The Ukrainian Army officers at the front know they can’t win the war or even hold back the Russians any longer.

Those who have studied the history of war know that there always comes a breaking point after which the outcome simply isn’t in doubt any longer. Tragically, the kings, generals, and politicians who wage wars very seldom accept the inevitable, and so they drag things out long past the breaking point, thereby leaving the losing country worse off than it would have been if they’d waved the white flag at the appropriate point and at the cost of far more lives than needed to be lost.

Ukraine is now at that point. Russia is advancing faster than at any point since the initial invasion, at a rate of 30 square kilometers per day, and it is doing so without launching the sort of Zhukov-style mass offensive for which the Russian military is famous. The extent to which the Ukrainian forces have been degraded suggests that this summer will bring one or more large-scale offensives that will finally break the Ukrainian lines and cause a crisis for the Kiev regime.

And at that point, many recriminations will be correctly aimed at the US and European leaders who failed to force a surrender that would have cost less in terms of territory and lives than the one that will inevitably follow.

Why were Israel even there?

I don’t care in the slightest about Eurovision, but in light of the “controversy” I’m astonished that the Eurovision people permitted Israel to compete at all.

Around 4,000 musicians, artist and music industry pros from five Nordic countries signed an open letter denouncing the Middle Eastern country’s entry in the 69th Eurovision song contest in Basel.

Those who signed the statement, including some previous Eurovision winners, dubbed Israel’s involvement in the competition as a bid to ‘whitewash and divert attention’ from the Israel’s bombardment on Gaza.

It argued that Israel ‘should not have the opportunity to polish its public image on the Eurovision stage and thus use this to cover up and continue its human rights violations.’

Elsewhere broadcasters in Spain, Ireland and Slovenia have called for a debate on Israel’s involvement. Last week, 70 former Eurovision contestants signed a letter calling on the organisers to ban Israel from the competition.

More than 53,000 people have been killed by Israel’s bombardment of the besieged territory, with all aid blocked from entering Gaza since March.

Israel should never have been permitted to compete in Eurovision in the first place. First and foremost, it’s not in Europe. Second, it makes zero sense for Israel to be permitted to participate when Russia is banned from participating. And third, there was zero chance that the Israeli competitor was going to be received well by the Eurovision audience.

Posted in: What happens if you go to prison in Japan? See in context

albaleoToday 02:56 pm JST

I think there's a big difference between the arrest and conviction rates. I've read that 60% of those arrested are released. Another 30% or so go to a summary trial where only a fine is issued and the defendant doesn't object. The high conviction rate applies to only about 8% of those arrested.

If it's a crime involving private individuals/corporations, often times the perp pays a cash settlement to the victim and it is settled before going to court. This is one way the Japanese keep their crime stats down

If you have a strong affiliation and accreditation to a major religious organization, these situations can often be expedited quickly in your favor. The Japanese authorities are very reluctant to upset major religions.

Kneecap are pure cosplay cringe. One of them (J.J. Doherty, known as "DJ Provo", the 36-year old in the balaclava, who is old enough to know better) is apparently the son of Richard Doherty, a Catholic Unionist from Londonderry who served in the RUC in the 1970s and is now an eminent historian of British military history. So its literally daddy issues for 'DJ Provo'!

I’m not saying the suits aren’t attractive. They are. Sanchez, at least, looks good in hers. It’s just that what it says about the priorities of the female astronauts doesn’t tend to lend it to anyone taking them seriously. I mean, if it weren’t for the fact that we know none of them had anything to do with the flight itself, and that they’ll have no more control over the flight controls than the dog the Russians sent up back in the day did, the odds would very heavily favor them crashing.
