Nope. If a restaurant requires me to use my phone to scan a QR code to see the menu, I'll get up and walk out right then and there. Restaurant's own tablet? No problem, but I'm not using my phone. Non-negotiable...

Pretty sure Airbus will be more than happy to hook him up with a shiny new set of wings.
Which will contain avionics from Colling Aerospace and Honeywell. Eventually replacements could arise, but these aren't items (radar systems, flight management systems, etc.) that can go from a clean sheet to delivered finished product quickly. Time scales would be measured in months and years.
Trade wars are just not worth it.

The suspect's life depends on this: if he's found competent to stand trial, the near-certain conviction probably means he hangs. If he can't be tried, he quite likely lives out his life in an institution. Most important is that he's never in a position to take another innocent life.

Trumps tariff views are easier to understand when you recognize that he (and his clown car of a cabinet) have the global economic sophistication of a middle schooler. Moreover, the decisions being made by Trump (and his oligarch handlers) aren't being made with the slightest consideration for ordinary people, American or otherwise. This is all about consolidating political control and amassing an even greater level of obscene wealth. The 25% automotive tariff being a perfect example: this will arm the entire auto industry...except for struggling Tesla. That one's Musk's idea...count on it.

Posted in: World Athletics to require chromosome testing of athletes in women's track and field See in context
Have to disagree this time, virusrex. While it is indeed the case that a simple chromosome test is a far from perfect solution and that it will likely result in discrimination against some athletes, the present status quo, in which literally thousands of (mostly fully-intact) biological males have been allowed to compete against females, is demonstrably worse. The status quo represents physical danger to female athletes in some sports, a grossly unlevel playing field in many more, and threatens to undo the decades of hard work in establishing women's sports in the first place. One can sympathize with the tiny handful of cases in which the athletes prevented from competing in the female category are NOT intact male transwomen or 5-alpha reductase deficient males, but the needs of literally millions of female athletes seeking safe and fair competition outweigh them. "Perfect is the enemy of good."

They couldn't care less about any negative effects from these defunding decisions. The only thing - literally the ONLY thing - that matters enough to the current administration to actually influence policy is reducing government expenditures in order to provide yet more tax breaks to big corporations and multi-billionaire individuals. They might try to avoid alienating enough of their voter base to cause them to lose the mid-term Congressional elections...but that's by no means guaranteed. It probably depends on just which set of handlers is currently exerting the most influence over the rapidly-decaying gasbag in the Oval Office. He probably doesn't have long, considering all the indications: increasing tendency to babble incoherently, that pronounced forward stoop when he stands (associated with advancing dementia), serious obesity at nearly 80, etc.). Vance will likely be harder to influence (he'll have aspirations of being re-elected), so they're operating at a breakneck pace..

Never in my long life, much of it spent in various drug-permissive US states, have I encountered a drug user interested in giving away their expensive stash to children (or anyone). I'm sure such things have happened over the years, but I have little doubt they are incredibly rare. Like "struck by lightning" rare, at most. There was a lot more justification to worry that this guy might have been a paedo.

For anyone unable to read minds, there is no way of knowing if the trespasser is just some harmless weirdo like this guy or someone with far less benign intent. Guys like the former or drunks stumbling onto the wrong property are probably less common that people intending thievery (or far worse), even in a low crime place like Japan. Certainly at least being prepared to defend yourself when dealing with a trespasser is only sensible.

Covid vaccinations are still free in Australia, and recommended every 6 months. I take them as soon as they are available to take.
Before moving to Japan last year, I was getting mine in the US (also for free). I was lucky to avoid contracting COVID for a long time, but when I finally did get it in 2022, my symptoms were mild and relatively short-lived, one of the claimed benefits of the vaccines. Here in Japan I'm going to have to shell out for the next one, but i'm a geezer, so at least there will be a discount.
