Trump sure loves to throw tariffs and sue people and countries.

Dear Mr Japan: Is Trump blowing up Japan-U.S. relations?

Absolutely so, and the same goes with relations with other countries.

Posted in: Trump says he's 'not happy' with Putin and blames him for 'killing a lot of people' in Ukraine See in context

That's Trump. Always blaming someone other than himself. Never taking responsibility, but always taking credit for someone else's work. Not my leader, as if he was successful in leading anything without moving the goal post.

Since when is ultra processed food ever healthy? Any ideas? Any evidence? If it's so healthy, maybe he should stick to that diet.

Posted in: Trump to put 25% tariffs on Japan and S Korea; new import taxes on 5 other nations See in context

What does Trump want? Japanese people buying Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles?

@Nishikat - Well, he wants to be a dictator and there's plenty of evidence of that. Now, clearly the role of the Presidency, like the roles of other politicians, is to serve the people. Trump only has been serving himself while throwing others under his bus.

'I should not have gone out naked,'

Well, that's common sense.

Another lie by Trump. Yet, his cult will follow and believe anything from that regime. The less you know, the more you are controllable. Look at his cult.

Given is losing track record, what makes him an authority? Not everyone, Donny, gets to go back to Mar de lardo and play golf when things get worse for the country and the world.

Posted in: Sharing of indecent images by teachers in group chat sparks concern See in context

During my brief stint as an English teacher in Jr and Sr high schools I was shocked by just how many teachers were married to ex students. All men, female teachers were more likely to marry other teachers.

You and me both. Same with me at my first junior/senior high school (all-girls). Yes, a few of the teachers were married to former students at that school. Some others, married, and some were getting up there in age and still single, living with their parents. Every year that I was there, the single teachers would discretely scope students and other single teachers (I was single and a complete "newbie" there and in Japan at the time). However, I was more concerned with professionalism and keeping personal concerns aside from my job.

Posted in: Elementary and junior high students speak out on Japan’s strangest school rules See in context

I once worked at an all-girl's junior and senior high school, where I saw a teacher trying to remove make-up from a student's face while telling her "Natural is beautiful." in English (Yes, the teacher was a Japanese English teacher). The student then told that teacher, "Then why are you wearing make-up sensei? Not beautiful?" I heard the student later got suspended for talking back to the teacher.

Posted in: Trumps drop 'Made in the USA' label for new phone and a debate ensues: How to define 'made'? See in context

Well, this is just great (sarcasm). A convicted felon hawking phones. Will anyone buy these phones? It is really rich (no pun intended) that RFK Jr. said that anyone can afford these phone. He is definitely living somewhere else. But really, you might reckon that these phones might have some spy chips that his Administration can check how and where people are using these phones.

Well. we'll see with her. I definitely couldn't stand Bach, especially when he pretty much put pressure on the city of Tokyo to push forward with the games, even though it was not very popular with the community.

Posted in: Pint-size pioneer 'Dora the Explorer' celebrates her 25th anniversary See in context

My oldest daughter loved Dora and was very gung ho about learning Spanish, even down to Dora's accent. Dora is a good and simple role model for Spanish speaking culture, just like Tai Lam is for Chinese culture. My favorite Dora character is Swiper. "Swiper, no swiping." "Oh man!"

Posted in: Japan's free high school policy may provoke exodus from public schools See in context

Just for clarification, even though the tuition is free, there are other expenses not free. As someone who worked for a private junior/senior high school, there are fees for books, computers (if the students are issued laptops for their classes), class trips, especially international trips. That is on top of other activities that parents have to pay for, like jukus and other extra help classes.

Police arrested a 28-year-old woman at the scene. The suspect, Mira Hirata, an office worker, was quoted by police as saying, "I don’t have any memory (of the incident), so I don’t know anything,”

At that age, how can you NOT have a memory of such incident?

Posted in: Japanese prisons to place more focus on rehabilitation than punishment See in context

Don't give that credit to Japan prison system, give credit to Japanese society too. In fact the Japanese justice system contribute to Japan hostage justice system just like @obladi said that try to keep 99% conviction rate.

Point well made. Comparing Japan's incarceration rate to the rest of the western world, you do have a point; especially compared with the US, along side with Japan mostly promoting good values; hence good family values of people knowing what to do and what not to do. For example, there are alcohol vending machines, but with low crime relating to the use of these machines.
