Posted in: Trump pressure to boost Japan defense spending could strain alliance See in context

"But Japan may not be able to finance defense spending equivalent to 2 percent of GDP, given that the nation's fiscal health is the worst among major industrialized countries, with public debt more than twice the size of its economy."

Japan has a choice, up the spending on defense or learn how to speak Mandarin when China takes over.

When it comes to humanity, Carter was the definition of humanity.

However, when it comes to being a leader and the President of the United States of America, Carter failed.

This position requires a leader and a humanitarian is not a leader.

Carter made up for his lack of leadership when he involved himself in humanitarian projects around the world. This is what he will be remembered for.

Posted in: China says U.S. is 'playing with fire' after latest military aid for Taiwan See in context

China hasn't realized it yet, but they are no longer a dominant power when it comes to world affairs.

Their economy is in the tank and the military defense is a facade.

Reverse engineering American technology without knowledge and skill builds copies which are junk.

When are they going to build a real fighter jet which can take off fully loaded from a carrier without a ski jump?

Quit stealing U.S. technolgoy and create your own?

Posted in: China's ban on key high-tech materials could have broad impact on industries, economy See in context

Not good in the short term, but good for the long term.

The U.S. and its allies should not rely on China to provide strategic materials for their high-tech and defense industries.

Posted in: Trump's victory raises prospect of trade war impacting Japan, other U.S. allies See in context

When it comes to tariffs, as long as there is fair trade between the U.S. and Japan, there should be no concern.

However, when it comes to fair trade between the U.S. and China, there is serious concern because the China has a record of dumping their products in the U.S. market which unfair prices.

Trump is a business man and knows dumping when he sees it and he's not shy to call it out.

World leadership has been woefully lacking for 3 1/2 years with the Biden/Harris administration.

How do you justify the conflicts going on in the world?

Russia invades the Ukraine, Hamas attacks Israel on its own soil, the Houthis attack commercial shipping in the Red Sea, China harasses the Philippines in the South China Sea, China harasses Taiwan over the Taiwan Strait, and North Korea launches rockets over the Sea of Japan.

Where's the leadership that was promised by the Biden/Harris administration?

Posted in: Iran rejects Western calls to stand down Israel threat See in context

Iran needs to retaliate. The assassination of the Hamas leader in their secured compound in city of Teheran is a humiliation they cannot ignore. Their people demand fitting revenge.

Unfortunately, the options are limited when it comes to retaliating. They must deliver a hard enough blow to Israel to declare victory, but at the same time avoid a counter attack by Israel.

Israel is a nation where if you hit me once, I will hit you twice. They believe in an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth plus an adder.

When all other clean options are taken into consideration, nuclear energy is a clear cut winner i.e. clean, robust, and reliable.

Three mile island, Chernoble, and Fukushima did happen but the world did not come to an end. Also, nuclear techonology has advanced and spent fuel rods can be reprocessed. No Yucca mountain required.

What's missing is the will.

EV's are not the panacea to solving the problem of climate change. Only now automotive experts are beginning to see the downside of EV's as the population of EV's increases.

In additions to vehicles fires, insufficient or defective charging stations, premature tire wear, and higher insurance premiums, a new problem of weak road barriers and multi-deck parking garages unable to handle the added weight of EV's.

Will our existing freeways and highways need to be upgraded in the interest of public safety and at what costs?
