosed as other things like mentally disabled, schizophrenic, etc....
I am in the spectrum as is my daughter, I am too old to have been vaccinated (didn't have them when I was young) my daughter was vaccinated in Japan.
I often hear " there is no family history of autism in our family" yeah sure!?
The reality is it wasn't a well known diagnosis, but even more in the old days families "his" these people the dirty little secret no one in the family talked about, the great uncle place in a care facility, your parent's cousin no one ever met, etc... or as my grandmother would say "well cousin John was "touched" so he stained in his room at grandmother's house".

Russia is never going to take all of Ukraine and realistically it probably doesn't want the western parts as the population would be to difficult to control and Russia most likely wants a buffer zone between it and the west
As for Ukraine winning, not in our lifetime, it isn't holding despite all the wishing in the world.
Russia in now we'll into the Sumi region and has now reached the Dnipro border and this is according to Deepstatemaps a Ukrainian authorized mapping site used by western media.
The more peace talks are delayed the more territory Russia gains, and Zelensky playing the tough guy isn't helping the situation on the ground, Putin is happy the longer Ukraine doesn't agree to negotiate.
It is a no "win" situation on both sides at this point.
Putin needs to fully take Luhansk and Donetsk to save face in Russia as he has already said they are now part of Russia and Ukraine is never going to be able to retake all the territory it has lost.
So in the end a negotiated settlement where Putin doesn't get all of Donetsk and Luhansk and Ukraine retains what it still hold now may be the only real solution at this time.
The alternative is with the far superior manpower Russia has now, it will eventually take the last parts of Luhansk and Donetsk and Putin will declare victory and dig troops in along the borders.

You do realise that there are far more rear end accidents with cars than head on collisions, so should cars now drive in the opposite direction of traffic?
You see where your logic and calculation go wrong?
The reason for most rear end collisions between car and car or cyclist and car or even cyclist and cyclist is because someone (usually the one that is rear-ended) didn't look, didn't signal etc... when changing lanes or going around something in their lane ( like another stoped vehicle).
As I pointed out before, if I am driving in my car in the left lane and a vehicle is stopped and I must go around it, the procedure is to put my turn signal slow down or even stop and wait for a safe moment to merge into the right lane and go around.
Now go out and observe what a cyclist will do.
They will not signal, they will not slow down, they won't even look, they will just zoom around the stopped vehicle without even thinking the cars in the right lane have no idea what the cyclist is planning and boom the cyclist is hit.
This isn't speculation it has been well documented along with not stopping at stop signs and ignoring red lights.
Multiple studies in multiple countries have shown cyclist rule breaking is the number one reason for accidents but the pro- cycling groups are well organized and push their propaganda like the following
While cyclists' rule-breaking contributes significantly to accidents, it's not necessarily the majority of causes. Multiple factors, including road design, driver behavior, and environmental conditions, also play a role
according to the CyclingSavvy website. However, poorly designed bike lanes, distracted drivers, and even weather conditions can also increase the risk of accidents. For example, a sudden door opening into a bike lane, or a driver cutting off a cyclist, can lead to accidents even if the cyclist is following all traffic rules. Therefore, addressing road infrastructure, driver behavior, and environmental factors is crucial for improving cycling safety
The above is pure deflection and has zero facts and the website gives no stats to back up their claims but the police stats from multiple countries always say the same thing, cyclist breaking the rules are more other than not the cause of accidents.

If you look at the stats posted by

You will notice that the vast majority of car vs cyclists happen at intersections.
If you were a gambling person a near sure bet would be to stand on any corner in Japan and bet that the cyclist coming to a stop sign will not stop, not slow down and probably not even look before running through the intersection.
They aren't forced to take risks they just don't follow the law!

