By definition a single share, whether gold or brown, is still a single share. Did they really just bamboozle him with nonsense?

Google "golden share". It's much more than a single share.

People here know more about golden showers than golden shares, it seems. Telling.

The troubling thing is, a victim in this situation would be powerless. Who is she going to complain to? You think she would go to the police station after being traumatized by the police?

It's highly unlikely that he was wearing his uniform, so she wouldn't know he was a policeman until he was arrested. Which he was.

Posted in: How much of a military threat is China to Japan? See in context

It would be very mendokusai for China to think about going to war with Japan, all for what? To acquire an earthquake prone land with very little beneficial resources for China.

Nobody said anything about colonizing Japan. They are a threat because many in the CCP carry grudges and seek to dominate Japan. If you don't understand how they think, you make the assumption that they think like you.

They are probably doing the right thing. Presidents change every 4 years, and now Nippon Steel has its foot in the door.

Posted in: Japan’s most popular curry rice restaurant chain losing customers as it raises prices See in context

People who say they prefer the Indian, Nepali, etc. curry shops over Coco seem to miss the point. Coco is a Japanese curry shop, not an Indian curry shop. Its fine for what it is, and having 1200 shops pretty much testifies to that. But uninformed food snobbery abounds. Saying that a local Indian curry shop is better than Coco is like saying that Italian food is better than French. They are two different cuisines.

If you are foreign tourist who is planning on visiting Japan and doing something illegal, unethical, or acting like a moron and are reading this, do all of us a favor and just stay home.

Agreed, but this woman obviously wasn't a tourist. Just some woman recruited in Brazil who likely has never traveled much of anywhere, much less Japan. I doubt her life in Brazil was all that rosy. From what I know, too many of these people are eventually just released and deported - as though being banned from entering Japan is some sort of punishment to an impoverished Brazilian. Prison is essential if these sorts of crimes are to be deterred at all. And, rather than arresting her right away, why don't they let her carry the drugs through so they can see who she gives them to on this end? Catching the mules only won't accomplish much.

This is old thinking. In this age of immediate access and global internet, government promotion of culture overseas is nothing but a waste of money. When was the last time the government could pick a rising cultural trend? China's stodgy cultural promotions are a case in point.

Posted in: Trump has long warned of a government 'deep state.' Now in power, he's under pressure to expose it See in context

There is no rational line of thinking that doesn't overwhelmingly suggest an Epstein cover up. But in cases like this with very powerful interests, there are very few people who are able and willing to expose the truth and accept the danger that would come with that.

Even putting "deep state" into scare quotes (as they do here) is denying basic human history. There has always been power behind the throne - in every civilization. One would have to be hopelessly naive to think otherwise. It is perhaps worse in the US because of the sheer volume, the money involved, and the massive amount of so-called "national security secrets."

Make the people that produce, and specially that profit, from the images legally responsible.

13-year-old boys will be doing this in their bedrooms. You going after them? Sometimes you just have to live with changes.

Nothing. But that won't stop them from passing laws and arresting a few early adopters. In a couple years, every schoolboy will be able to make deep fakes. It will be to the point that we will assume such videos are fake until proven otherwise.

Time to swallow that pride and ask China how to do it. Or India.

Why? They haven't done it themselves. If successful, this would have been the first lunar landing by a private (non-government) company outside of the USA. Everybody loves to criticize failures, but when they finally succeed, everybody pretends they knew they would all along.

Very unfair to the victims to cast aspersions like this. People getting killed over legitimate business disagreements in China is nothing new. It can happen to anyone.

If Japan wanted, they could reduce taxes/tariffs on foreign foods so people living in Japan could choose which was most important. Complain to your J-Govt reps about their blocking of food from outside Japan.

I don't know why American persist with this falsehood, but the vast majority of US produce faces no tariffs at all in Japan (unlike the US, which sometimes has very high tariffs and trade barriers).

And so far as agriculture theft, it happens everywhere. A truckload of fruit is a good haul in most developed countries.

If one is looking for a hostage, perhaps to apply political pressure, or perhaps to obtain information, trade secrets or cooperation from the hostage's employer, an espionage charge is very convenient. Details can't be revealed for "national security reasons." It's not as though China hasn't done this before.

Posted in: Do you think Japan will be caught up in a major war in Asia before the end of this decade? See in context

If Taiwan is attacked by China, what would Japan actually do?

China has already stated they would bomb US bases in Japan if the US got involved. So there's that at least. Also, many in the Chinese CCP and military still harbor a hatred of Japan and a desire for "revenge" for the actions of Japanese 80+ years ago who are all long dead now.

That Japan might get sucked into war is one of my biggest concerns here.

Normally, I would say lock him up and throw the key away. A horrible crime. But the boy is 15 and sounds mentally broken. His circumstances at home might be quite awful as well. Perhaps he can't be redeemed, but I wouldn't rule it out. Need to know more about his circumstances first.

Funny how JT and its readers, as well as the media, nationalize religious issues between temples. Besides making South Korea sound bad for having a "stolen" Buddha action figure, it also seemingly pins the blame on sour relations Korea's fault. In return, Japan should return Dokdo to Korea and Okinawa to Okinawa.

Congratulations on providing the best example of someone who "just doesn't get it" that I have seen in a long time.

lol, sure. This place is hilarious as always.

It's been said if you take away Led Zeppelin's right to steal songs, then where will they get them?

I envy you. So much confidence even though you are so obviously wrong. Actual musicians, not to mention the court, threw out the case for Stairway. I met the guy who wrote it and watched him play. I was familiar with the original song (called Taurus, by a great band you no doubt are unfamiliar with, Spirit). It was the weakest track on the album, filler actually. A simple chord progression that went nowhere, like he started a song but couldn't finish it. Randy C (who wrote Taurus) never sued over it while he was alive - it was his estate that went for it.

All musicians "steal", though Zep was more egregious than others, and never gave credit. On the other hand, most of the songs they stole were built into something different altogether, which is why they became as successful as they did. Then, of course, there were numerous songs that nobody claimed were plagiarized.

Maybe you should take up the ukulele - music is a wonderful thing when you know a bit about it.

While the Stairway to Heaven case didn't have much merit, Dazed and Confused was indisputably taken from Jake Holmes' song (of the same name, no less). How Jimmy treats Jake so horribly is a real stain on his reputation. It's pocket change to Jimmy Page and money probably needed by Jake Holmes,

They can only be sold on the open market and not sure that would do wonders for the Japanese economy.

It wouldn't. But in a rush for the exit, people will look to get out with whatever they can. A loss of trust in US treasuries is entirely possible, and no country would want to be the last out the door. As noted, China has already been dumping them discretely. I would hate to see Japan left holding the bag - that wouldn't be good for the Japanese economy either.

Dreadful the wife is dead.

*GRC: "Woman in critical condition after being stabbed..."*

"His wife was in a state of cardiac arrest when taken to hospital." In Japan, this means no heartbeat. i.e., dead. Media generally don't report death until it is officially certified.

Posted in: Japan's new food supply emergency measures law takes effect See in context

As important as food supplies are, state-controlled agriculture almost always fails and often even results in famine. Plenty of real-life examples. Even in Japan, the police confiscated rice from hungry families following the war due to a "rice shortage" while the wealthy and government-connected had secret huge stocks. The government should support farmers, but this sounds more like control.
