Posted in: Japan scraps U.S. meeting after Washington demands more defense spending: report See in context

Good to see some push back and some spine from the Ishiba govt. Enough is enough.

Japan's Nikkei newspaper reported on Saturday that President Donald Trump's government was demanding that its Asian allies, including Japan, spend 5% of GDP on defense.

The US administration is kidding themselves. Nakatani should have laughed at Hegseth on the phone and hung up.

The US is testing the patience of ALL her allies.

Leo Messi is a force of nature. He showed today - 4 days shy of his 38th birthday - exactly why he is the GOAT of football. Astonishing shot. Hats off to him and his Inter Miami team mates!

Expect more jaw-dropping moments and memories from the great man in next year's World Cup.

Obviously it's not only Japanese elderly who are a real menace behind the wheel.

An 81 year old Italian has been detained today in Rome - for accidentally driving down the Spanish Steps!

Looking at the photo, it seems that he has just hit someone.

This is welcome technology. Problem is, many elderly drivers are still driving older cars without this tech.

Immigrants are welcome. Cultural invaders are not.

What is a "cultural invader"? Someone who uses their own language? There is no national language in the USA.

Is there even a USA culture?

Lotteries and betting on approved races -- horse, bicycle, powerboat and speedway motorcycle -- are the only legal forms of gambling in the country.

By far the biggest mode of gambling in Japan is pachinko and slot machines.

People aren't playing simply to collect thousands of ball bearings.

JJE -

The future is with BRICs and emerging nations. Russia saw this long ago.

In that case, why all the moaning and ranting that Russia was - correctly - kicked out of G8?

Just be happy with being among the developing nations.

Americans are unhealthy. Unsweetened tea (and snacks) will never take off in such a market. Best Ito En focus on some of the more health conscious regions, such as parts of Europe and Asia.

Japan should impose retaliatory tariffs of 10000% on iphones if a fair deal is not in offer.

No.

Tariffs are a dumb way to approach international trade. They were out of date 50 plus years ago.

Actually, it's the overall opinion of the British royal system. Not sure what the opinion is about the honours. I'd be surprised and a bit disappointed if most people begrudged David Beckham such an honour, though.

Why he believes desires such recognition, in a pubic display of entitled self worth. is utterly bewildering.

I doubt Beckham helped raise tens of millions of £ for underprivileged kids because he "desires the recognition". He's familiar to almost everyone worldwide anyway.

62% support overall. Two years old, but I doubt the tide has turned hugely. Younger generations have less support.

These honours are chosen by the government. Even if the royal family were abolished, these honours - such as Beckham's - would still be given out.

Congrats to David Beckham! The man has raised tens of millions of pounds over the decades for UNICEF - this is mostly what the knighthood is for. Fully deserved. By all accounts, Beckham is a genuinely good person who does good deeds.

British honours system rooted a thankfully long gone empire unfit for purpose.

I'm fairly sure the majority of people in the UK still support it.

Princess Kako, on behalf of the Japanese government, is projecting soft power in Brazil. It is effective and arguably better at winning hearts and minds than military or economic plays.

So, no, not worthless. The royal visit has much worth. 211 million sets of Brazilian eyes would have been glued to their TVs as Princess Kako addressed them in their Congress.

I feel guilty saying this, its probably sexism in 2025, but she is very pretty.

That's not sexism at all. Having a very attractive royal definitely appeals to foreign citizens in places like Brazil more than, say, some of the less attractive European Royals!

Japanese royals also have the wisdom and decorum to keep their mouths shut about sensitive topics and not embarrass the nation.

As far as I am aware, the government - through their Imperial Household Agency - do not permit the Japanese Royals to talk publicly about sensitive topics or issues. Probably a good move, as it keeps them strictly non political.

Good for Princess Kako - she looks stunning. The Brazilians would be thrilled to have royalty visit them, particularly the almost 3 million ethnic Japanese who reside there.

Hopefully Princess Kako is permitted to retain her title and privileges - pending government law changes of course - when she does get married.