Incidentally, it is intersection collisions (出会い頭), undoubtedly vehicles hitting cyclists crossing the street, which comprises the largest group with 30,794 incidents!
It is interesting that you went into detail about the lesser numbers but not the above.
"Intersections" which basically means cyclists crossing intersections and not following the rules, such as not stopping at the stop signs, ignoring red lights crossing in the opposite direction of traffic, etc...
Today I had to see my cardiologist, so a less than 10 minute drive, in that short drive I had to avoid 3 old ladies that crossed the large road ignoring that they had a stop sign (3 different places on the same road) this is a wide road with a lot of traffic they didn't even bother to look.
Then at a major intersection with 5 intersecting roads and a 4 way traffic signal I again had to slam on the breaks because a cyclist in full flashy gear ran a red light going in the opposite direction.
This was just going to the doctor's office the drive home was pretty much the same game of "dodge the cyclist ".
The problem isn't lack of bike lanes or car drivers etc... the problem is cyclist not knowing, not following, not understanding the rules of the road and in many cases simple physics that a multi-ton vehicle cannot stop instantly as the cyclist drat out.
of accidents between cyclists and another “vehicle” (車両相互), 914 were head-on collisions (正面衝突), while 1,107 were rear-end collisions
since those who travel with the flow of traffic are 9.6 times more likely to be involved in an accident with a vehicle while riding a bicycle.
Did you miss a number? Because 1,107 isn't 9.6 times 914!
But yes I can see more cyclists hit from behind and mostly because again they don't know or follow the rules.
How many times have I seen a cyclist just swerve into traffic in order to dart across to the other side, if a car is blocking the lane a car driver must signal their intent to go around and wait for a break in the flow in the other lane, but 99% of cyclists just zoom around the stopped vehicle without signaling or even looking.

This includes several European countries which in general don't permit dual citizenship but have some exceptions example the Netherlands requires those obtaining citizenship to relinquish their previous one, but those born dual can retain both.

These "laws" are already in place. They're just ignored by everyone.
Well yes and no!
If you read the article (including the link with the full article) and if it was better written, the red and blue tickets laws were passed previously but enforcement was to be phased in slowly especially for the blue tickets.
Presently blue tickets are just warnings the plan was to "educate" the public over a few years before starting to issue actual penalties.
The article is pointing out the end of the grace period which is April 2026.
I have seen police giving out blue warning tickets and people don't seem to care, perhaps once that is actually a fine things will change.
We see enough car drivers doing illegal things but far fewer than cyclists one main reason is the high cost of getting a ticket not just financial but losing points and possibly even driving privileges.
So perhaps once the word gets around that cyclists will now get actual penalties we will see fewer cyclists breaking the rules.

OK, take a little trip and spend some time just north of Tokyo Dome on Hakusan Dori.
They have a large sidewalk a separate bike lane in both directions then metered parking, then 2 to 3 lanes for cars in both directions.
This is a big wide road so multiple pedestrian crossings with signals.
What you will see are 50% of cyclists going against the flow in the bike lanes forcing other cyclists on to the sidewalk or into traffic, you will see 90% of cyclists ignoring the red light and plowing through the pedestrian crossings and often even major intersections I have personally observed several bicycle vs pedestrian accidents all due to cyclists ignoring stop signs and red lights.
So even though the city did every effort to create what one of the safest bike lanes around, cyclists just cannot seem to follow the rules and it isn't just old people doing these things a good portion are Japanese and foreigners in full cycling gear on fancy bikes they are the worse they will not stop unless they are really forced to, they zigzag through traffic, they barrel through red lights especially pedestrian crossings but they are also the first to get upset and even violent when a car gets to close to them, funny how that works!

To me, bicycles are more akin to pedestrians who are free to walk with or against the traffic apart from cars in their own dedicated space given the potential for fatal
Etc.....
Clearly you missed the part about fatalities in the article.
In 2024, there were over 67,000 bicycle-related traffic accidents, with over 80% of fatal cases involving a cyclist violating traffic laws
So your whole claim of it being less dangerous for cyclists to not follow the laws and that cars are more dangerous etc... is void based on the simple fact 80% of cyclists fatalities are due to cyclists not following the rules/laws.
If you drive or have ever driven a car then you should understand, when driving you cannot have eyes infront left, right behind and above all the time, so when you are turning Left you look to your left check for pedestrians check for a cyclist on your left etc.... but under your way drivers would have to guess is a cyclist going to now ride down in the wrong direction and as I look left behind me he come from the left I'm front of me or from the left in the wrong lane in the road I am turning on to?
As it is now at a 4 way stop sign most drivers dread it because they know if there is a cyclist coming in any of the other 3 directions they are not going to stop.

I understand that changing existing roads is a huge challenge. But if the goal is to reduce accidents, encourage cycling (which is good for public health, congestion, and the environment), and make the roads safer for everyone, the government needs to do more than just introduce new fines and laws — again. They need to invest in infrastructure, starting with a commitment that all new roads include proper, separated cycle lanes, better lighting, and smarter design.
Nice idea now tell us how!
See my previous comment, there are plenty of roads all over Japan 10, 20, 30 etc... years where the plan was to widen them but doing so means expropriation of homes and businesses and surprise surprise, people are not easily willing to just let the government take their homes and property now you think even more land can be just taken from people in order to add fully separate bike lanes?
Because in order to do what you suggest land will need to be taken from people!

