How about all those who ride bicycles while staring at a smartphone screen and/or while listening to music with headphones? And how about all those drivers who run stop signs habitually, causing great danger to bicyclists who ride sensibly? The police should focus on these issues if they really care about public safety.

It doesn't really matter because capitalism is now working more and more for the very wealthy and less and less for everyone else. The former get richer and pay less in taxes while the latter fret over price hikes in the hundreds (and thousands) of yen. Farmers also feel the squeeze, so they tend to support the LDP for subsidies. The entire political and financial system needs to be overhauled.

Posted in: 81-year-old woman hit, killed by car; driver arrested for negligence See in context
In Japan, drivers who stop for people at crosswalks with no traffic lights get thanked for stopping by surprised pedestrians, while those who refuse to stop almost never face any consequences. It's "extremely regrettable."

The police should patrol more diligently during certain times of the day, and school zones need to be clearly established and patrolled by the police, and probably also by community members. Drivers need to slow down where kids are walking, and to stop at crosswalks. and people (especially grade school students) on bicycles need to understand that someone riding a bicycle is closer legally to being the driver of a car, and is not just a fast pedestrian.

The fact that the driver was elderly is probably not important The main problem is police negligence. They don't crack down and enforce the traffic laws, so too many drivers become accustomed to racing along at whatever speed they please. Going 20-30 (or even 40) kph over the limit becomes normal, as does ignoring traffic signs. It's a nationwide phenomenon.

The architect of the March 1945 firebombing of Tokyo was General Curtis LeMay, the model for George C. Scott's paranoid and ultra-hawkish character in Dr. Strangelove. In the year of that film's release (1964), Japan's government awarded the First Order of Merit with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun to LeMay (of all people). Yet, it refuses to compensate the victims of the attack. Go figure.

No, they don't. In Japan, death row inmates are kept in solitary confinement and are told when they will be hanged only shortly before it happens.

Posted in: Over 80% support death penalty in Japan: gov't survey See in context
This survey result is suspicious, as questions can easily be geared to lead to certain outcomes. Recent research has pointed to an increase of this in government surveys on the topic over the last few decades, and to lower past public support. Moreover, only slightly more than 50% of people polled in the USA express support for capital punishment, and the global trend is against it, so this "over 80%" result is dubious. Yet, support in Japan is high, but this is largely due to the fact that the government deliberately discourages open, public discussions of the topic. Rather, it simply states that capital punishment is needed because violent crime exists in Japan, despite the total lack of credible evidence for the death penalty's effectiveness as a deterrent.

Cannabis "abuse" is less dangerous than "normal" alcohol consumption. And if cannabis "abuse" among young people is such a worry, then address the main cause (widening economic and social class disparities in society and resulting anxiety about the future) rather then criminalizing the symptoms. Cannabis is less addictive than alcohol, anyway.

Progressive taxing only, please - tax the wealthy and big corporations more, and raise taxes on tobacco and luxury goods. And give a tax break to those in the lowest income brackets. That would be much better for Japanese society...but the LDP doesn't really care about society so much.

Nippon Kaigi (Japan Conference) will strongly disagree, and the debate will either be protracted or quashed. But it will return, because of Keidanren's stance and because there is a loophole that creates a double-standard which the government can't do anything about - in a marriage between a Japanese national and a foreigner the two parties can maintain their own surnames. (Why, then, can two citizens not do the same?)
