Can't wait to see how Trump and Fox attempt to spin this one.

Akazawa is in Washington but Lutnick can't be bothered to meet him face to face. The arrogance is astounding.

Does sound very MAGA-like - encourage anger at an outside person, blaming them for any troubles, and mesmerize with charm and charisma.

Where I live it looks like "Kongs Island "....just full of forest, and little rivers and bays for swimming.

That sounds fantastic!

"Dad went to war," he says. Shooting unarmed people in their doorways while disguised as a cop. Clearly deeply unhinged.

Posted in: Suspect in custody after shooting Minnesota lawmakers while posing as officer See in context

Those pretending this guy was part of the No Kings protests are being pathetically dishonest. Everything about the guy, starting with what a loser he is, points to MAGAville. Why else would he only target Dems and Planned Parenthood people?

You really reallly really want to make this political I guess.

The guy had a list of politicians to target. At what point was it NOT going to be political? MAGA cult Christian nationalist gun lover with an AK 47.

Posted in: Japan to tighten rules on foreign tourists over unpaid medical bills See in context

I get 91 people didn't pay - with average unpaid bills worth 674,175 yen. That's pretty serious medical treatment.

Posted in: 'Bumping men' are a uniquely Japanese class of criminals that are hard to deal with See in context

Happened to me in Roppongi while I was on a date. I was ticked off, but there's no upside to escalating the situation, so I reminded myself it wasn't personal -- in the sense it wasn't really about me, but about his tiny little impotent anger at the world. He moved off pretty fast, too, so...

Last month when the ADP numbers were exceptional?

What are you talking about? The April ADP gain was 60,000, barely half the figure it was a year earlier (113,000 in April 2024). How is that exceptional?

Bicycle bosozoku... Seems like an improvement over the original version.

Posted in: New bike laws in Japan take effect in 2026. What cyclists and drivers need to know See in context

I have a similar dilemma on my commute. Just a question: if I were cycling towards you on the correct side of the road - the left - as you were riding against traffic, would you let me pass on your right (closer to the curb) or would you expect to take the curbside line?

I'd let you pass on my right because a) that sticks with drive on the left norms and b) as the person who can see oncoming traffic I'm in a better position to judge if it's a bad time to pass.

Posted in: U.S. court blocks Trump's tariffs; says president exceeded his authority See in context

To be clear, for anyone who thinks this is a liberal plot, the legal complaint was brought by a conservative legal advocacy group called the Liberty Justice Center, which said the US trade deficits are “neither an emergency nor an unusual or extraordinary threat.”

Posted in: In your experience, how hard or easy is it to get a driver's license in Japan? What were the written and driving tests like? See in context

I was one of 10 foreigners doing the foreign license conversion, and 8 people in my group didn't pass. I passed because I paid for a two-hour practice session and learned all the tricks -- looking under the car before starting, adjusting mirrors and steering wheel whether necessary or not, keeping my head on a swivel.

Facts don't matter when your constituents are accustomed to living in a daily haze of hysterical noise and emotion. They're addicted to the surge of rage - and he and Fox feed their addiction.

Posted in: Japanese farm minister apologizes after saying he has never had to buy rice See in context

I can understand he didn't need to buy his rice. But where's the sense of curiosity? If he's going to be a politician, he should have an interest in knowing how normal people live. The leading candidate in South Korea's election worked in a sweat shop as a child. Now there's someone with his feet on the ground.

Posted in: Gabbard fires 2 top intelligence officials See in context

So because they work under her and she has to be loyal to them?

The fixation on personal loyalty is the problem. Casting the entire world as a giant Potemkin Village is in no one's interest - even Trump's. Truth and accuracy shouldn't be sacrificed for personal agendas.