But so that I do not disturb those who are of your mind, I need to wait at the crosswalk and cross to the other side of the street, ride down the street on the opposite side, wait again at the crosswalk and cross back to the side of the street that I was just on
So using the same logic, when I go to the gyomu super by car the same situation but I must also take 2 extra roads to come around and get into the parking, so should I just drive in the opposite direction of traffic? Of course not, I follow the law and yes it takes longer and is less efficient but that is the law!

These new rules may help ring in a safer era for cyclists and pedestrians alike. But without proper bike lanes, telling people to stay off sidewalks is like trying to ride uphill in the wrong gear—tough, and a bit unfair. Enforcement is fine, but infrastructure matters too.
Nice idea, now explain how and wear these miraculous bike lanes can be built in most major cities in Japan.
For 30 plus years the city has been trying to expropriate land to widen a very busy road near my place in Tokyo "30 years!" the project is stalled.
Imagine trying to now add a bike lane, this applies in most places.
Now had the full article been posted here the previous "enforcement" rules on sidewalk would have been better understood.
Also the rest of the article also points out:
Drivers will now face fines of ¥5,000 to ¥9,000 if they fail to maintain a safe distance and speed when overtaking a bicycle. The goal is to give cyclists more confidence to ride on the road, reduce sidewalk congestion and improve pedestrian safety.
Now as I sit infront of the clinic waiting to see my doctor, I have been watching the major road infront here in Tokyo Japan, dedicated bike lanes in both directions and in the last 5 to 10 minutes I watched as at least 10 cyclists were going in the wrong direction of in the bike lanes forcing those following the correct direction to veer into the car lane to avoid them, this is nothing new it is a daily if not hourly/minute thing.
Sitting here watching, 90% of cyclists are not following the rules while nearly all the motor vehicles are, not a single car ran the red light not a single car ran through the pedestrian crossing as someone was walking but nearly every cyclists pushed through the pedestrians as the crossed and nearly half ran the red light.

Also, 16 and older, up to 19 y/o are considered minors in Japan and cannot be legally charged on a criminal case.
Need to update your information.
The age now is 18 years old and yes they can and have always been able to be charged but as juveniles and not adults.
What Sakurasuki and Girl-in-tokto mentioned is spot on. Sometimes you can ride on the road, and sometimes you cannot. And bike lanes are not always present and sometimes, they make no sense. Sometimes bike lanes are just some leftover on a turn on the road.
As I pointed out read the entire article links above.
That said, under the new blue ticket system starting in April 2026, riding on the sidewalk is not automatically illegal, but it can get you fined if done dangerously. Police have made it clear that enforcement will focus on reckless behavior, such as:
> Riding fast near pedestrians
Failing to yield the right of way
Ignoring police warnings
If you’re cycling on the sidewalk slowly and safely, you’ll likely be given a warning, not a ticket.
Like I pointed out follow the link to the full/rest of the article!

People should follow the link to the rest of the article.
It explains the riding on the sidewalk rules and the new rules that cars/motor vehicles are now also required to keep a safe distance from cyclists and not doing so will now be a ticketed offence.
The idea of bike lanes is great but not really possible in much of Japan, my road in theory is a two direction road but passing another car usually requires one pulling over into a parking or intersection so the other can pass, so imagine trying to put a bike lane also.
But also here in our Tokyo ward they have created a lot of new bike lanes, the problem is that cyclists don't follow the indicated direction often causing other cyclists to veer out into traffic despite having a bike lane.
It is interesting to note from the article.
In 2024, there were over 67,000 bicycle-related traffic accidents, with over 80% of fatal cases involving a cyclist violating traffic laws.
This clearly shows the problem it more on the cycling side than the motor vehicle side.

So because some silly parents what to use a Kanji and invent the pronunciations the government had to step in.
If they want to call their child Princess fine they can the new law doesn't stop them all the have to do is write it in katakana or hiragana.
Imagine meeting someone and his name card says "John Smith", and they he tells you No we pronounce it "Vincent van Gogh" well basically what people have been doing with Kanji names is that silly.

Let people name their kids whatever they want. As long as their last names fall under the standard reading
They are!
The article should have given an example (at least here in English news).
Example of things being done:
お姫 is "O hime" but people will put the kana as プリンセス (princess).
It is things like this they are saying isn't acceptable.
I am guessing and if I understand correctly the family can choose not to use Kanji in the given name and call the child "プリンセス" using katakana (possibly also hiragana) but to put お姫 then try and tell people it is pronounced "プリンセス" is just silly and extremely confusing for teachers, government, etc....
