The middle class is thinning out, that's what's happening. The bigger the underclass is, the higher the crime. This is the direct result of the thirty lost years.

I’m kind of surprised Trump even knew that Japanese-American citizens had been interned in America during World War II.

Hopefully a wake up call for the LDP, but I doubt it. They'll continue to line their pockets until they're all booted from office.

Posted in: Do you think that a man giving up his seat on a bus or train to a woman, holding a door open for her or holding her chair as she sits down is outmoded? See in context

If someone is coming behind me, I hold the door open for them, whether they are male, female, young or old, and many people do the same for me. I think that's the way it should be.

They're just good, wholesome movies from the pre-goytertainment movie era. It's promising to see some of the lost generation pick up on that.

I find the whole culture around airports and flying utterly abhorrent.

Lest thee forget (2019):

Google on Wednesday admitted that partners who work to analyze voice snippets from the Google Assistant leaked more than 1,000 private conversations to a Belgian news outlet.

I deGoogled five years ago and haven't looked back. You'd be surprised at the quality of the alternatives out there. And as an added bonus, my private conversations at home aren't being leaked to media outlets!

Posted in: Japan to address issue of foreign trainees quitting in record numbers See in context

We had three SEAs and an African, with an Iranian supervisor who could speak Japanese, knock down one of the houses on my street last month. The road was littered with broken glass, screws, and nails; no attempt whatsoever to clean up by any of them. Having grown up being culturally enriched in the west, and fortunate enough for diversity to have made me stronger, I spent most of the night out with a flashlight picking up the lethal detritus and saving my neighbours, bicycle riders, and visiting delivery drivers a fortune in punctures.

Posted in: Is ‘Africa’ a racial slur and should the continent be renamed? See in context

How about we take a more literal stance and simply refer to Africa as the poorest, most poverty-stricken continent on earth. Other options could include factual observations such as economic insecurity, poor education, political instability, corruption, weak or nonexistent healthcare systems, civil wars, terrorist insurrections, lack of innovation, poor infrastructure, widespread destitution despite being no. 1 beneficiaries of global handouts, etc.

This would avoid any upsetting references to race or skin colour.

Posted in: Japan wants its hardworking citizens to try a 4-day workweek See in context

All the comments that address Japan's woeful productivity hit the nail firmly on the head. The Japanese work hard at achieving little in order to appear hardworking. And many are rewarded for doing so. What's most alarming about this is the skills gap that lies behind it, rather than any perceivable lack of work ethic. The majority of the workforce here simply aren't very good at what they do.

Everyone the girl was 17, a teenager, teens generally do not think about consequences until after the fact.

I'm pretty sure that by 17, most teenagers would understand that the consequence of jumping off a high building is almost invariably death.
