Anywhere in Kyushu with the exception of Fukuoka and Nagasaki cities. Plenty of culture, great food, friendly people, some amazing nature, relatively calm and peaceful, only a short flight away from most major international hubs. Makes me wants to take another trip even just thinking about it.

Posted in: Elon Musk sells X to his own xAI for $33 billion in all-stock deal See in context

At this point it probably doesn't even matter (there's so much financial chicanery going on that numbers no longer make sense, privately held companies, Musk used this purchase to buy the ear of the president which has unlimited value), but on its face let's remember again that Musk purchased Twitter for $42 billion and is now "selling" it for $33 billion. He managed to light $9B on fire and make American society actively worse in the process. Well done.

Posted in: Vance accuses Denmark of underinvesting in Greenland See in context

Take a step back for a moment here. With all of the legitimate security challenges currently ongoing in the world, the VP, Energy Secretary, National Security Advisor, and a sitting senator took their valuable time to fly out to Greenland for this awkward, stunted extortion attempt at a location which poses exactly zero threat to US security and is safely in the hands of a (until now) friendly allied nation. Bizarre.

Anyways, national sovereignty is a concept you can learn in any high school civics class, but apparently they don't teach that at Yale Law. Sounds to me like JD needs to take some remedial classes.

Posted in: Ishiba says Trump's tariff views hard to understand See in context

I haven't heard the exact quote from Ishiba, but this sounds like a very diplomatic way of saying something is stupid or idiotic in Japanese - I think we all at JT are familiar with the stereotypical Japanese answer of muzukashii or "difficult" when asked to do something (in reality it's a flat out no, but you can't come out and say it directly). This is in the same vein, I think.

Of course, such a nuance would be lost of Trump and his gang of know-nothings.

Still completely baffled by the recasting of Downey Jr. here. He had a great, iconic run as Iron Man. Let that be enough.

In a sane world, multiple resignations would be immediately forthcoming based on this laughable breach of opsec. Instead, we'll get the same tired excuses from the same usual suspects over and over again.

Now, imagine that these guys are in charge of an actual shooting war against a foe that can really strike back. It should make the US think twice about any military activity on the globe, but as shown by his own comments, the president's completely checked out at this point. What an incredible state of affairs.

Posted in: 'Snow White' opens with sleepy $43 million at North American box office See in context

A lot of pontificating here from people who have the same response to every problem that exists in society, but I think the real problem is that Disney is out of ideas. It made sense to redo, say, Aladdin, as a lot of people have living memory of the original animated release, and they could get a lot of star power behind it as well. That doesn't mean that every single Disney movie in the vault should get the same treatment, especially something like Snow White which is seen as more of an historical curio these days for die hards. "Take everything old and make it live action CG" is a strategy that definitely has its limits.

Posted in: Tesla owners sour on Musk's venture into U.S. politics See in context

If any CEO of any other publicly traded company did a Nazi salute (let's call a spade a spade here), their company would be rightly shunned and shamed. In fact, said CEO would still be lucky to have his job, assuming that the board was paying attention. Musk isn't completely immune from the consequences of his actions, and Tesla stock is a pain point. Hit him where it hurts.

Posted in: Musk gives all federal workers 48 hours to explain what they did last week or resign See in context

To everyone railing away at "government employees" (and who is presumably working their rear end off to provide endless shareholder value as part of the private sector), how would you feel if someone who is not your boss, not your boss' boss, and nowhere in your legitimate chain of command, asked you to justify your continued employment within 48 hours or be fired?

You'd tell them to pound sand, that's what.

The fact is, DOGE is an unaccountable, extralegal, out of control chimera which will cause more damage (we're talking decades at this point) than it could ever possibly save in simple dollars and cents.

The end game, one can only assume, will be consequences borne by the mass of the population, while a new oligarch class finally lives free of pesky things like taxes, oversight, and regulation. If you're already part of this pending oligarch class, great. If you're not, which I am assuming is every single commenter on here, your life will be explicitly worse because of DOGE and its minions. That's the bottom line.

A shame, as a certain CEO (or, let's say, a character "inspired" by him) would have made a great Bond villain. Obviously, that will never happen now.

Posted in: Almost 90% of Japanese companies see Trump as bad for business, survey shows See in context

It's pretty clear by this point that Trump's economic policies will only benefit this immediate family and billionaire cohort, as they work feverishly to break down the systems that support the regular function of society for everone else. All this tariff talk is preemptive justification for a massive tax cut to the very wealthiest who are already at the top of the pyramid ("we made so much money from tariffs that we can give the money back to job creators", etc. etc.), while everyday folk are left to grapple with massive price increases wrought by these tariffs.

If you're not directly related to Trump or already a billionaire, it's tough luck for you.

I can't say that I'm surprised. Nissan is too proud to let me someone else call the shots. It looks like they'd rather wither away on the vine by themselves rather than even try to thrive with another company calling the shots. I would wish them luck but it's clear they are fairly delusional to their current situation.

Posted in: Little-known porn 'white post' boxes fading into Japan's lurid past See in context

I remember seeing one of these years ago on a main street in a moderately major city (I think it was Mito).

I didn't have terrific confidence in my Japanese reading ability at the time, but I remember being able to understand that this was a box "for things that you didn't want children to see".

"Is this box for what I think it is? ", i wondered. Turned out, yes it was!

Seems like having these on such a visible major street would be a problem for those that might plan to use it, however.

Narita is probably the least-apprexiated airport in history, just because "it's far away". Clean, punctual, safe, and yes, convenient. I'll say it.

I mean, an important ally which is also a leading direct oregin investor is going to get a lot of attention from any incoming president; it's not like this is specific to Trump. We should stop treating every little thing that he does as ground-breaking, unique, or dramatic.

Posted in: What a merger between Nissan and Honda means for the industry See in context

I can say, based on personal experience, that Nissan and Mitsubishi corporate cultures are very proud, if not outright arrogant. It's hard to see the rank and file taking orders from Honda on just about anything. (Nissan and Mitsubishi barely work together as it is.)

Beyond trying to mix those corporate cultures, they'll also need to integrate ordering/procurement, inventory management, engineering, manufacturing, R&D and product development, sales channels, advertising... a potential non stop series of headaches. Good luck.

It's been said that if you cut Rickey Henderson in half, you'd have two Hall of Famers. Which is true; his career stats are so incredible, if you divided them by 2 he'd still have a Hall-worthy resume. An incredible ballplayer and entertainer. RIP.

Posted in: Why is SoftBank investing over $100 billion in U.S.? See in context

Regardless what Son does to create jobs etc is infinitely more than what most people do

Yes, billionaires have the resources and ability to create a lot of jobs if they wish to do so. And just as easily, they can destroy thousands of jobs with a single stroke of a pen. We shouldn't give them a free pass for their actions just because they occasionally deign to do the former.

Son's actions show that he is more than willing to cozy up to bad actors if he thinks it will profit him, and in this case, for investments which may or may not provide a lot of good jobs, but will definitely cause significant environmental damage. It's better to be wary than grateful.

Hmm, but I was told endlessly that inflation was squeezing people's budgets, so we had to vote Republican this year. It's almost as this this angle was played up for political purposes and didn't match the actual situation on the ground.

Remember, until Inaguration Day, we're still in Biden's economy. I highly, highly doubt that the average consumer is thinking that Trump will be president in two months, so I'll spend more on this year's Christmas. If thr money supposedly wasn't there because of inflation, it's not going to magically arrive a couple of weeks later.
