Posted in: Ishiba arrives in Canada to attend G7, meet Trump over tariffs See in context
I'm sure Freud would have something to say about how Trump consumes the reasoning of some of you.
As the leader of the only Asian member of the G7, Ishiba said he will talk about the situation in the Indo-Pacific and stress the role of the group, which marks this year a half-century since its inception, in maintaining peace and stability "be it in Ukraine, the Middle East or Asia."
The Group of Seven (G7) is an intergovernmental political and economic forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Let see, which one has the military capability to help protect allies...?
Key point for the posters on here always being so critical of the US and President Trump. At the end of the day, we are still Japan's closest and strongest ally.

I like the idea for many reasons as long as there is a good, non-partisan manner the money can be distributed from Federal Gov't to the States.
I agree with the statement that the Govenors should be able to handle what FEMA does IF they have the money. Currently many of them just get their disaster declaration then sit back and criticize the Federal response based on politics. It takes the pressure off them to do anything for themselves, and they score political points.
But, there is a long road ahead to make it happen. Government scale seems to only increase easily, not decrease.

Whatever the cause of the increase, good news that the women (and/or men) are seeking help.
I drink, but not to excess. I quit drinking beer because the hops causes joint pain. I didn't believe it until I went 3 or 4 months without any. Joint pain gone. I was drinking no more than 2 beers per day and it caused joint pain.
After being around a lot of other men while drinking, I feel lucky enough to have more of an urge to stop than to keep going after a few beers. Alcohol losses it's appeal to me after I reach a modest buzz. And, I always want food when I drink. I guess that helps.

To the Japanese posters on here supporting Iran and their right to develop nuclear weapons, how about North Korea? We all good there for nukes? What, "not in my backyard"? What, "the US better stop them or protect us if NK gets nukes". Yeah, I thought so.
Israel is reacting to a neighbor who calls them "little Satan" and calls for their death and destruction and who is on the verge of having nuclear weapons.
Please post that you are fine with North Korea also have nuclear weapons and you wish the US "would just go away".

Posted in: Toyota proposes selling U.S. cars in Japan to support tariff talks See in context
Those criticizing the quality and fuel consumption rate are not well informed about Toyota USA. I retired after 22 years for Toyota USA. I worked on the design of Toyota models.
"GAS guzzling": Toyota produces several models that are fully electric and many others that are electric hybrid vehicles made in the USA. In fact, almost all Toyota made in the US are offered as gas-electric hybrid models.
"Poor Quality": Toyota Motor Corporation Japan has engineers involved (and usually Chief Engineer) in US based vehicles. Toyota quality standards strategy is global, not just for Japan. US made Toyota vehicles is very high.
Japan tax laws cause Japanese buyer to get a new vehicle every 3 or 4 years. In the US, it is very common for vehicles to be driven 20-30 years. I personally own a 1995 Toyota Tacoma that was made in USA: very reliable. It is very common for American to have car 20+ years old and in the US older Toyota has cars have reputation as very reliable.
As always with auto purchase, I think price will be a big factor in success selling Toyota made in the USA in Japan. But, I think quality and fuel consumption will be fine for Japanese customers.

A lot of posts in other JT stories about how the police in the US are being used to create a "Fascist State". Even though they are arresting people in the country illegally.
Then I come to this article and even the Japanese people admit that the police in Japan will interrogate people, including those in the country legally, for days to get a confession even if it's a false statement. In the US all a person has to say is "I want my lawyer" and the interrogation ends. Who is creating the Fascist State?

Ishiba san just needs to decide what he's going to offer the US to be allowed to do business here. Specifically, agricultural product imports seem to be an area he could improve the relationship...wheat, fish, beef,... Japanese consumers and US farmers will both benefit.
Japanese manufacturing companies have been good at locating in the US when it makes good business sense for them. Toyota in particular has invested heavily in the US. That's fine/understandable as far as the "why". The money invested is still creating US jobs.
I personally hope the US-Japan relationship remains good overall. I think this will resolve very soon. Trump and Ishiba san, like ALL politicians, both need to be able to walk away looking good. They'll will find a way.

No, the shots should not have been fired. But a bunch of soft shoes wearing diplomats have no business walking around in a war zone to ' get a sense of daily living in Gaza'. If they can't imagine that after seeing the destruction on TV, they don't qualify as decision makers.
If you need to touch fire to know that it will burn your skin, you're an idiot. Let me sum it up for them. Life in an area that has been subjected to this much bombing, has no food or utilities or shelter, is hell. There, no need to "go and see it".

"That money would be better directed to treatment and preventative healthcare for young people."
My parents are 90 years old and we care for them at home. I see the same things you have described. My mother has dementia. She doesn't acknowledge being married, having children refuses to bathe,... Recently she fell and hit her head. Her doctor wanted us to start taking her to physical therapy twice a week to strengthen her legs. Seriously? She rarely knows where she is or who any of us are. Did he really think she was going to follow the instructions of a therapist and do strength training?
No, he did not. But since she had hit her head, no doubt he was thinking if he didn't make that recommendation, he would be liable if she fell again and was injured.
My guess is fear of malpractice drives many of these seemingly wasteful courses of action by physicians.

Sorry, that's just incorrect. Take beef meat for example. 2025 tariff rate for beef entering Japan from the US is 21.6%. There are many others listed in the US-Japan Trade Agreement of 2020:

Many people who go to prison in the US for crimes on children get jailhouse justice carried out on them. For example, if you go to prison for a sex crime against child your life expectancy is very much reduced in some prisons. If you're not in segregation, you will be punished and possibly killed by other prisoners.
Even convicts don't tolerate crime on children. I hope he gets what he deserves whether experts find him insane or not.

Posted in: Gov't panel urges more tariff-free rice be used for human consumption See in context
The panel under the Finance Ministry recommended that the quota system should be managed more flexibly to respond to demand from private companies and households, saying the move would support stable domestic supply.
The article doesn't explain so well for us foreigners why the imported rice is primarily used for animal feed, but the above statement makes it seem the Gov't dictates it be used for animals. However, since some of the rice is eaten by humans, I must assume the rice meets standards for human consumption. Therefore, I have to assume the Gov'ts intention is just to protect rice farmers income.
I understand protecting farmers, but maybe there should be a price point and harvest minimum where "emergency allocations due to domestic shortages" are implemented and the US rice can be purchased for consumption by humans. Seems reasonable.
